If it says your optical port is link speed 6Gb then it IS 6Gb.

Unfortunately mine says 3GB Link Speed for my Optibay Drive bay.

Is this a hardware change or can the older 2011 MBP be updgraded through a firmware update?

He always has issues. He's either a really unlucky guy or perhaps it's the beta drives he gets which he then hammers with benchmarking tools?

Mine is fine. It's not a beta though. And I haven't tried to kill it. Yet.
Lol, I'm sure thats it. I've had the chance to talk to him a few times and he's a really nice guy.

Anyway, in the two months since I first posted this thread it looks like enough testing and firmware updates have been issued to stabilize the Vertex 3. I ordered one from Amazon a couple of days ago and I'm just waiting for it to ship and I'll install it. I've been around long enough that I don't enjoy being the earliest adopter and helping debug a product.

i brought my CTO 3 weeks ago - as i wanted to wait for the initial storm of a new product and potential bugs to be panned out!

My hdd is linked as sata 6 and the optibay is linked as sata-3:

HDD:

Intel 6 Series Chipset:

Vendor: Intel
Product: 6 Series Chipset
Link Speed: 6 Gigabit
Negotiated Link Speed: 3 Gigabit
Description: AHCI Version 1.30 Supported

ODD:

Intel 6 Series Chipset:

Vendor: Intel
Product: 6 Series Chipset
Link Speed: 3 Gigabit
Negotiated Link Speed: 3 Gigabit
Description: AHCI Version 1.30 Supported

:eek::eek::eek::eek:
That sucks - or i would of got x2 240gb sf2000

Anyone confirmed the optibay with a link speed of sata-6 to perform at sata-6 speeds???

Hmm, I wonder what would happen if you take your laptop into an Apple store and ask for the hardware update??

They'd say "go away". Others have said the optical drive is not an officially authorised user-replaceable part.

i've had the "your mac need to be restarted. press and hold the power button to turn off" gray screen three times with my vertex 3 240gb. two times was when i was using my iphone to tether with usb cable. don't know what that was about.

i'm getting about 485MB/s or so... i wish i got 500+, but does that really matter in real life? no...

oh, and the hdd in the optibay is 3 gigabit. aaargh! should have waited... so there is an unused sata 3 port? why?

Every MacBook Pro I have ever purchased has had a logic board failure within the 1st 6 to 12 months, so the way I look at is when this one fries [I do a ton of HD editing] I'll take it to have the logic board replaced and voila I should receive an updated 6 Gigabit optical drive port. No biggy...

Whoa.. Got any tips on how to make a logic board fail? ;)

On the topic of Vertex 3's, what kind of temperature is everyone seeing with their drives? Mine consistently runs around 128 degrees Celsius using iStat Pro. Just wondering if that's warmer than it should be. This is the 256GB Vertex 3 inside of a 15" 2011 MacBook Pro.

- The 128 degrees celsius you are seeing is not correct. iStat Pro has problems reading the temperatures of SSDs, it appears. You temperature is more likely around 30-40 degrees celsius.

mine also reads 128˚C. it's not a real temp. just a bug... no fix yet.

I'd missed that discussion. I figured it had to be wrong ... otherwise the bottom of my laptop would probably be melting or my apartment would be on fire. Thanks for the tip.

I got a Vertex 3 120 GB SSD today to replace my Vertex 2 60 GB SSD in my 2009 17" MacBook Pro (5,2) and put it in the optibay via a data doubler from www.hardwrk.com. I put the original HDD (Hitachi 500 GB, 5400 RPM) in the HDD bay.
As I accidentally put the Vertex 2 in the data doubler and booted from it, I knew all was well. System Profiler reported Link Speed and Negotiated Link Speed as 3 Gigabit for the Vertex 2.
After switching the the Vertex 2 with the Vertex 3, I only get a Negotiated Link Speed of 1.5 Gigabit while the Link Speed is still reported as 3 Gigabit.
I run Mac OS X 10.6.8.

Does anyone know, what I can do?

I already tried an SMC reset and will now switch the HDD with the SSD, but I wanted the HDD in the HDD bay due to the SMS.

EDIT:

The switch did not help, System Profiler still reports the same Negotiated Link Speed of 1.5 Gigabit and a Link Speed of 3 Gigabit, on both the HDD (now in optibay) and the SSD (now in HDD bay).

Now I will switch the Vertex 3 with the Vertex 2 again. Btw, I have cloned the Vertex 2 to the Vertex 3 via CarbonCopyCloner, so it shouldn't be the system. But I guess, I will try a reinstall tomorrow.

Okay, switched the Vertex 3 with the Vertex 2, Vertex 2 shows 3 Gigabit, and Vertex 3 (in optibay) shows 1.5 Gigabit.
Btw, the Vertex 3 has the latest firmware, version 2.15, the Vertex 2 is still at 1.22, even though 1.35 is out.
