I have a MBP 15' late 2013.
I'm experiencing the same problem. In my experience, it gets "clicky" when is loading something (like opening a new tab or scrolling on Facebook feed).

Also, it clicks louder when changing screen resolution.

Quite annoying at night, but I'm afraid people at Apple Customer Service won't even notice during the day... is not so loud.

So, anyone knows how to fix it or why does it happen?

Thanks a lot.

Mine also does this, though rarely enough but loud as hell when it does do it.

Has been doing it since the day I opened it 3 months ago, but seems safe enough. No disaster yet.

What shocks me is why a computer which only mechanical parts are the fans can make that noise. Where does it come from?? It is clear that is not a fan problem...

I have a couple of questions then:

Why the sound appears mostly when loading graphic content, or changing screen resolution (as I was doing in my video)?

Why does the sound comes only from the bottom-left part of the laptop (at least in my case)? The springs seem to be distributed everywhere, not only on that area.

Thanks a lot, TheIguana.

Having the same problem. A very faint sporadic clicking sound.... Almost like it randomly creaks, even when not touching it.

Thought it could be a broken fan trying to start...

In my case it is clearly not a fan problem (because of where the sounds comes, and because of the type of the sound).

Same here... Clicking when moving the laptop around. No problem when the machine is stable, but annoying anyway. Really interested to hear that this does not represents any mechanical problem...

For everyone who has this "clicking noise" problem, check to see if it happens when unplugged or only when plugged in.

I had the same issue (only when plugged in) and it turned out to be a problem with the charger and the outlet it was plugged into.

I have no idea why that would cause a clicking noise in the laptop itself, but that was definitely the issue for me.

+1 the same questions.
Exactly the same noise. And it appears not always, but mostly, when I scrolling content in browser.

Probably I will go too apple service and show your video as example..

GoingDark, in my case it clicking independently is it charging or not.

I have faint noise, though more of a scratch than a click, coming from the qwerty area. It requires no touch and is noticed when the SSD is being accessed. It is independent of AC power but I believe it is louder while plugged in. I can reproduce this sound every time by booting Recovery in a silent room. I live in a concrete building and only notice this sound in the middle of the night. The noise also appears while scrolling (some) websites in Safari and to a lesser extent while compressing a few GB of photos.

Best way to describe the sound is that of an old hard drive being accessed with a some beeping thrown in. It is unlike xuso's clicking. With my ear pressed to the bottom it the sound is in the exact area of the SSD. Though I have a late 2013 13" Retina 2.4/8/256. I am heading to the Apple store Monday.

@ethameta great explanation. Exactly the same. Please get in touch and let us know, what Apple answer about that!

all these posts and no solution/answer

Having the same problem near the right of the trackpad on a mid 2014 retina 13"

I have the same model (late-2013 15-inch.) Two weeks ago, I started hearing what sounds like a ringing sound whenever I pick up the laptop with my hand towards the back. Pressing on the area where the words "MacBook Pro" are printed, I can hear the same sound. I brought it to the Genius Bar, and they opened it up. They didn't find anything out of the ordinary. There was nothing loose, and they even tightened the screws on the logic board. I still hear the sound though. Seems odd for this to be "normal."

I'm thinking of opening it up myself and poke around. I want to verify that it's these grounding screws/pins mentioned earlier. I just need to buy the screwdriver from iFixit. However, will opening it void my Apple Care?

!!!

holy cow! my macbook has the same problem, it is brand new... 2015 13" mbp....

seriously... how hard is it to make a good laptop in 2015?? i mean the only moving part on this computer is the fan...

i took mine into genius bar, they cleaned out the inside (no charge) - problem gone.

I bring it to apple service (Cyprus) - they hold my mac for 2 weeks and only, that they answer me - "I didn't hear anything, and can't reproduce this sound". And it was my last week of warranty. They don't even try to find solution by opening the mac. Sad but true..

Does it happen when you are using the computer on a desk (solid surface) mine only makes noise when using the computer on my lap or the bed, which leads me to believe it might be something flexing inside, it sounds remarkably similar to the one in the top post but that seems like it's happening on a stable surface so.... ???
