Typical Verizon.
Caring more about their profits than trying to keep a customer happy.
The thing is if they wait the full 24 to get a subsidy then they are free to go to any other carrier if they choose to.
Locking them in a few months before the choice is even available is a better business approach IMO.
But they will soon see Tmobile starting to grow with their proconsumer plans and deals instead.

If I transfer over to TMobile from Verizon with my iPhone 5 would they be able to use that phone on their network? Or would I have to buy the TMobile version iPhone?

yep. And i'm only *powerless to the extent that T-mo doesn't offer LTE in NYC at the moment, so until a viable solution comes up i'm stuck at at&t. but knowing that i can walk out any second and there's not a damn thing they can do is a good feeling.

i'm also paying closer attention to some of these other smaller carriers. if i can find of them that has decent-to-good LTE service in NYC and LA, (my main two bases here in the states) then that might be my out.

LTE is only good if all you do is watch videos on your phone all day. other than that i see almost no difference between my 4s and 5

I believe the Verizon version is EVDO only, T-Mobile is GSM (HSPA) I thought? I could be wrong but I think you would need a new phone. However T-Mobile is offering the trade-in deal.

LOL I had to log in to post on this...

You guys are crying/whining about 4 months?! Jeez...

I've been eligible for an upgrade since January. I'm very content with my iPhone 4 and unlimited data/tethering though.

No one forces you to play their game and sign a contract. Apple will be more than happy to sell you an unsubsidized/unlocked iPhone that you can take to the carrier of your choice contract free. Vote with your wallet. I imagine a lot of people will be going to T-Mobile in the near future. I'm strongly considering it.

Now, if I had a contract expiring in February or March of next year, I'd go raise hell, because Verizon just changed the terms of my contract without my approval.

better yet, just go to Tmobile and buy an unlocked iPhone cheaper than Apple charges, no contract.

As for Verizon, never been with them- never will.

I broke my contract after a year because of this very same thing in January and sold my bad ESN phone on eBay. All they ever told me was that they constantly make improvements to their network and just be patient.

I am now on T-Mobile with my 4S and get speeds from 6-10Mbps and on a Nexus 4 from 17-21Mbps. I never knew speeds were that possible. Never got them on AT&T either.

Did you live in an LTE area? Verizon LTE is usually pretty amazing.

I got my 4S on launch day, but yet verizon has my contract end date as March 2014. That is a 29 month contract. They've never given me a clear explanation as to why it reads that. Nobody "took" my upgrade. So now rather than being eligible in November, I have to wait until March.

first they force you to re-subsidize full-price phones to keep your unlimited data plans...

Then this... Enjoy! you deserve it!

I... deserve it? Because I signed on several months ago after making an informed decision based on pricing, coverage, speed, and a host of other factors, without any idea of what the future might hold with Verizon or any other carrier?

...okay then.

So if I have 7/2014 renewal date currently I will see it change to 11/2014? How can they do this in middle of contract.

They can't. But you can bet they word it what you are in a 24 month contract so they were already breaking the terms letting you upgrade early. Or some similar BS to cover their butts

----------

The US consumer has gotten so conditioned to the idea of subsidized pricing of equipment that any attempt to go in a different direction will result in massive sticker shock.

We expect our cell phones to be between $0 - $200 here in the US. The minute someone sees $600 - $800 for a phone, they'll run directly to AT&T or Verizon and sign a contract to avoid that hit out of pocket, even if the plans are cheaper.

Yeah, Ron Johnson.

In California AT&T signal is beyond horrible, same with sprint. So I am stuck with verizon.

... How can you spot an AT&T customer? Look for the person standing by the window on one foot and finger On His nose.

Honestly you're probably right. It's already a 24 month contract, so technically now that I think about it there isn't anything anybody can do about this. Tmobile will definitely come out ahead now. This is no way to compete with other carriers.

I haven't actually read my Contract (and shame on me!). Does it actually say, in so many words in the Contract that one can terminate the Contract four months early without an ETF??

Or has that been an unwritten policy, not a formal part of the Contract??

No, no, not what I meant, sorry for the confusion.

The customer termination clause comes in when a company changes their contract on you in the middle of the contract. You get a certain amount of days (15 or 30 days?) to cancel your contract because you don't agree with the new terms.

An example I can think of is when phone companies started charging 25 cents per text vs 15 cents many, many years ago. They allowed customers to end their contract if they wanted to.

However, I'm no legal expert, so when this can be used... I am not sure.

Wtf?

Why does every other industry in the world get cheaper over time but wireless phones/data seem to get more expensive and more limited every year? WTF?

Except that you are handing AT&T free $25 monthly subsidy for a phone that you already paid for, it's baked in your rates.

This. I would be all for going off contract and paying full price but you really are giving the carrier more money. They don't lower your monthly cost, so you are paying for a subsidy you never got. It was like that with first iPhone. You paid full price and still paid att monthly fees as if you got a subsidy.

It's a little bit strange to read this on Apple-related forum.

Wrong. Theres a huge difference especially in downloading apps, browsing the web, checking email, listening to spotify, using google navigation, etc. I could never go back to slow 3g again.

I don't get why more people don't understand this. Some people hate the idea of signing a contract for any length of time. NEWSFLASH - the phone subsidy is worth more than contract break fees!

Correct me if I'm wrong (and I'm sure you all will), but didn't you Verizon whiners originally sign up for a 24 month renewal to begin with? The 20 month "deal" was always meant to be temporary so you are basically just getting what you agreed to in the first place.

I have 3 phones with them as well (and 1 with AT&T). All 3 have been upgraded after 20 months which was a pleasant surprise we didn't expect.
