I'd disagree with that, there's plenty of uses for this feature if it does a good enough job.

Yes, people look at these "features" and see them as standalone, as though Apple builds these features as islands.

Not the case. They build "capabilities" into the platforms, and those capabilities may be realized through certain features, such as this one, but the bigger picture is that the platform gains new smarts that can be applied elsewhere, too. The research and development span deeper and wider than most users realize.

My problem is that it adds a white background as far as I could see. It should remove the background all together so it looks nice no matter what „background“ your chat conversation has on WhatsApp for example (blending in better) or to use them for other things. Right now you still need to do an extra step of removing the white background to really take advantage of it

speaking of that, i noticed that in the new home screen stuff in ios16 the time was partially displayed behind the kids in the photo, so it must be the same code at work here?

edit: this, on the left:

Did you even watch the video? There is clearly no white background added to the cut outs.

It depends on where you paste it / drag it to, no?

And that's why I find it a little bit terrifying Mike. We've gone from hours for a skilled professional to a couple of clicks by a complete idiot.

I sometimes worry that ultimately, “eh, good enough” sort of solutions like this could ruin livelihoods.

Look at illustrators that do commissions and people think because they can download free “eh, it’ll do” vector images the artists should work for free or for a ridiculously low wage.

I heard similar things from professional photographers because most people have phones with decent cameras that allow them to take “eh, good enough, I guess” types of photos - so why pay for a professional to take professional pictures? 😕

Is there a way - or what might the workflow be - to adjust the white balance of the copied subject? I’m asking since adjusting to (better) match the white balance of the image we are pasting into would be nice. For example, could I paste the image into its own otherwise-blank image, adjust color, snd re-copy?

Despite what the article and video says, you can't paste the selection into a new picture. You need another app or device to do anything with the picture (such as pasting it into another picture to make a meme).
