When you consider how little data texting consumes, and that it's transferred at a lower priority, any extra charge for texting is a rip-off. But that's not really news, so I'll get off my soap box now.

agreed.

seems the industry is going retroactive... I remember when unlimited texts was cheaper than any limited number.

No.
The way things were being stated here and various sites was leading toward a $29.99 fee for unlimited.

As far as tethering, it was my understanding that it was a capability within the service itself. Not an additional fee.

Of course, I should have known better. Regardless of tethering, the $50/month for unlimited really kills me. I didn't realize ATT charged $45/month for 2gb.... I'm basing my price analysis on what Verizon offers for their non iphones, so, yes, IMO, tacking another $20 on the data plan just because it's an iphone is enough to make me stray away. Regardless of what they think is clever marketing.
furthermore, I'm at $50 sans voice plan.... and even sans texting plan. I was thinking $150 would be about right for unlimited, 700minutes, and 500 texts. Now the price is closer to $190. If you're okay with that, great. I, however, think it is quite high. We pay $70 less for tmobile unlimited data, 1000 minutes, and 400 texts. I'm not talking chump change...

Edit: maybe I'm reading it wrong. But, it seems to me that you're inherently getting hotsptting with the fee. So, you can't opt out, making the base unlimited data price for the iphone $49.99. It was my understanding, when initial details were spread out, that hotspotting would be inherent, yes, but not at an additional cost.

The $49.99 includes hotspotting, but you can get a smaller data plan for less, without hotspotting. If I remember right it's $25 for 2GB on Vz (and AT&T just upped there $25 plan to 4GB).

On VZW it's $29.99 for unlimited data on the phone and $20 for 2gb for the hotspot.

On AT&T it's $25 for 2GB and $20 for tethering which shares the same 2gb.

Now, AT&T is said to be upping that to 4gb but VZW's package is still a better deal, based on unlimited smartphone data.

understood.

Still, my gripe comes with my initial understanding (as well as others, due to posts/articles here and elsewhere) that hotspotting was inherent to the phone/iOS and would therefore not cost 'extra' with any plan. It just flat out sucks that I'm realizing it does indeed cost extra. I was pretty set on Verizon @ the $29.99 unlimited iphone data plan (and assumed, like others, the hotspotting was a built in feature).

I guess this is all pretty moot anyway. I would imagine, at some point, we can expect a 'miWi' type app for JB verizon iphones.

Congrats. Question, please. Was there any type of family plan that you got on? My wife and I want iPhones in June (and currently pay $120 a month for AT&T) -- just wondering about a family plan on Verizon.

Hi!
We have been on a family plan for a few years now. In total, we have 4 phones on the family plan (no data plans yet until we get the iPhones). We have 1400 shared minutes a month, free calling to our top 10 numbers and unlimited texting/picture messaging. I have a 20% discount on my main line through my employer and the 4 phones with all of the features I mentioned cost $118 plus tax a month total. The 20% discount on the main line is about $20 off. We've been very happy with the service and coverage. Hope that helps!

So corporate discounts apply to the iPhones too? That helps a little bec. I get a similar discount from my workplace.

But I just signed up the for the sweet $70 (450 min, unlim. data, unlim. text, five friendsfamily, and free hotspot (Palm)) plan which I get a 19% discount on so the iPhone is going to be almost double what I currently pay even if I don't opt for the hotspot option.

I could be wrong (I was wrong about the $25 price tag after all) but isn't Verizon's unlimited deal temporary?

Damn you guys over there pay a lot of your plans!

I guess it's because we have... around 6+ networks all doing the iPhone here.

I pay £35 a month ($56.93) for this:

2,000 any network minutes
5,000 same network minutes
5,000 text
unlimited internet inc tethering - no cap at all on phone or tethering usage

and I only paid £69 ($112.24) for the phone.

We need the iPhone on Sprint and T-mobile ASAP

ordered for my wife, got email within 1 minute
(I'll get the iPhone5 in July-ish...)

summary:

we've never had a text plan, so currently don't text.
with a smartphone and email why spend $$ for text??
pls explain, what am I missing?

Other friends or family who text?

So much for competition. The prices are EXACTLY the same as AT&T.

Basically the ONLY reason to switch is if the AT&T service in your area isn't good. Because if you live in a place where both AT&T and Verizon work well, then AT&T is a slam dunk.

You get faster speeds, the ability to be on the internet and take calls (very important for tethering/hotspotting), and you get rollover minutes which are terrific.

Is there any actual advantage to Verizon for those who don't get dropped calls anyway?

AT&T is a slam dunk in probably only 25% of the nation.
