Still not buying it.

The sapphire crystal on the front of the watch is and always has been far better quality than the backs. Any "sapphire" on the back is just an additive in small quantity, and it's got to be "sapphire" in the same way the iPhone's camera lens is sapphire. (Mine's scratched just from pocket lint.)

Apple may have just enough sapphire in there to legally call it sapphire crystal, but it's not sapphire crystal.
Ok, whatever suits you. All we have on hand is a sapphire crystal on the back (that’s what Apple calls it in their spec) up until you can show a material analysis that proves different.

Another possibility is dirt or particles on the charging puck. i.e. you scratch your watch when you place it on the charging puck.

I have this issue with the S7 watch (that I traded in already). There were numerous scratches on the sensor area of the watch.

If the watch was defective it wouldn’t likely be in a pattern. Looks like something is scratching in a consistent pattern. OP hasn’t answered about his charging Device.
No, they haven’t, and frankly, I think there is more info missing.
Re the charger, I kinda doubt it could do something like that, the scratches are what, at least 1cm long? And so many of them

How dry is your skin? Scratches seem to be straight than curved or Freeform. I wonder if the band is causing? Where do you charge the watch?
Original charger, definitely clean surface. Thanks for asking.

I have two original charger, one is bought with my watch S4 in 2019, the other one is bought with my Ultra, by the way my S4 is completely without any scratches on the backside.

thanks to all who is asking about the charger , I got this Ultra about 4 weeks ago, and scratches shows up after first 2 weeks, I charged generally every 2 days. so I don’t think so less times charging will cause those scratches.

Same goes for the link bracelet I would assume.
It is impossible for the link bracelet to scratch the back of the watch. It does not fully collapse like the Milanese loop. It never touches the back glass when not wearing it. I have both the SB link bracelet and gold Milanese loop that I have used for several years on my S6 SS Gold AW and the back glass is still in pristine condition to this day.

If you take the watch off, keep the clasp open and place the watch face down, sure it‘ll touch the back.

Here‘s a pic of my SSLB ;-)

Well I guess I have more sense than to leave it like that when not wearing it. I have always returned the clasps to the closed position after I take off the watch so it retains the true watch shape even when resting on a table or charging overnight.

These kind of threads are pointless 'I do not know how it got scratched, does anyone experience the same?'. To be able to answer the question we would have to know in precise detail the daily life of the OP because I can guarantee you the OP will not be wearing the watch from dawn to dusk without ever taking if off his wrist only to charge. The OP scratched it, how? only the OP will know because we do not have a camera looking at him 24/7 to know how he handles his watch on a daily basis.

THIS!

I reckon it could be titanium from the strap clasp accidently coming into contact at some point. If so, Cape Cod or other metal polish would remove it.

I had marks on my SB bracelet strap which was titanium from the inside of the Ultra when sliding the strap in and it bothered me. Was very happy to find it came off with Cape Cod.

Me too but since we don’t know how much sense the OP has…😜

Haha, yes, in such case only I want to take time to prove : it is not caused by me.. the most of others would in the first place to believe: the owner scratched it without knowing it.
Anyway, thanks to all of you leaving your words here, I will go to Apple Store in one week after my vacation, just want to ask if it COULD be a quality issue.
All of my iPhones iPads have scratches, I am used to the ”imperfect” , this time just want to know the truth. :)

If they are on the outside surface, you should be able to feel them.

To me, it looks like a manufacturing defect.
I need to correct myself , I can feel the scratches by using a needle sliding over the scratches. just figured it out. :( .

If Apple can't help you (which I believe will be the result) at least the scratches are on the back of the watch where they can't be seen..

Yep, kind of like the scratches on the bottom of the front bumper that happen when a car with low clearance meets a steep driveway. Good that only you (and your mechanic) know they are there, but still somehow aggravating.

I would have thought it could only have something to do with your charger, because your wrist wouldn't do it. Unless you're taking it off and stuffing it inside your pocket, or something

Zero

reality TV. Bring on the cameras.

Regardless of how or when the scratches got there, the OP's watch looks poorly assembled to me.

Does anyone else have an Ultra that has such obvious uneven transitions between the sensors and the surrounding material?

Will be able to use Apple's AR/VR headset for that, record everything that you do whilst wearing it. No more mystery scratches, bumps or scrapes :)

New conspiracy begins, brought to you on Apple vision Pro.

I am not party to any conspiracy theories. My theory is that the OP got a poorly assembled watch. I would expect others to say theirs are assembled very well, or that they don't see uneven transitions in that area.
