GoodPlayer 1.6 released. Lots of issues on Video Beagle's review were solved. Such as vob/mpg no sound issue, some mp4 files could not be played by iPod plugin issue... Thank you, Video Beagle!:)

What's New in Version 1.6
1. A new application icon
2. DVD LPCM Audio (lpcm) support added, this fixed some VOB/MPG files no sound issue. Thanks VideoBeagle for GoodPlayer review report and test files.
3. Performance improved for media files with AC-3 audio, now 720P AVI file (1280x720 AVI/MPEG-4 video/AC-3 audio) can be played back smoothly on iPad 1st Generation. Please note for the 720P test result, it is with MPEG-4 video, not with the H.264/AVC video
4. RealVideo (RM, RMVB) playback performance improved greatly

Buzz Player HD deserves a mention as well. Excellent application - streams from NAS or stores locally and plays back MKV files as well. Playback so far for me has been flawless on the iPad 2.

I went ahead and purchased BUZZ Player today and was immediately disappointed...the question is were my expectations too high? I downloaded 3 different .mkv files with .x264 encoding and all 3 suffered from video lag relative to audio. Plus they were in at least one case a bit jerky. Is it too much to expect this level of encoding to be able to play on an IPAD2?

It appears that xvid files do work....but I was hoping to take advantage of the greater resolution of .x264.

I've not had this problem with the latest version. What res were your movies?

Were you streaming or playing locally? Have you changed any settings to try and improve playback?

I was playing locally. I changed to BUZZ Player Engine but that was worse. Changed Decoding to High Speed, no better. If there is something I am missing I'd be glad to try it.

I have sent an email to BUZZ support.

I just tried streaming a couple of 720p movies from my NAS and they played back fine. They were widescreen format so res was 1280x544 & 1280x536. Perhaps your movie was a higher bitrate or it was full 720 instead of the widescreen of my examples?

The res is 1280 x 720 which I assume is full 720. The bitrate was 3830 Kpbs - is that high?

Whered did you get the video file from? I'm finding an incomplete version on usenet, and if from there, that could be your problem.

I got it from usenet, and it was complete. This has also happened with another mkv file I tried.

Does the player support dual-core decoding on iPad 2? You can ask developer.
If not, 720P MKV is impossible to be played back smoothly on iPad 2.

Hmm...Everytime I try to DL it, I get 31,871,295 file, which Par tells me is complete, needing to be 32,255,295, needing 1 recovery block which isn't available.

Is there a way for you to get your email address to me so I can SendThisFile it to you?

Well, I have to be honest and say that I decided to RTFM...and it did say under "Playing Files" that BUZZ Player can only be guaranteed to play "with perfect quality" files up to 720 x 576, which is approximately DVD quality. My files are general at a much higher, HD-level resolution. Maybe I need to work on converting them from AC3 to AAC codec. This would be closer to being supported by IOS, from what I understand.

It would be nice if BUZZ Player support would reply to my emails...it's been a few days and no response.

I normally get a good response from their support but I did email them last week about something and haven't heard back yet.
I did find a 720p movie that would not play back properly and stuttered a bit with loss of sync, it was a full 1280x720 resolution so maybe the extra height of pixels over the resolution that did work for me (1280x560ish) is what passes it's support threshold?

Okay..success! I downloaded Handbrake, converted the mkv file to an IPAD version...and it worked! I highly recommend it! All you have to do is use the IPAD preset as your output type.

Yes and this will play back fine in the standard video player. The reason for these app are to avoid the need to convert the movie first.

which players allow wifi transfer via SMB/samba and local storage within the app?

AvplayerHD is excellent but does not offer this.
