I can be downloading a webpage AND RECEIVE CALLS AT THE SAME TIME. ONCE THE CALL IS OVER, I can then go back to my browser. I don't see what the big deal really is whether I can browse and talk simultaneously. That makes no difference to me. What I really care about is that my calls can be pushed through even if I am browsing, and that already exists with Verizon.

MOREOVER, if the ability to do that would impede the reliability of my cell phone use at all, I'd hope that they would choose more reliable cell phone usage than technology that probably doesn't get used as much as people say.

ONCE...ONE TIME... one of my many friends that have ATT used his browser while talking to me. And ironically , the call was dropped when he tried it.

e

The same old tired response. You don't see the big deal because you CAN'T do it. Duh!

And further more i been using AT&T since it was Cingular in 2001 and never dropped a call because of using data.

That may work activating a new phone, but not for moving an existing line of service to a new device. You have to do an esn swap, which requires going online or calling Verizon. On a gsm phone, you simply swap SIM cards

Wrong, I switch all the time between my verizon number with different cdma phones.. Call *228 like previously stated and it takes 2 minutes. You guys are so uneducated.

Again, wrong. Turn off your old phone. Turn on the device you wish to activate. Dial *228, when they give you the list of options, select option 3, enter your phone number. Your new device is now activated.

I have an iPhone in Canada through Telus and I have always been able to do both. This works good when I'm tethered to my computer and get an incoming call. I can still browse the net while on the phone. It kinda blows my mind that these features are not yet available in the states. From what I've read, it seems like AT&T is hurting the iPhone more than anything else with it's dropped calls and lack of certain features.

I think you missunderstand, AT&T does support simultaneous voice & data.

It's been pointed out several times that they did on the Droid.

That's only half true. The droid physically had verizon branded on it. It was on the lower front of the device. If vzw did carry the iPhone. It would have to be devoid of any branding PERIOD. And all vow phones carry the carrier name branded physically on the phone.

I'm beginning to wonder if Apple would actually care in this special situation, especially if the phone were only sold on Verizon. It would also lessen buyer confusion.

However, a better guess is that either Verizon wouldn't require branding, or they'd simply include a default body skin with a Verizon mark that you could use or not.

(At least here in the Northeast, it could easily become a badge of distinction to have an iPhone with a red slash checkmark. "Oh, your ATT iPhone doesn't work in this elevator? Use _my_ iPhone instead." etc)

Interesting Article Comparing 3G Networks

PCWorld's latest network study had some surprising news about dropped call rates and 3G network speed. Aside from the Bay Area, it seems that AT&T's dropped call rate is now a whole lot better then Verizon would lead you to beileve. See the article entitled, "AT&T Roars Back in PCWorld’s Second 3G Wireless Performance Test" (can't link for fear this post will get nuked).

Another interesting thing to consider is 3G network speed. AT&T is a bit faster than Verizon in their tests. Will Verizon get faster when it has millions of iPhones added? Not likely. People who think they will see blazing speeds by moving to Verizon will be disappointed, at least until LTE is live in their area... which will probably be much sooner than AT&T will have LTE live.

According to the article, Verizon still has a huge advantage in coverage, but for dropped call rates and 3G speeds, AT&T has coparable or better numbers, at least where 3G is available.

Locally, my 3G coverage is very good but I only get in the 300s kbps for downloads and 200s kbps for uploads. I also only get about one dropped call a month. That leads me to believe that "individual results may vary." :)

Verizon has clearly stated that they want the iPhone. I don't think a stupid thing like branding is going to keep them from signing a deal with Apple. Verizon loves to brand their phones, but I think they are more than capable of making an exception for Apple.

I honestly don't think Verizon would care if they weren't allowed to brand an Apple device on their network. They know how much money they're going to be making off it, no need for further 'advertising.'

Interesting article. To respond to a couple of your statements:
1) We aren't looking to go to Verizon for faster speeds, we are looking to go for more reliable service in general.
2) Like you yourself said, WHERE they have 3G. Verizon's 3G coverage BLOWS AT&T out of the water. So yeah....those numbers are out the window when you get out of a 3G area (like the like I like to frequent, my mother's house, my sister's house, etc....

The carriers are always leapfrogging each other. Sprint had 3G first, Verizon leapfrogged them w/ a superior 3G network, AT&T leapfrogged them w/ HSPA, now Sprint's getting 4G, and next Verizon on LTE. I'm not sold on Sprint's 4G (WiMax) but I would live to get in on Verizon's LTE network ASAP.

There is no need to call a "call center" ..? You dial *228 and select from one of the options, press a button, wait about a minute - your phone is activated.

Yes, this is how it is supposed to work.

However, when a number hasn't been ported properly, *228 activates a temp number and then you need to call. Sometimes, it just fails all together.

And it's always fun calling in and having them tell you you're not an authorized caller even though you manage all the accounts. YAY VERIZON!

You either have to work at Verizon or be a total Verizon fan boy. Also, you say that you have a business account. How many lines do you have to manage? Because when you have a 1000+ mistakes are made quite frequently.

This is pretty funny.. Verizon (via their Driod commercials) has been bashing the iPhone like crazy for the past year. How would they explain carrying it now? Regardless if the network is different, the OS will still be the same across ALL iPhones. Apple isn't going to add vzw bloatware NOR a physical carrier logo on an iPhone. Also, Apple simply will not create a CDMA iPhone. It would increase production costs for them to create a separate line just for a CDMA version especially when CDMA is dying/dead technology. When LTE breaks loose THEN you might see the iPhone on vzw... might.

Verizon had a chance at being the exclusive carrier before AT&T but blew it. Now Apple is gonna make 'em wait. They are making plenty of $$ selling on AT&T in the US. (Why do you think they stuck with AT&T for the data version of the iPad? If vzw's data network is so smokin hot, why didnt they use them for that? the original contract with AT&T did not include the iPad so they were free to choose whatever carrier they wanted for it. They chose AT&T.

VZW needs to worry about the fact that they can't get sell the Droid Incredible because of severe shortages of screens!

The new iPhone will release in a couple of weeks and it will sell like crazy and even more of the Verizon faithless (I say that because they praise vzw so much but will jump ship to get a particular phone on a carrier they swear they hate) will switch to AT&T to get it.

People keep bringing up the DROID ad campaign. I'm still scratching my head on why this would hold Apple (or VZW) back on a potential deal. This is part of BUSINESS and competition.

Doesn't *anyone* remember Apple's Intel attack campaigns a few years back? Boy, that surely prevented Intel chips appear on Macs.

They won't need to. Consumers are sheep for the most part. Yesterday is in the past and we'll look to the bright and shiny future laid out before us by the next advertising campaign. :p

And between Apple and Verizon, business is business. If there is a lot of money to be made, things like this will be forgotten quickly.

Regardless if the network is different, the OS will still be the same across ALL iPhones. Apple isn't going to add vzw bloatware NOR a physical carrier logo on an iPhone.

Agreed, but if Verizon wants it bad enough, and I think they do now, they will probably do like every other iPhone carrier in the world and give in.

Also, Apple simply will not create a CDMA iPhone. It would increase production costs for them to create a separate line just for a CDMA version especially when CDMA is dying/dead technology. When LTE breaks loose THEN you might see the iPhone on vzw... might.

Another uninformed ignorant post regarding CDMA. When LTE breaks loose, THEN you will still need a CDMA radio for voice! LTE will be data only for a while.

Also, you are completely ignoring the fact that Apple has a skunkworks CDMA group. This means they have always entertained the thought of a CDMA iPhone. If it wasn't a possibility at all, this group wouldn't exist.

CDMA is dying/dead just as much as GSM. Both are being left behind for shiny/new technologies.

And increased production costs would be paid for by adding a new customer base. It's pretty simple economics.

Verizon had a chance at being the exclusive carrier before AT&T but blew it. Now Apple is gonna make 'em wait. They are making plenty of $$ selling on AT&T in the US.

Really? Perhaps you didn't notice, but Android outsold iPhones in the US last quarter. I'm not an Android fan, but it's inevitable that the AT&T customer base will become saturated with iPhones (I think it has reached that point already). Apple will get a lot of upgraders, but nothing like they would get with a new customer base like the largest wireless carrier in the US...Verizon.

Edit: Oh, and what of all the upgraders that turn around and sell their 3G and 3Gs iPhones on eBay and CL? This eats into the number of new phones Apple will sell as well.

(Why do you think they stuck with AT&T for the data version of the iPad? If vzw's data network is so smokin hot, why didnt they use them for that? the original contract with AT&T did not include the iPad so they were free to choose whatever carrier they wanted for it. They chose AT&T.

I'm guessing because AT&T made them a smokin' deal on the data. But who knows.

I didn't switch to a carrier I hated to get the iPhone. I thought AT&T would be just fine. I learned to hate them over time after switching. But I also have many apps and accessories that have me tied to the iPhone, so it would be expensive to switch off at this point.

So I'm not "faithless", I'm experienced. I've had experience on the top 3 carriers and I know which one is best for me in the area I live. I'm not praising Verizon, I'm asking to use the phone I prefer, in which I am heavily invested, on a carrier I know works well for my area.

Excellent point!

Cool. So Verizon would be #3 on this bandwagon... Kind of surprised there has been no mention of Sprint already saying this is a go on their 4G network that, surprise, is already up and running.

Like others, I chuckle when people say Verizon is more expensive than AT&T. The prices are basically the same! Saying that, I'll stick to Sprint where only T-Mobile gives them a run for their money on plan pricing.

Some of the arguments FOR voice+data at the same time are laughable as well. "I had to take a phone call, WHILE DRIVING, as I was also using my GPS for turn by turn directions."
