Grandfather Schmanfather. I bet ATT will drop Unlimited completely by the time iPhone 5 rolls out.

Way to make it easy for me to stay with AT&T, Verizon. They will probably switch ahead of an iPhone launch because they know their network can't handle it. Doubt any U.S. network could.

So why hasn't AT&T fixed the upload bug yet? Has anyone heard any word on that? It's still driving me crazy!

Way to go MacRumors! Reporting on the front page about Apple product rumors! Oh wait, Apple wasn't even mentioned once in the article.

pretty sure it mentioned the iPhone...which, in case you didn't realize, is an Apple product. :)

Caps will either go away for increase dramatically when 4G is the standard. These tiers that "kill innovation" won't be so harsh in a couple of years.

We all know what happened to the price of bandwidth for webhosting and such...

I started leasing a web server that included 300 gigs of bandwidth in 2003 and now, without paying any more than i ever have, it has 1.5 TB of bandwidth. Like I said, these caps won't prevail in the long term.

I'm so glad I have T-mobile with my Nexus One. Unlimited Data plan with tethering via the Nexus One with HSPA + at 6Mbps down and 1.8Mbps up FTW!!

If Verizon is smart, they'll double Apple's bandwidth caps:

-> $15 for 400MB/mo
-> $25 for 4GB/mo

Yeah, and 4GB/mo is really good! It's almost like unlimited, because it's really hard to use 4GB's in a phone in a month.

I tried to use the maximum I could when I first got the unlimited plan and could only get to 1.8 GB. And that was with tethering enabled! I think the only way to use more would be to tether and download HD movies...

I think carriers are generally "the bad guy," be it AT&T, Verizon, or whomever. Carriers are the ones who are "out to get us" because that's how they make money. Carriers will stifle innovation if it means it will in any way affect their bottom line and they've been doing it for years. Verizon was probably worse than AT&T until the iPhone took off and they needed to play catch-up.

We all should be critical of carriers... the manufacturers and OS developers are always trying to improve their technology in order to get a leg up on the competition. I know there are AT&T and Verizon "fanboys," but there shouldn't be. We should all be supportive of the developers (Apple, Google, etc.) and critical of the service providers.

HaHAHA! HAHAHA!
Few guys bought smartphones from Verizon and they need tiered data plans?
HAHAHAHAHAHA!
Let's wait for network congestion now....

Hmph. Somehow, this makes me even giddier I downloaded the HandyLight app last night.

Now I know why I check macrumors 20-30 times a day, so I can get in on these small windows of opportunity.

How much does that cost, out of curiosity?

I'm in a family plan with my brother and he doesnt have the data plan or text messaging but I have the unlimited data plan with unlimited text message and we pay $98 a month (with tax). So I pay $60 and he pays $38. I dont talk on the phone very much nor does my brother so we share 750 whenever minutes with nights and weekends free for tmobile to tmobile. I think I use up 200 minutes or something per month at most on calls anyway. But I do use 3G tethering quite ALOT to my notebooks (use around 8GB-9GB per month) in downloads.

I have the 2gb at&t data plan and even after tons of data usage im still within my 2gb limit.... i love saving the 5 bucks a month

grandfather clause:

a clause exempting certain classes of people or things from the requirements of a piece of legislation affecting their previous rights, privileges, or practices.

It's not going anywhere. Especially if an individual does not change their data plan.

Wireless broadband is the primary way everyone will connect to the internet in the future. Home internet will go the way that landlines went--some people still have them but most of use our mobile phones almost exclusively. The carriers want to make sure to get people used to tiered pricing now, before increased usage makes it obvious that flat rates would be much cheaper. That way, when you're paying $200 a month for internet you'll think its "fair".

ATT can do whatever they want.. they've screwed people before, nothings stoppin' them from continuing to.

News flash - all wireless carriers are greedy bastards. I believe there is collusion going on.

No, I think the real issue is that there is simply not enough bandwidth for everyone to go "unlimited".

I also think they are addressing "our" previous complaint about "hey....I paid for an unlimited plan but your lousy network is too slow". Well guess what, they solved that issue. We are now paying per megabyte now.

This might be a good thing since it will force the carriers to improve the network so that we use up our monthly allocation faster.

That is not too bad. Thanks for the info.
