You dont have to switch your text plan.
You can keep the 200 texts for $5 if you have it now. You will be grandfathered just like the unlimited data plans.
Maybe, but once your contract is up and you renew, you will have to pay the higher rates.

Well if Verizon does offer an unlimited plan than its pretty safe to bet that AT&T will reinstate theirs. And if the mobile hotspot is free then you can bet AT&T will do the same.

There is NO five gig cap on the smartphone data plan. There just isn't. People who say there is one are simply and completely wrong.

Utterly incorrect. There is no cap, soft or hard. Just don't be a complete idiot about things (which is true with anything in life). I have exceeded five gigs several times. Never a problem. Read the terms of service - there is no cap.

Every damned thread somebody brings that up, completely bereft of any actual knowledge, but dammit THEY READ SOMETHING ON THE INTERNET SOMEWHERE.

So true, ever since the netflix app was released I have used about 10GB a month with no problems.

So again, is it worth getting the unlimited data plan now to get grandfathered into the unlimited plan with the iphone?

I will bet you that verizon offers free tethering with the iPhone :D they do with android, so why not? Android users use more data on average anyways.

its never been free on android. It is free on Palm, because no one buys those devices

so like everyone one else, I will take your bet

Rumor has is that they will only offer the unlimited data package for a limited time. Rumors are funny because we never know which one is actually true.

I'd put my money on this. That's what I would do if I were them and wanting to get rid of unlimited.

This would give incentive to AT&T customers to change over (even if they aren't unhappy with AT&T) and once they grab any of those, change the plans. They won't have to give out too many new unlimited plans and they make a grab for some easy to get customers (people that just need some incentive to change, not unhappy with AT&T but maybe wanting a better data plan offer) that they wouldn't get otherwise.

That is what they said, it also says that under the facts on the iphone page on their site too. So I am fairly certain we are in for a treat, and not a good one.

That's kinda mean of them. I suppose if they don't have any real motivation to be nice though they aren't going to be (they aren't there to be nice, just to take your money ;) ). And I'm guessing they feel they don't have to cause they feel their customers won't switch over that.

(If that is actually true, that's another +1 for AT&T. I've yet to have them not grandfather a plan of mine in. The only time I had to change was when we changed the plan into my roommate's name cause he got a discount. Which basically was me ending my plan and him starting a new one).

I've never not had Verizon grandfather a plan as well. It's one thing to "reserve the right" in writing. It's another thing to actually exercise that right. But grandfathering is different than what you are talking about.

But on EVERY carrier I've had, the way they get around that is by saying "if you want feature X..." AT&T did this with tethering. AT&T did this with the iPhone 3G.

NO carrier is innocent when it comes to this. It's common practice in the industry.

But I mean even when I changed phones they let me keep my old voice plan.

What it sounds like that person was suggesting was that if you get the new phone, you have to get all new/different plans even if you already have a data plan/voice plan (I mean it's not like they are even 4G plans, they are still 3G data plans).

Yes, and AT&T did the same when you switched from the first iPhone to the iPhone 3G. It is a possibility, but I don't think a probability. I never trust what those CSRs say. If they don't know an answer the guess and make crap up.

Ah, I didn't know that (my first smartphone was the 3G but they let us keep our voice plan from our dumb phone, just made us add a data plan to it).

That is very true.
A big percentage of customer service reps if they dont know something they just guess and make things up as they go. If you ask if they're sure they insist and become defensive.
Dont listen to what they say, wait till an official announcement is made.

Umm, nope. I can't even imagine AT&T reinstating their unlimited plan. Let me try again. Nope, sorry. They know Verizon is likely to go ahead and end their unlimited 3G plans as well somewhere in the near future. However, if Verizon were to allow free tethering, which could be considered a slight possibility if they have metered plans, AT&T would likely do the same

I agree. I can't recall a CSR telling me "I don't know" or "I'm not sure."

So no one knows. I'll just wait until its released like everyone else.
