video cards in 2006 mac pro

Ah, that explains it. From another perspective, I guess you really would've put in as many graphic cards, if only you could do so, into the system.

Do you have any other machines working on Folding@Home?

yep. and i did just put in another 9800GT and have it folding also. we'll see how they do overnight.

i do have another i7 pc folding. i have my 2009 mbp gpu folding, and i have a 2006 mbp running the smp for folding (cpu in os x). i think that's it.

i'd rather run OS X for the gpu folding, but i guess that'll take a while. and even if i could, this mac pro can't use the newer cards anyways

You don't have to feel too sad. even the 2009 mac pros have rather limited choices if we assume only official Apple supported graphic cards.

But I can understand how you feel the lack of ability to run better cards in Bootcamp. You are limited by the PCI Express 1.x. Most cards these days has an entry requirement of 2.0.

Apple appears to allow users to upgrade their pro desktop systems, but they want to dictate the general users what they can upgrade without cannibalizing new sales. Very in line with most companies do these days - not-built-to-last. A limited lifespan. Gone are the days where we can use an Apple Pro system for years without suffering some sort of hinderance.

yeah, you make a good point. maybe that will someday change. i do hope early next year they release a mac pro with the first i9 processors in it at least
