These windows are small and the apps on the side are taking up too much room. And we have a dock below it all taking up more space. Amazing how Apple is trying to do everything they can to revamp the traditional windows gui, only to make something more cumbersome and resource intensive (we really need an M1 just to do that???).

You CAN hide the dock and sidebar in this mode. However, I question how much more productive this makes the iPad compared to the current form of multitasking. Just seems like a more visually appealing way of doing something similar to what we have now.

Anyone know where I can download the wallpaper featured in this video?

Stage Manager looks very useful. I know it is a total pipe dream but I would love it if Apple allows a future iPhone to be plugged into a dock and then have the Stage Manager UI on the external screen.
Yes. Probably iPhone 15 or later with M2 chip. 😜

Think we’ll be able to use the iPad Pro in clamshell (Smart Cover closed) mode when plugged in to an external monitor? You’d have to be using a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse of course
My understanding is that this does not work, at least with the current beta.

Yes. Why introduce this new Stage Manager taking screen space, when we already had the App Switcher?

Never mind. Coreymac84 beat me to it.

Nope. Tim AAPL wants you to buy an iPhone, an iPad and a Mac. All three. Each device must have its own limitations and flaws, so none of them will be your everything.

Well, they were showing off the new feature on the 12.9” not 11” during the keynote.
Which is great for 12.9” owners. For this 11” owner those floating icons should be better scaled if they expect me to actually use the feature.

The M1 iPads get Swap Memory and that is required for Stage Manager, so Stage Manager has an SoC requirement not a RAM requirement.
… except according to Apple’s own keynote, Memory Swap is available on the 4th Gen iPad Air, 5th Gen 12.9” Pro and 3rd Gen Pro, yet Stage Manager won’t be enabled on them.
Physical RAM > Virtual RAM.

Physical RAM > Virtual RAM.
I'm not sure what they said at the Keynote, but according to Apple's website, Virtual Memory Swap is:
"Available on iPad Air (5th generation) with a minimum of 256GB storage, iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th generation) and iPad Pro 11-inch (3rd generation)."

Where in there keynote did they say that?

As RL said, Apple's site says that swap is an M1 feature.

  • Freeform app - Later this year, Apple will launch a new Freeform app that's designed to be a collaborative canvas for working on projects with others. It supports real-time collaboration and can be used for brainstorming, outlining new projects, and more. It supports Apple Pencil for a digital whiteboard experience, and it works with SharePlay in FaceTime and Messages.

My faborite feature is of course stagemanager but i have a ipad mini 6th 🥺

Keynote said 5th gen iPad Air. There was a typo on Apple’s iPadOS 16 preview page showing 4th gen Air but that’s been corrected now.

This isn’t a serious list right?
Weaper App is a low impact addition. Freeform isn’t available on BETA.

Anyway, my favourite features are:
1. Files app improvements
2. Remind me later flag for emails
3. customizeable toolbars
4. Books app improvements

I trust Apple and didn’t mean to start a debate about Stage Manager. I use multitasking in iOS 15 and the side-by-side makes each app smaller, but I choose to use it and it is value added. If Stage Manager is better yet, then that’s great.

I’m just speculating a bit, but reserving judgment until I have iOS 16 to try it out.

This, paired with Samsung’s ~14” Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra leads me to believe that Stage Manager is debuting before the advent of a new, larger iPad Pro - one which can fit all those windows.

iPad looking to take over MBP use case space. For now, I am satisfied with M1 Max MBP and a 2nd generation iPad Pro. With more use case overlap, the MBP looks far less compelling.

Most iPads out there are NOT M1’s. Yet most of the top new features in ios16 are for M1 only. :(

iPadOS 16, Apple's operating system that runs on the iPad, is getting almost all of the great features coming to iOS 16, but there are also iPad-specific additions that make the iPad more Mac-like than ever. In our latest YouTube video, we show off the five best features coming to the iPad this fall.

  • Stage Manager - Stage Manager is a new multitasking interface that's also available on the Mac in macOS Ventura. Stage Manager supports multiple windows that are resizable, and it is a much different experience than the standard Split View. Your main app is front and center and others are right off to the left for easy access, plus you can group apps together and overlap windows for more control over your workspace. Stage Manager is unfortunately limited to the iPad models with an M1 chip.
  • External Display Support - iPadOS 16 brings full external display support to the iPad Pro with M1 chip, allowing that iPad to drive a display with up to 6K resolution. You can use a single external display with the M1 iPad Pro running iPadOS 16.
  • New Display Modes - For pros who need color accuracy, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro with Liquid Retina XDR display can provide reference color for popular color standards and video formats. The iPad Pro is able to serve as a secondary reference display for the Mac using Sidecar.
  • Weather app - The Weather app has finally come to the iPad, and it's pretty much identical to the iOS 16 Weather app. It can take advantage of the larger display of the iPad to provide more modules on one screen, and you can tap into any weather module to get additional information.
  • Freeform app - Later this year, Apple will launch a new Freeform app that's designed to be a collaborative canvas for working on projects with others. It supports real-time collaboration and can be used for brainstorming, outlining new projects, and more. Apple has really lost their way. Just Android copycats

They are. Stage Manager on the 11" Pro sucks. The screen becomes cluttered and the apps hanging out on the side of the screen are way too large, take up too much space and are visually distracting. I expect Apple to greatly simply that aspect first in the next beta update. It's not as bad when connected to an external monitor, but so far real world use falls way, way below what was promised in the keynote.
I second this. Stage manager is NOT for small screen. Yes, 11” is a small screen.

If ipad doesn’t lock itself when the case is closed, I don’t see it being a problem, unless apple changes something else.
