better yet, just go to Tmobile and buy an unlocked iPhone cheaper than Apple charges, no contract.

As for Verizon, never been with them- never will.
Yeah, absolutely. Just saying, if you don't want to pay $600 for a new unlocked phone, there are other options out there that are good for the price of a subsidized iPhone.

Did you live in an LTE area? Verizon LTE is usually pretty amazing.

Woah... where do you live? VZW LTE in northern VA is nowhere near that awesome:

Wow that's arrogant. The reason for allowing upgrades before 24 months is so people don't have a chance to shop around when the contract is up (like resigning a free agent-to-be the year before his contract is up). Verizon is basically saying people won't jump ship if given a chance to look around. Like I said, arrogant.

More a miscalculation. at&t will wait a while on this one. :)

Everyone should just get into the habit of paying full price. Never agree to another contract then see how these carriers act.

They will just start charging $100-300 to activate your non-contract phone, $30 if you sign up for 2 years.

And this is why I'm happy with my non-contract Straight Talk! My service is just fine, no drop calls, etc. I'll gladly buy Nexus devices every year when I want a phone upgrade.

This is why I buy phones outright. It's not that big of a issues for me. I then can do what I want.

These cell phone companies are put to make money, which is good. We need to fight back however.

Everyone wants to point their fingers at the carriers, and yes, sure they are out to destroy consumer choice, but nobody's looking at the big elephant in the room. Apple.

Apple has well over $100 Billion (I still don't think people get the concept of Billion) sitting in the bank. They are the sole reason carriers can grab us by the balls with these ridiculous bloodsucking contracts. Yes, Apple has a duty to make as much money as possible for their shareholders (which they actually don't, they hoard their money), but so do the carriers. So, don't just point your finger at the carriers.

Apple is in a very special position to completely change the landscape of the cellphone industry. They can do this by making their unsubsidized phones more affordable. If they do that, it's the customer then who now has the upper hand. We can buy a phone, totally unlocked and jump around to the carrier with the best price and service. Unlike now, where the carriers are in collusion, they will have to compete for customers.

And Apple may be working on this. We'll have to see. But if it comes picking between the slightly thicker, plastic, single core iPhone with no contract vs what we have now with the contract, I'll pick the plastic one.

You can already do this...

Get a Nexus 4! Great phone, affordable and unlocked and I have never had any speed concerns with HSPA+ (and I do also have a phone on Verizon LTE). I am just lucky as cellular service in the Balt/Wash metro area is fantastic (even on T-Mobile).

Except that you are handing AT&T free $25 monthly subsidy for a phone that you already paid for, it's baked in your rates.

This is very true. It's either subsidized customers are not paying back their subsidy every month or customers who buy an iPhone for full price are still paying a monthly subsidy. There's no middle ground because their monthly rates are the same.

Reality Check:

No one should be complaining or have any concern based on the fact that everyone here keeps saying there isn't much difference between the 4, 4S, and 5... a full two years worth of iPhone models. :D

Honestly though, it's 4 additional months. If my choice is higher rates for the entire contract period or having to keep my phone for 4 more months I'll keep the phone.

For those who think Verizon is pushing customers away, just wait... ATT and Sprint will follow. It's just a matter of time now. If I didn't have a grandfathered data plan I'd likely leave ATT for VZW just b/c they'll unlock the GSM side while under contract.

Verizon is counting on the 60% plus members it currently already has on family plans. Verizon knows this. Family plans are only real reason to have expensive Verizon or AT&T.

Lets see. Most peeps also have discounts plus family plans.

So 4-5 lines with Verizon. The bill is around $200-250 a month. About $50-55 dollars per line.

People aren't going to drop Verizon if they have 4-5 lines and get 20-25% discounts. It's very hard to cancel 4-5 lines cause most lines are staggered in their contracts.

Just indirect way of Verizon to raise costs by making people wait 4 more months to use subsidy upgrade.

I guarantee you people with family plans 4-5 lines (which are the vast majority if Verizon and even AT&T customer base). People won't leave.

Single lines will leave cause they are already paying $90-100 a month. But 4-5 lines won't be tempted to leave over this.

----------

Ok complainers. Who are on single lines vs family plans? I want to know.

I am on family plan with both AT&T and Verizon with 22-24% discounts.

Right before the first iPhone came out my wife and I had just bought a house. We were still in city limits but for some reason there was a tiny area that had little reception for Verizon.....made no sense b/c reception was everywhere around it.

I called Verizon to talk about it and I was told...and I quote "Go outside and walk around if you need better reception." My wife and I who had just spent $200k on our first home purchase were told this by Verizon. And I did go outside, I went outside when the iPhone was released, got in my car, and went and bought two. I paid an ETA for Verizon and told them I'd never use them again.

So glad I made that decision. AT&T is by no means perfect and at times they seem just inept to me, but Verizon seemed just rude and bad when I had them.

Good point. I didn't know how cheap it was. It's still subsided though, by Google. Do cell phones really cost $800+ to make? No way. I know that cellphone makers are not in it for charity, but they should offer something sub-$500.

Tons of comments here saying "F U Verizon... do you want us to move to T-Mobile?"

My question is... why aren't you already on T-Mobile?

T-Mobile has always been cheaper than Verizon... but their coverage isn't that great.

Cheaper isn't always better.

Verizon may be bastards... but they have great coverage and a huge selection of phones.

This is what they're thinking:

1. Multiple phones on a one shared data plan.

2. Staggered contract expiration dates.

3. Month 20 comes around you think about leaving but have 1-2 other lines tethered to the plan.

4. You wait to month 24 like a chump.

If I transfer over to TMobile from Verizon with my iPhone 5 would they be able to use that phone on their network? Or would I have to buy the TMobile version iPhone?

U can use tmobile with verizon iPhone 5. It is sold GSM unlocked.

But u will be limited to 1900 MHz hspa plus tmobile 3G/fake 4g speeds. No LTE possible with verizon iPhone 5.

Exactly. Very well said! Verizon knows this.

VZW Marketing Chief: TMO is doing away with contracts, what should we do?

VZW CEO: Let's double down on contracts, start with 24 months.

You make a good point here. I have 3 lines staggered on AT&T. Mine is up in May, the others Jan of 14'.

I am taking all 3 to T-mobile this year, not sure how much the etf will be on 4-5 months- if it's too much I may just wait until Jan.

Either way, I'm going back from where I came with mobile- Voicestream/T-mobile.

I would have told him to go outside and **** himself.

I would liked to have told him that.....but my wife and I already had the conversation about switching. All we needed was that nudge of rudeness to get us out the door and equipped with two $600 iPhones (yes that's what they cost with a contract when we first got them.....$600/each lol ) So he kind of helped us out I guess. We got new shiny toys and we no longer had to deal with Verizon.

:D

I would rather be in a carrier that is changing the game (which I am right now, but no iPhone for me ) than a carrier that puts the middle finger into everyone of its customers.

I agree with Verizon on this one. The contract period is 2 years, not 20 months. The subsidized phone business model is silly to begin with. There is no free lunch.
