Was anyone of you able to install the update from Handbrake using the "check for updates" option?
When I click there I get a popup saying "install update" but when I click it, it says update error...

Irrelevancy, my friend. The sweet kiss of death. Making it 1.0 is pretty much the only way they could grab headlines at this point. This has been a great app that I've used for many years, but to be completely honest most people don't need to use something like this any more.

I don't know, it seems the greatest video converter out there to call it irrelevant. People still rip DVDs, not sure if it can rip Blurays.

Can't wait until 2029 for the 1.0.1 update!

More like in the next week or two. We've had releases every year, sometimes several, for over a decade now. That's not chaning. Ignore the crap clickbait titles the news sites comes up with. It's inaccurate and mis-leading. HandBrake wasn't even in beta.

There has been 11 major, non beta releases in the last 10

It's simply switching to a new versioning scheme.

It's open source, so what's 1.0 really mean anyways? It's not like there's some organization behind it that's guaranteeing support or stability or anything, is there?

Apple GUARANTEEING stability for their OS??!? They would be bankrupt if they did.

And their support?

"We are very sorry you are having problems with your new Mac. We can assure you that problems regarding unexpected reboots using Time Machine are completely unheard of internally. But it MIGHT get better with future updates... "

Apple guarantees and support my a**...

I've used handbrake ... I don't know how many times. Lots. Never realized it was a beta product all this time.

No one will ever beat GNU-Hurd's on-going record, 26+ years in beta and going strong!

Not hard for a super-niche product that very few people have ... heard ... of, let alone use. And, despite their claims of being under 'active development', from what I can glean from their change notes, the only changes to the source of the last couple of years have been adding new years to the copyright indicator.

To that end, I imagine there's thousands of multi-decade projects still in beta.

Not quite fair to compare that to something like Handbrake.

Handbrake is great, I use it almost every day and definitely not beta. I was just replying to the other user thinking 13 years was the longest ever beta :)

Handbreak has been my go-to, one of the iconic apps out there. The performance is great, especially because it parallel processes. A lot of video encoders for some reason don't parallel process, which is criminal on an 8-core machine.

There's still an organization behind it. Sure they won't be as likely to support it if they aren't taking money for it, but it's not like paid software often has a real guarantee of support.

Great product and has been a great tool when doing video stuff. Hope they continue to develop it. Now if they could just move into bluray..

It can do blu ray as well. It's just a matter of a plug-in. There's documentation in google for how.

Just search for: handbrake blu ray rip

And you'll find the tutorial on getting the plugin working here:

https://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/directly-rip-and-convert-bluray-disks-with-handbrake

After doing as instructed, you'll be able to directly rip blu ray discs with handbrake.

It works very well. And has been reliable for me.

For ripping protected dvds, you'll also want libdvdcss installed. View that discussion here:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/installing-libdvdcss-1-3-99.1861310/

I have both the libdvdcss and blu ray plug-in installed.

Everything works great. There's no reason why the power of handbrake can't be used to rip and convert any format.

I rip and convert various video formats and dvds and blu rays all the time with handbrake. It's my favorite tool.

Well just got a new Macbook today, I installed Handbrake, well tried to install the libdvdcss.2 file, well my computer won't allow it, can't move it, have a white "do not sign" on it... any way to do that???

There's a setting within handbrake for subtitles that only appear during certain foreign language parts i.e. Avatar, and they are called "Forced Subtitles" i.e. where they will appear even if you have subtitles turned off. There is actually an option to burn in Forced Subtitles, and Handbrake will automatically identify them and encode them into the output video.

That or you can download a sub-title .srt file online, The one for only the language needed to be translated is best or get with with the in my case English already included as well then edit it to remove the not wanted parts. You then load that .srt file in the sub-titles option tab with the burned-in option checked and when encoded you get the translation only when needed for the parts you wanted. That can be the only options sometimes to get it as not all disks include the only foreign subs. On and one hell of a program been using it so long I have no clue when I stated using it, always works as advertised..

Probably the system protection in your way. Try here:

Oh gosh. That's warped me right back to 2008ish when I started to rip my entire DVD collection. 2 iMacs and 1 Powerbook. It was a few days later I realised I could just download existing torrents and be done with it!

- Picture and Filters settings are now part of the main window
- Settings are preserved when selecting a new title (instead of reloading the last selected preset)

Loving these two updates in particular.

If you launch Apple's DVD Player, Features Menu > Subtitles, will sometimes tell you which subtitle track to use. Just remember in Handbrake, the subtitle track 0 is DVD Player's 1. Otherwise you may have to choose "Foreign Audio Search" in HB.

It seems that HandBrake is only known as a video converter. Actually it is also a DVD ripper. I have used HandBrake for several times to rip my daughter's cartoon DVDs on Mac. But I think it is a little bit difficult to use.

MakeMKV and handbrake are all most of us need for DVD and BluRay
And Subler for OCR'ing subtitles.. ^_^

No, Handbrake is NOT a ripper. It is in fact, only a video converter, as it is also known as.

You read and convert your daughters DVD's, you don't rip them.

Whatever the term is I wish someone here could assist with a simple guide on the best settings for bringing a dvd movie you own to your ipod classic and possibly an Iphone or Ipad in the future, one movie I tried had good quality, another had blips of small grey line streaks but I used the same settings, the Hollywood industry is lost, if there was a simple and quick way to play the movies I buy on multiple devices I would be buying more movies.
