I found the numbers in the Wiki entry for each provider. But I didn't do a very good job of copying them. Upon rereading the Wiki, AT&T actually has MORE subscribers than Verizon.

Imagine that!

Verizon - 102.2 million total connections, includes 94.1 million total customers.

AT&T - AT&T said that it added 2.8 million wireless subscribers during the last quarter for a new total of 95.5 million - the first time wireless subscriptions have surpassed wireline, AT&T said. Overall, AT&T added 8.9 million subscribers in 2010.

no ****, of course they wont meet the expectations right now,

1. people WILL NOT cancel their att contract to switch to Verizon yet, like my wife
2. People are waiting to see what happens in June

I would love to see those numbers again "IF" Verizon would have went on stage and said "Here is the iphone 4 now available on Verizon, you will not see an updated one for verizon till at least 2012 and we will buy out your ATT contract" I bet if that happened the numbers would have blown past their expectations :)

The expectations already had all of this built into the numbers (contract expiration dates, iPhone 5, etc). None of this was unknown when expectations were set.

Maybe analysts were overly optimistic, but bottom line is the launch missed...

^This.
I'm pretty sure both verizon and apple took this into consideration when they prepared for the launch, as other people here like to remind, both companies have very smart people running them.

I think what you had was a very vocal minority (mostly in San Fran and NYC) who were very fed up with AT&T service and created lots of hype, while the majority are either getting good service or aren't fed up enough to the point of breaking contract and switching right away.

Regardless, the competition has been good for us, already AT&T has changed their data plans for the better, added mobile to any mobile options, and has given out free rollover minutes. Hopefully come iPhone 5 the competition becomes even fiercer and we get better deals from both.

Yes, because doubling sales is a failure. That's pretty much what I would expect with an 8-month old phone that will be getting a refresh in a few months.

Keep in mind this is the same market that considers a company that keeps breaking their previous profit/revenue records every quarter as a failure. ;)

Thanks for Sharing. I don't know what hype was greater, that of Verizon ahead of the launch, or that of the posters on this website over the years asking "When can I get a Verizon iPhone!!".

Competition is good either way. Not an AT&T fanboy, just extremely satisfied with their service in my area. We all know there are pockets of problem areas, both carriers.
