Verizon seems to be at the point where they are so large they no longer care about the customers. I hope tmo and sprint can expand their networks because once my contract is up in June I am done with verizon. Tired of all the BS moves they have been making ever since they got the iphone. At least att allows those with unlimited to keep it when upgrading...

----------

Sadly I get poor reception with AT&T at my home and work, so Verizon is my best bet.

Although 4G LTE may make that a moot point.

This makes me want to go away from Verizon when I get my next iPhone.

Nice marketing job, Verizon! :p

This is a curious way to respond to T-Mobile's no subsidizing plans. Stick it to your customers more.

Probably they hope this prevents people from jumping ship 4 months earlier. Short term profits over long term customers... not a good combination.

Funny thing is this makes it more likely for users to jump ship. Before upgrading at 20 months would lock them into another 2 year contract, now they will be able to leave with no etf, shopping around for the best deal. Foolish move verizon.

Everyone should just get into the habit of paying full price. Never agree to another contract then see how these carriers act.

they won't care, because they are still making the same amount and not having to subsidize the phone to you. That actually benefits the carrier.

Remember Ma Bell?

Well VZ is nothing more than their offspring. Just as greedy, just as uncaring. This is yet another reason why we the people must always make sure that we do what it takes to get the corporate American goon squads to give us fair choices!

As for me, between my own experiences with VZ "high-speed" internet service (a.k.a. 0.768 mps, downgraded from 2.8 mps when I started...of course without a corresponding drop in price) and their current cellphone policies and antics, there's an excellent chance that I'm going to welcoming a "dumb-phone" back into my life. Heck, I might even just ditch on the idea of a cellphone and go back to a good old-fashioned landline...with another provider of course.

Same with how it was without cars or electricity. Today's society practically demands one having a cell, as it does cars and electricity

I believe you are, essentially, correct.

However, it should be said that as necessary as they are, and as dependent as we have become upon them, there are folks who live their lives quite comfortably (if not as conveniently) without cell phones, or computers, or tablets, etc. And...cars!! (Depends on where you live how essential a car is).

I don't think that quite compares to living without electricity...I think the analogy breaks down there.

Verizon is a monopoly in land lines and FiOS. So they act like a monopoly in cell service too. You can see it with the way they take their customers for granted.

How are they a monopoly in landlines and FiOS?

I have yet to see a single person have a Verizon landline. The HPC doesn't count.

AT&T has a monopoly though almost.

Also I have yet to meet anyone with FiOS

While this seems like a trivial matter, the bigger question is this:

Why in the "land of the free" are the telecoms allowed to charge the outrages prices they do, in ways which are actually illegal in the rest of the world?

For example, in India they aren't even allowed to charge a penny per text, because that is a markup in the 1000%+ range. In this country, they still get away with charging many people plans that cost $20 per month for "unlimited texting". That is outrageous.

In addition, these companies are many times larger than the landline phone companies were during the big breakups. Because they got congress to pass a law saying wireless carriers didn't have to adhere to the same rules of the landline companies, we've allowed these companies to not only consolidate with others making multinational juggernauts the size we've never seen before (literally the holders of the keys for communication and information in large swaths of the world).

T-Mobile is trying to change the game, but not towards consumers. It's interesting that immediately after many of the big companies tried to merge and were blocked, that the dissenting members of the FCC suddenly stepped down. Something in rotten in the state of Denmark.

Quite sad how US has gone, big business aided by politicians with vested interest have been allowed to pretty much destroy your constitution and kill off any actual freedom you had.

I'll wait to see the official notification, but methinks this sounds like a material alteration to the service agreement. I hope VZW is ready to let me out of my contract!

How do you figure? Your 24-month contract is a 24-month contract. My contract is absent of the statement that I may be or would be eligible for an early upgrade at 20 months. As such, the 24-month contract remains. If VZW is forcing you to live out your contract then how do you think this is a material alteration? Be prepared to lose your battle when you try to get out of your 24-month contract because they are making you live out the full term.

Douche move on VZW's part given history of early upgrades, but not surprising.

I guess. They have been great to iPhone users ...

Left Verizon after 6 horrible years of customer service and issues, went to AT&T in 2008 for the iPhone 3G and I can say I have not had any issues and their Customer Service has been Superb...

I kinda hope they join T-Mobile and offer both what they do today with a Sub iPhone and what T-Mob is doing, I used to get a new phone every year, but it is starting to look as I might wait and upgrade every 2 or longer, just as long as I am not pay the same between the Sub and NON sub iPhone price.

Verizon, what good are you doing for the customer nowadays anyway?

Unlimited 4G LTE, 0 throttling, with hotspot? Best service around for people who didn't subsidize new phones and are in an LTE zone (more than other providers).

But they stopped that, you can't even upgrade and they won't give you a discount even after you upgrade.

It's retarded

You can upgrade, you just can't use the discount. I had no issues moving to the iPhone 5 with LTE. Kept unlimited everything (voice/text/data/hotspot). I use enough data to make up the unsubsidized cost after 2 months.

You're less than one percent of customers.

Most don't use over 2 gigs

I can count on one hand the number of people that use over 2gb and almost all of them used 30 or more

Will AT&T follow Verizons Lead?

Oddly enough, I logged into my AT&T account just to see when I am eligible for an upgrade and the date has been removed.

"This line may be eligible for an upgrade at our best pricing on..." and that's all folks! LOL

And for the users under 2GB, it makes sense to give up unlimited and buy a subsidized phone. Not sure where there is an issue with Verizon's policy. If you use obscene amounts of data, it is cost effective to buy unsub'd phones, otherwise buy sub'd phones.

your verizon iphone will not work on tmobile's network
Verizon iPhone 5's come unlocked. I have been able to stick a T Mobile and AT&T sim card inside my 5 and have it work perfectly with the exception of 4G LTE.

LTE is only good if all you do is watch videos on your phone all day. other than that i see almost no difference between my 4s and 5

way too broad a statement. In Chicago, 3G is saturated and also has a lot of bad spots especially on the train. Ever since switching to LTE on VZW I can finally actually use the web on my commute.

When does this take effect? I know they said all contracts ending after January 2014. But mine is up in March 2014, and is still displaying the upgrade date for November 2013.

I believe it's tomorrow? Mine still shows an October 2013 upgrade with my contract set to expire in Feb 2014.
