so to be clear - there is no way I can replace our current iphone 4 and 4s with unlimited data with the new iphone this fall and still have unlimited data, even if I purchase the new phones full price?

No, no. If you buy the iPhone 5 at full price, they will allow you to keep unlimited data. However, if you buy a subsidized phone [ie a iPhone 5 with a 2 year contact for $399] then you will not be able to keep unlimited data.

QFT.

Which is how it has been ever since the limited data plans were first offered. I'm not sure how this is new or confusing for any existing VZW customers.

More importantly, if anybody feels like they'd be crippled by a limited data plan, they really need to check their current data usage. Most would be amazed how little data they actually use. And, if they are dangerously close to even the 2 gb limit, they should reevaluate how they are using their data. Turning on WiFi at home and at work will drastically decrease data usage. I went from an average of 2gb-4.5gb/month to about 200mb/month just by making sure I auto connect to my home and work WiFi networks.

I agree with you.

However, I think it shouldn't be forced. If your a heavy user of Data, then there should be an option to keep it; if not then yes there should be another option to lower to Limited Data packages. Something tells me that most people would jump off Unlimited Data, if they noticed how much they could save.

No.

I've been upgrading phones on vzw without losing unlimited data for a while now.

You don't realize how much faster LTE is than CDMA on vzw. people that are using 4mb/month on CDMA will be in for a rude awakening when they start seeing at least 2,3 or 4 gbs if not more per month on the LTE iPhone. I average roughly 20gb per month. I listen to sirius radio in the car, watch mlb.tv and NFL gameday when at a friend's house that doesn't have wifi, crackle so on and so forth. I never did all that on vzw's nearly useless cdma iphone but on my LTE android it's easy.

no. As of right now if you buy a new phone at full retail you can maintain your current data plan. That may change in the future though.

Thanks guys - this was my assumption up until recently when I read a number of different sources that seemed to be saying that any move from 3g to 4g would constitute a "change of plan" and would thus force a move off of unlimited data...

Two things, the way I read the statement is if you change from 3G to 4G you lose unlimited, but why about those with unlimited LTE right now?

Next I want to address those who say this is reason to leave vzw, what's the point unless you go Sprint which in my area, NYC suburbs the signal is horrid plus their lte coverage is nothing compared to vzw, you still lose unlimited, AT&T did away with unlimited. So there is no difference in switching or being forced to drop unlimited.

No. You only lose unlimited if you buy a new phone at the subsidized price
