I used to use Handbrake, but this is far superior IMO.

Get the version from their website, rather than the App Store as it has more features.

Thanks so much for the explanation. I had no idea the latest VLC was needed. I always thought it was HB that had to be the latest, as VLC, to my knowledge, was just to play the conversion.

Well, I just checked VLC, I still have the latest version 1.1.12. Back to square one.....
