Vertex 3 2011 Macbook Pro 17" pathetic read performance

I've just installed in my new Macbook Pro 17", an OCZ Vertex 3 SSD and to my horror, nothing seem to work properly! Even for action as simple as click, I get a beach ball and I have to wait in some instances up to 2 minutes. When I restarted my computer, it took more then 5 minutes to load the system. Now, instead of having the fastest Laptop, I've got the slowest one. Can someone recommend a solution, please?

Did you try PRAM and SMC resets after install?

here is a test I ran on my 13" mbp with the vertex 3 ssd... not sure how to judge results...

I got exactly the same problem! This drive is not working correctly in a Macbook 2011.

No i didnt enable the TRIM hack.

PRAM/SMC reset did it all but no go!

Firstly, May I ask if you have the 17" MBP?

Secondly, have you tried the drive in a different machine, e.g. a win machine to ascertain whether the primary issue is with the SSD itself?

If, the drive is within the return period, e.g 1st 15/30 days - ask for a refund/exchange

If not, i would post over on the ocz forums for RMA; and also check with apple to have u're machine exchanged - as digilloyd did (from wat i remember) stating you think you may have one of the 17" MBP with the affected sata cables

You could also try the OWC sata cable shielding kit! - this for me is a last resort and unacceptable solution IMO - if the problem is hardware related apple need to address this by replacing either the sata cable, +/- motherboard - or the whole damn machine! I can give 2 hoots if apple support sata 6 or not - the fact that they included the sata 6 ports in the 2011 MBP - they are in a way forced to address the issue.

My Vertex 3 240GB installed well and is working perfectly in my 2011 17". I did replace the HD cable prior to installation. It now appears that the latest MacBook Pros being sold are working correctly.

Naturally, Apple has nothing to say about this issue.

I will never be an early purchaser of new Mac computer models. I was lucky this time, but others have not been so fortunate.

he he I learned that a while ago. I usally wait 3-4 months after apple releases something. I have found on many occasions that Apple has not admited to issues but corrected them. Though to be honest, the average user would never notice. Its just us nerds :)

@johnnyturbouk

Yes i have a Macbook 17 2011 Model.

I just switches my Vertex 3 for a new to see if it was een faulty drive..

Here we dont have Apple stores only lame resellers :( which redirect you to a Apple repair center and the only do something when apple gives them a YES.

So when i called Apple support they say sorry you have build on your own drive thats non Apple so we cant help you.

I didnt replace the cable because at OWC blog they tested and it was no related.

bollocks - excuse my plebeian language

but apple need a gentle reminder that several reputable online blogs have identified an issue with apple hardware - just because it seems for the moment to be functioning with the stock hdd does not justify apple selling defective goods - thanks god for the UK sales of good acts and our tough consumer protection laws - alas, there is always watchdog with the charismatic and sassy Anne Robinson

might write in if my sata6 drive is affected!

New OCZ Vertex 3 drive gives the exact same issues :(

Called apple and they send me a macbook 17 replacement!

Update:

Got my replacement Macbook 17" 2011, this macbook works great with the Vertex 3!

Hello b0rg, I have got the same configuration and problem like yourself and could you please, advise me how to approach Apple. Perhaps, repair ID would be very helpful. Thank you in advance.

Greetings,

I'm seeing some disturbingly pathetic read performance on my shiny new 17" MacBook Pro w/my equally shiny and new Vertex 3 SSD.

Here are the Xbench results:

Code:
       Disk Test	154.09
		Sequential	105.64
			Uncached Write	503.08	308.88 MB/sec [4K blocks]
			Uncached Write	521.73	295.19 MB/sec [256K blocks]
			Uncached Read	91.73	26.85 MB/sec [4K blocks]
			Uncached Read	43.36 21.79 MB/sec [256K blocks]
		Random	284.65
			Uncached Write	2638.43	279.31 MB/sec [4K blocks]
			Uncached Write	920.23	294.60 MB/sec [256K blocks]
			Uncached Read	2886.75	20.46 MB/sec [4K blocks]
			Uncached Read	81.70 15.16 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Be glad you don't have the Vertex 2 240.

Code:
System Version 10.6.7 (10J869)
		Model MacBookPro4,1
		Drive Type OCZ-VERTEX2

Disk Test	175.23
		Sequential 109.03
			Uncached Write	174.27	107.00 MB/sec [4K blocks]
			Uncached Write	106.39	60.20 MB/sec [256K blocks]
			Uncached Read 58.37	17.08 MB/sec [4K blocks]
			Uncached Read 226.32	113.75 MB/sec [256K blocks]

		Random	446.10
			Uncached Write	776.42	82.19 MB/sec [4K blocks]
			Uncached Write	189.88	60.79 MB/sec [256K blocks]
			Uncached Read 1374.77 9.74 MB/sec [4K blocks]
			Uncached Read 593.55 110.14 MB/sec [256K blocks]

On second thought, your 256k uncached read scores are quite awful.

No i cant give you the repair id (privacy reasons).
I think i got lucky to get a replacement, but told them i have heating issues and SATAIII problems.

Point them to the macperformanceguide, OWC, bearfeats site regarding the ssd issue.

The replacement model doesn't get warm as my first macbook 2011..
