Dear Verizon Sufferers,

An iPhone will NOT be coming out on Verizon this year.

If you are waiting on that, then go ahead and Get a Magniplitudespendliferous Droid phone and sign up for 2 more years. By the time that contract is up, there is a good chance you can get the sixth revision iPhone. Congratulations.

I'm waiting for the Keynote on the 7th. I, as well as thousands of other people, are waiting to see if Steve Jobs announces the iPhone will be opened up to other carriers. If he doesn't, that makes my upgrade decision that much easier; No CDMA iPhone announcement = many of us upgrading to the better spec'd phone, the Evo 4G.

Being the huge Apple fanboi I am, I would LOVE to get an iPhone. However, AT&T will never see a single cent of my business. Screw them and their outrageous prices. I'll stick with the better carrier (Sprint) with the better network, the MUCH cheaper plans and the best spec'd phone on the market (Evo 4G).

This is good advice. I decided that I could either wait for years to get a Verizon iPhone or enjoy everything Android has to offer right now. I have been very satisfied with my Motorola Droid.

In fact the Motorola Droid 2 (A955) is now showing up in Verizon's system. The new Droid should be here soon.

Also if you prefer HTC the Droid Incredible is a good choice. Last the Motorola Shadow with a 4.3" Touchscreen will be coming.

There are a lot of options if you want or need to stay with Verizon.

I just did exactly that; I'm now waiting for the Incredible to arrive. I would have bought an iPhone but now I'm happily joining the Android brigade. Sorry Steve, see you in two years. Maybe.

Yeah Sprint is awesome unless you are a stockholder. Let's see how long they can continue as a viable business with these results:

Profitability
Profit Margin (ttm): -8.42%
Operating Margin (ttm): -3.29%

Management Effectiveness
Return on Assets (ttm): -1.18%
Return on Equity (ttm): -14.92%

As Sprint Tops S&P 500, Where's the Buy?

Executive Producer, Fast Money

Sprint Nextel [S 5.13 -0.06 (-1.16%) ] shares jumped more than 20 percent since April, the most of any other stock in the S&P 500 [.SPX 1089.41 -13.65 (-1.24%) ] in May, a month where the index dropped about 8 percent for its worst decline in a year.

Subscriber growth, the launch of the first 4G phone and a new Prepaid service through Wal-Mart [WMT 50.56 -0.14 (-0.28%) ] is driving investor enthusiasm for this one time ugly cellular stepsister, which was in danger of bankruptcy after its botched merger with Nextel in 2005.

“Customer adds are increasing, Goldman Sachs [GS 144.26 -0.69 (-0.48%) ] just went to a ‘buy’ this week and the first 4G phone is launching next week,” said Brian Kelly, founder of Kanundrum Capital and a ‘Fast Money’ contributor. “I am a buyer at $4.50.”

Sprint shares have gained momentum against the rest of the market after the Goldman Sachs upgrade and securing a new $2.1 billion credit facility in the last two weeks. Apple [AAPL 256.88 3.53 (+1.39%) ], which released its iPad in 8 more countries today, is little changed on the month. Just 14 of the 80 technology companies in the S&P 500 posted gains this month.

“The EVO appears to be a real alternative to the iPhone,” wrote David Dixon, FBR Capital Markets analyst, in a note to clients this week. Pre-registrations for the June 4th launch of the 4G Phone “are the highest for any device in the company’s history.” Dixon has a $6 target price on the shares.

“HTC EVO 4G is a fantastic 3G device, but when you use it in our growing 4G coverage area, it becomes a multimedia powerhouse,” said Dan Hesse, the Sprint CEO and star of the company’s commercials, in a May 12th press release. “The EVO 4G experience is much like going from TV to HDTV.”

Deutsche Bank analyst Brett Feldman timed the trade perfectly this month, recommending buying the shares on May 5, two days before the stock hit its low for May of $3.83.

“Sprint’s valuation continues to imply the business is in terminal decline and not, as we believe, turning the corner,” wrote Feldman at the time. The analyst noted that churn, a measure of customer departures, was the lowest for Sprint in the first quarter since 2006. He has a $6 target on the stock as well.

On May 13, Sprint Nextel announced it was partnering with Wal-Mart to offer a Prepaid service. With more than 95 percent of the U.S. population already with cellular service, this is the only growth area left in terms of subscriptions as more and more frustrated users tear up their long-term contracts for the pay-as-you-go plans that are the norm in Europe.

But before it’s declared the ‘Summer of Sprint’, investors may want wait for a pullback in the surging shares before buying, analysts and traders said.

“As a result of the recent run in Sprint Shares, new investors should choose to be selective with their entry point,” wrote FBR’s Dixon. “However, we continue to believe in the long-term turnaround story.”

then why develop?

They ARE developing the phone. the question then remains, WHY? If there are NO hopes for a contract aside from AT&T.....why even put the capital into such an rehaul of a device....the R&D and the engineering costs alone would be insane to venture out into that territory with no hope of a return.

Clearly, there is a light at the end of the tunnel of AT&T's exclusivity agreement. They would not even TRY to develop this phone for another network if there wasn't. Sprint or Verizon, can't wait to see who gets it.

My guess is Sprint b4 Verizon tho, I can't see Verizon budging on the apps store issue.

I just got a Droid Incredible and it IS incredible and fun and easy to use

As much as I USED TO WANT an iPhone, I just will NOT keep waiting and I will NEVER go to AT$T

Signing another 2 year with Verizon means nothing because once I get a year in, I can upgrade to ANY phone I want with them at their discount pricing anyway. So maybe next year I might get an iPhone with them....but I tell ya...this Droid Incredible is really NICE

I'm in the same boat as you. Im sick of waiting and my contract is just about up with verizon. I'm going to renew for another two years...... sorry steve.

This sounds likely. Apple will release their new model, then everyone will get it, locking themselves to ATT for two years with a new huge termination fee, THEN the Verizon phone will come out.

I don't know why people think adding a CDMA radio is that hard or expensive. It's not and it doesn't take millions of dollars.

As part of my job, I've asked smaller handheld device companies to create one-off CDMA versions for me before, and gotten them back within weeks. I guarantee you they spent more like ten thousand dollars, not a hundred thousand or a million just to make me happy :)

See above. I agree that Apple must have a CDMA version or two in their labs. Heck, Qualcomm just announced dual core 1.5MHz Snapdragon chipsets with HSPA+EVDO. But it doesn't mean an Apple CDMA phone is imminent, even though a Verizon version is bound to happen someday.

My guess is Sprint b4 Verizon tho, I can't see Verizon budging on the apps store issue.

What app store issue? Verizon has never stopped any smartphone user from going to any app store they wanted. Unless you meant, Verizon would want Apple to share store profits. (There are rumors that ATT gets a share already.)

Shouldn't that read 'Dear Verizon people that don't want to give up good cell coverage and suffer with poor ATT coverage in your area'?

They don't want to suffer, so they keep waiting. Every area is different. My area is way better with Verizon. If ATT is good in your area, go for it ... and congrats.

After seeing the guts of the iPhone 4, it became obvious to me that all the manufacture has to do is switch out the outer steel frame with the antenna and replace it with a CDMA version. Done and done.

Apple purposely made it super easy to have two different versions of this phone without having to touch the insides of the phone.

I really hope you are joking. And if you are, why did you dig up such a nasty subject that causes so much bad attitude between the Verizon and AT&T haters?!?!

Maybe Verizon Phone will not be good when first one came out... I rather buy Verizon IPhone Version 2 which it will be much better than first one!! :) IPhone 4 is just way too good for one or two years..

You know, I didn't even consider ever going back to Verizon. Then, I just looked at ConsumerReports.org ratings of the Cell Phone companies (taken from over 50,000 users. Of Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, & AT&T..... Verizon had the highest overall rating for Service, Voice, Data, Customer Service, etc. AT&T had the lowest. And they even break down things by City...... The only drawback, you have to subscribe to get the Report. I wanted to copy their overall chart, but they don't allow that.

I'm not joking around. I want a Verizon iPhone as bad as everyone. But looking to this fact in addition to the early upgrade eligibility that AT&T is giving everyone, I can foresee a fall-January release.

I'm holding onto my 3G through the fall to see what happens.

The reason I said that I hope you're joking is because there is a lot more to changing a phone from UMTS to CDMA than changing the antenna. It's not big enough that it should be a problem, tons of other carriers have UMTS and CDMA versions of their phones, but the thought of just changing the antenna is laughable.

Well, at some point hopefully.

Verizon Wireless has about a year to get an iPhone. That is the amount of time that it will take AT&T to completely re-brand and replace Alltel as a wireless operator in North Dakota. The race is on...which ever gets in first will win.

Sorry, Apple will NOT do a CDMA-standard iPhone.

Besides the issue of CDMA not supporting simultaneous voice and data, there are worries that the way the iPhone connects to a cellphone network could overwhelm the Verizon network. Apple may wait until Verizon's new LTE network is built out in 2011 before offering the iPhone for Verizon.

CDMA has support for it. Verizon is rumored to be rolling it out.

You are not Steve Jobs. You don't know for sure.

CDMA DOES support simultaneous voice and data. PDF warning. Look up SVDO

It's up to the carriers (verizon and sprint) to add support on their networks.

LTE seems likely because it coincides well with the supposed exclusivity termination date. However, we still don't know that date for sure.

Actually, they don't need to. SVDO is implemented on the handset side alone.

Apple could make a CDMA iPhone with simultaneous voice+data, and use it as a unique selling feature until everyone else did the same.

Actually, they don't need to. SVDO is implemented on the handset side alone.

My understanding was that the network needed some sort of minor software upgrade to handle the traffic. That is not the case? Do you know of a source for this (I'm not questioning your credibility, I've just not seen a definitive answer on it).

It surprises me someone hasn't implemented it already then.
