Forget about the "I hear verizon in NYC is not
Good". It depends on where you are:

Staten Island, Brooklyn, queens, the Bronx, Manhattan, elevator, in a high rise, subway, on the street, in a vehicle traveling on the streets. Due to the topography of the landscape in NYC good coverage can vary by inches for each if the four carriers.

Between verizon and ATT there is no wrong decision.

I live in NYC (queens) and I previously had sprint. LTE was lousy when available and hardly ever available...I recently switched to Verizon and have absolutely no issues with LTE. The only issue with Verizon is penetrating through buildings.

True, Ive literally taken two steps in one direction and went from full bars to 2.

In Tallahassee they are essentially the same, AT&T is maybe slightly faster than VZW. But at the coast, the woods of surrounding rural counties and SW Georgia where I spend much of my free time VZW still has blazing LTE speeds while AT&T is completely unusable...

Does voice work (on AT&T) in the areas that data doesn't?

The OP was asking for assistance and I offered what I heard - haven't been to NYC but I have experienced the rants my NYC friend spews about Verizon service there .....but as I always say YMMV

NYC is a big place and it's more than probable there is a loss of signal somewhere, above, at or below the ground on some square inch.

Your rant spewing friend may have service or phone issues as I get good voice coverage in the boroughs as well as manhattan. Data is good enough, I don't take a speedtest every other foot and I don't walk around looking at the number of bars with every step as I go through the day.

It might help the op if your "friend" actually listed some bad locations, for verizon service in NYC can be quite good, although I'm sure there are problem areas.

Not that serious buddy

It's your friend, your words.

My attempt was to share what I heard from a friend who Is unhappy with their service in NYC not to discount others with perfect Verizon service in NYC

I'm done with this thread OP my suggestion is do a trial and see if it works for you. Gooood Luck

Who's faster?

Looking to leave sprint. Which one is faster and better?

I have Verizon, and it works pretty well 3/4 G, speeds are fast for me. Just make sure the phone will work in YOUR area. ATT does not work at my house in TN, I sent them back.

I put up with 4 years of awful AT&T service in Southern California when they had iPhone exclusivity. I switched to Verizon 2 years ago and don't see myself going back. I am on a grandfathered ~$70 month Verizon plan which may not be available anymore. I convinced my parents to switch from AT&T to Verizon as well.

I am now using Verizon and loving it (Chicago area). I also had T-Mobile and loved their data speed in IL. If you get Att you won't be able to switch to another carrier if needed if it is locked. Verizon is sold unlocked out of the box.

I've noticed it this way, Verizon has a bit better coverage but the speeds aren't too fast, good for calling and messaging but terrible for data. Around ~2MB on my friend's iPhone on "3G" and around ~7MB on LTE. AT&T has a bit less coverage but has much superior compared to Verizon. Also can talk and surf. Noticed around 5~7MB on HSPA+ and around ~12MB on LTE. Verizon tends to be more expensive then AT&T. Depends a lot where you live too.

A lot depends on the backend server. The top two tests were done seconds apart with two servers in NYC. This shows it's not always the back haul that is the bottleneck.

In NYC overall, you would be happier with AT&T. Have used both and AT&T has better speeds. However in congested areas doesn't matter who you have, it will be slow. I currently have T-Mobile and they are faster in most places I've been too. Sprint on iphone is awful. If iPhone 6 gets Spark enabled, sprint will be pretty fast too. Seen 50 Mbps in NYC right now. I say test out both and choose what works best. 14 days to cancel if you don't like it. You can port in anytime after your test trial.
