Unfortunately , Ipads do not garner as much release hype as Iphones do .
That has proven several times since the launch of the Ipad 4 . The general public do not replace them yearly like they do phones

I hear you. Then why have the smart keyboards been impossible to come by?

That's because Apple can't get their crap together with accessories , 12.9" has already seen many discounts right after it launched and keyboards and pencils were hard to get, it has little correlation to iPad Pro sales

Yes, exactly my point. They release a new product but the accessories are no where to be found for weeks afterwards. Why not delay the launch a week and have proper supplies?

Probably has much to do with launching new products for quarterly earning reports. The 12.9" launch was laughable with most buy the gigantic thing and not having a keyboard or pencil. The 9.7", I personally would never get the keyboard for it, jus the pencil

Wait, people really expected lines and overcrowded stores for a new iPad? Outside of the original iPad launch in 2010 when did Apple have lines for iPad launches?

I don't think the OP, and many posters in this thread, want fact, sadly.

Isn't it entirely possible that the whole lines thing outside Apple stores is passé, especially for products that are 6+ years old? It's like when people use the traffic around Apple Watch tables to suggest the product is a flop. Um, people don't stand around that table because the watches are under a piece of glass and there's nothing you can do with them. And when I see people at iPad or Mac tables all they're usually doing is browsing the internet.

This is a soft product launch. When the iPhone 7 is released I expect to see the usual hysteria and long lines.

There hasn't been buzz for the iPad since the iPad 3 introduced the retina screen, the sharp drop in sales has been interesting to watch

And iOS on the iPad is still crippled

I live in San Jose, Ca where tons of us normally jump on the latest tech. I also admit that I'm one of those "old" Apple fans that LOVED waiting in long lines outside Valley Fair mall on launch days. I was (strangely) disappointed when I walked into the mall, on launch day, to get my wife a rose gold 9.7 ipp an there was ZERO people waiting in line. I was working out of the country and missed the last couple of major product launch days, so zero line was a different experience for me. Don't get me wrong, getting a product without waiting in line has its benefits but I just missed the Apple launch day vibes of the past. Maybe it will be like the old days when iPhone 7 comes out?

I believe the iPad 2 had it also. I seem to recall seeing it on the morning news back when my work shift started at 9am. I don't know about subsequent iPad launches since I've stopped watching the morning news when my shift start changed to 6am.

iPad 2 also had long launch lines. I know, I stood in that line, iPad 3 was when supply matched demand, and scalpers ended up returning the iPads in large numbers, because they couldn't get any buyers. And then iPad 4 released a little over half year after 3, and there were no lines because many people chose to skip that one. Since then, there hasn't really been big lines for the iPad.

Yep...my recollection as well.
