Nice false analogy, there.

A truer comparison would be someone going to an 'all you can eat' buffet, only to be told that they can't eat all they want, or they can only obtain food through a straw, etc.

I mean, you can continue on with your crusade of defending these huge, billion dollar companies from the strenuous effort of dealing with people who tether on their unlimited plans, but trust me - the only thing they care about is maximising profit. It's like home internet here in Canada - they only stopped offering unlimited once people actually started using enough to matter.

Also, I don't know why you're telling me to 'enjoy the free ride' because as I said, I live in Canada and this doesn't impact me. I'm giving you my opinion as an outsider.

So true on the profit part, when they got rid of unlimited they offered 2gb.. yea that might help the 10% that uses less than 2gb but the reason why they did that was to make sure people went over 2gb and pay for 3, 4, 5gb, etc. because most people don't pay attention or have any idea how much they really use so they profit big time! Thats mainly why Verizon got rid of unlimited, to profit off people. An iPhone really isn't a phone, its more of a Internet device with telephone features. (Sony started it actually, long story) Thats why Verizon made 'Share Everything" UNLIMITED MINUTES, UNLIMITED TEXT, 2gb data (cough)...

Ok, maybe not the best analogy. But let's go with the all you can eat buffet analogy. More appropriate.

So this iike me paying for an all you can eat buffet, but then wanting to come for breakfast, lunch and dinner for the same price. And the restaurant saying "no no, it just for one visit".

The "unlimited" plans here in the States had very clear restrictions, and streaming, tethering, and all other manner of siphoning bandwidth with anything other than the phone itself was not allowed. But everyone just focused on the marketing spin of "unlimited". But that doesn't excuse the ignoring of the terms of service, nor the intentional circumvention of these terms because someone feels entitled to something they don't deserve. And what irks me is the culture of entitlement that encourages this anti-social behavior. "Oh, look at me! I'm so cool I can hack the file and circumvent the controls, and I can get unlimited bandwidth even though I don't deserve it!". That's my beef. Its wrong, and if someone gets their panties in a wad when they get called out on it, then boohoo.

Here's the thing about UDP and tethering with Verizon.

If you want to pay the fee for mobile hotspot, it costs $30 a month for 2GB or $50 for 5GB and by paying this fee to enable mobile hotspot on your VZW phone, they take away your UDP!!!!!!!!!! I was on the phone with them about this trying to figure this out....there is no way to pay VZW a fee to use your UDP or even a portion of it while getting a mobile hotspot without going Android, JB, or whatever this option is that I am very interested to hear more about...

----------

Can you confirm this somehow with a source? I'm on Android and use a tethering app and try to be somewhat cautious to not draw too much attention to my data usage (about 7-11GB a month), a VZW store employee told me they do monitor this stuff and could take away your UDP or charge you per their terms of service....

I have UDP and hotspot enabled. I've had it this way for years. I guess not only am I grandfathered for UDP but also hotspot?

Well, first of all, it's crappy to advertise something as unlimited and then say 'well, with these caveats'. And secondly, in a lot of cases people *were* able to tether without anyone saying anything in the beginning. It was only later on when network quality started to decline that the carriers started to enforce it (at least in AT&T's case).

Personally, I just don't think it's all that big of a deal. These are big companies that implement regulations just to try and get the most $$$ out of their customers. That's all.

I'll remember this next time I go to the local Chinese buffet and ask them "hey, can you add a caveat to that all you can eat sign out there? Sometime like "all you can eat in a single visit not to exceed 1 hour and excluding carryout". Not as catchy, but not crappy I guess.

Considering that carriers have contracts involved with termination fees, yup, they should really go for informative but clunky over catchy and deceptive.

I have the UDP and have enabled and disabled the hotspot between jailbreaks. It doesn't take away your UDP. You can just login to the site or use the app on your phone to turn it on. Ready for a jailbreak to get the free hotspot back. I live where cable internet isn't available and satellite internet is flat out ridiculous for what they offer.

"Perfect Citizen" no one truly is.

But seriously, you're arguing with no way of winning.(Going to circles, not really accomplishing anything) You're doing it just to say this is wrong and a bad thing to do and you shouldn't do that. Alright, thanks for the heads up. I'm sure we know what we're doing here. Even if the FCC didn't get involved and Corporations didn't become even more greedy.

Thanks for the morality of our actions.

... I'm sure we know what we're doing here.

Yeah, and that makes it even sadder. But for other folks reading they might get the mistaken impression that what you are doing is right. It isn't. So if someone wants to follow in your footsteps, they do so fully informed. Fabulous.

Thanks for pointing out the lack of morality of our actions.

Not sure what you were trying to say here. It makes no sense to me. Maybe if you add the words "pointing out the lack of" in front of morality, it would make a little more sense. I fixed it for ya. :p

yes dude, we got you, now go away.

If you want to use the "all you can eat" analogy, then a better one would be....

All you can eat but you can't share with others at the table.....That is what Verizon and ATT and doing with their unlimited plans. They don't want you to share with others at the table (your iPad or Notebook).

That's a good one.

How old are you guys? 12?

no, your responses and trolling of this forum, where we try to find an answer for a question, is more like a 5 year old.
now please, just go away and do it somewhere else, maybe at the buffet you were talking about...

This wasn't meant to be a moral discussion, just if this can be done. But since were on the subject I figure I pay verizon quite a bit and being able to tether should be allowed. I mean let's face it eventually all these tiered data plans will be the thing of the past, remember when minutes were tiered? These networks become cheaper to operate but companies like verizon and pretty much any other network need to increase profits. I don't tether often but when I do I don't want to pay an extra fee to do so, period.

On that note, I have UDP and just downloaded the my verizon app and can add or remove tethering on my plan without any problems with my UDP as far as I know, it has worked fine this way and since I remove it after lets say a single days use I get just the prorated charge.

Until there is a jailbreak I hope there is a way to edit the plist file like I showed in the first post or some how a tethering app sneaks its way into the app store.

Just Google it. There are a ton of links on it. They use to get mad and threaten to charge customers then the FCC fined them.

By the way, I have unlimited data and pay $30 to get unlimited tethering. I did it with the Verizon iOS app and changed features.

So, anyone have any actual news? Or are we still having a pizzing contest here?

Per itweakios it's a no go due to iOS 8. My 2 posts with itweakios response got lost by the 5 yo trying to control the world.

In other words, getting something they are not entitled to. Because Verizon doesn't have the right to limit hotspot usage to metered plans.

Exhibit 2 of the entitlement culture. You guys realize it is 2014, and they have these things called "computers" that can detect this behavior.

Just how high is that horse you're sitting on?

Does anyone with Verizon UDP have a hotspot option in iOS8 without paying the extra charge?

No.

This is not accurate.

With VZ and UDP, there is a $30 tethering option which will allow you to tether using unlimited data. It does not lose your UDP.

I remember in the old android days all you had to do was change the entitlement check on moto phones from =1 to =0 and you would have hotspot. I used to pay $60 to tether two unlimited lines but vzw's ridiculous prices and the fact they began allowing tethering on their tiered plans made me decide to stop being ethical. I am not paying for the same data twice. Look fwd to seeing where this thread goes.
