AT&T does know

I talked with an AT&T representative and he did not know anything about the iPod Hotspot for the iPad 2. He said he found some information about iPad 2 Hotspot. It did not sound convincing.

Standing in line is beyond crazy.

It's 2011 where I live and we have the Internet.

Wait in line? I've got more fun things to do than stand in line.

Some people enjoy the experience. I, too, have better things to do.

Maybe Apple will not have a pre-order for shipping to make everyone who wants it day-one, get in line. That way the press will broadcast the hundreds of eager customers who lined up for days.

If so, I can wait a few days or weeks to get mine. I hope they at least have a reservation option.

Pretty smart move by apple. they are guaranteeing the turn out is similar to the Verizon iPhone launch doesnt happen again.

Sure there will be a lot of buyers but this ensures the media attention remains positive and encourages people on the fence that they must have one

Yup, the same people who like going to the mall between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I don't have to worry about parking when I log into my computer. Online deals are generally better and the shipping is free anyhow. Plus, you can often say goodbye to the sales tax.

Get in, get out, then go get a beer.

Buying a consumer electronics device isn't the same as buying handmade crafts.

The iPad from my local Apple Store is the same device as the one at the Fry's up the road. And the iPad at some Best Buy in Detroit. And the iPad at Amazon.com.

wouldn't roll your eyes too much with fangirl delight. Just because they claim those outlets will receive them, you won't know how many have been requested or shipped to each outlet in your respective town. Your local Walmart, BestBuy or Verizon may only get in 10 on launch day, and those 10 maybe the one you don't want.

Wow, nice reply, douche. Who **** in your cornflakes? If supplies were constrained to the analyst estimates, International rollout wouldn't be happening 2 weeks later would it?

Try thinking things through before you open your pie hole.

How is this shocking? Next friday is the 11th.

EDIT: 5pm is a bit late, but it's still the same day, and they made no mention of the time at which it'll go on sale, so... Anywhere between 12am and 11:59pm seems within reason. ;) They're probably trying to launch it when they expect most people will be available to buy it. After school/work.

makes no sense. THey could care less when they expect most people will be available to buy it. As history shows, regardless of the actual launch time (5pm and not 12am and 11:59pm in this case), they KNOW people will line up hours before they go on sale, missing school/work. The same will happen at a 5pm launch. People are still going to miss work/school to line up and get one.

You also can't pretend it's all for news stations to be reporting at their 5pm news, as news never sleeps. As history shows, they'll be out in force regardless of the time (case in point, Black Friday).

It's already been reported by Apple that it's just an arbitrary time they decided on with no meaning. So there's no need to look into it. The stars won't align. Steve won't jump on the mothership and head for his home planet at 5pm. Nothing.
