i guess this would match content being shown/Airplayed to the AppleTV and perhaps helps get the AppleTV more use.

OK, I am kinda liking this idea more.
(not that it means anything for anyone else)

It looks real nice. I was a big stickler for 4:3, but after seeing this I think I can live with 16:9 quite comfortably.

I don't know if anybody else responded to you on this because I cannot easily search for responses to your comment, but the current iPad is 4:3 (which is great since 16:9 tablets are way too narrow in landscape mode). The current iPhone is 3:2 (not 4:3). When it was released it was essentially described as a "half-VGA" screen at 320x480 (i.e.: 2:3 instead of 4:3 since one dimension of VGA was halved). Since retina, the "point resolution" remains 320x480, but the pixel resolution was increased to 640x960 (still the same 2:3 or 3:2 aspect ratio). This move to 16:9 will seriously help with viewing videos on the iPhone.

All iPhone needs now is the iPad split keyboard to make typing easier in landscape mode. The landscape keyboard is a critical aspect of this new design. I want to know what Apple has done to solve the new width or if the new width would even be uncomfortable for typing.

Not at all. If one were a continuation of the other, they would have just migrated....but they didn't. When you upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion, are both operating systems running simulatneously? No, you upgrade from one to the other. They clearly setup an entirely new system (that originally did not have all the same features) and made users create an entirely different login. Trust, I'm an IT admin...these systems were not the same. One failed and the other took those lessons and created something entirely new based on that.
We'll agree to disagree. In my opinion, they changed MobileMe to iCloud and we're just arguing a technicality.

It's a bit taller. Revolutionary! Things will never be the same again.

Sorry, did I miss the part where ANYBODY said that taller was revolutionary, innovative, or super-duper tremendously awesome?

Nope?

Then I have to wonder regarding the source of your sarcasm. Hmmmmm....

If Tim gets on stage and presents it that way, then go crazy with sarcasm all you want. Until then, it kind of makes no sense. You're making fun of a statement nobody has made.

I find it that most people who complain about this screen don't grasp the reasoning for it. They would literally have to change everything to make it bigger in both directions or 720p. New icon sizes. All new app size it's way too much work for minimal extra gain.

No, sadly, it's not propaganda just because the paranoid can read something into it. (And, at the physical screen size rumored for the new iPhone, moving up to full 720p, or even 1080p, wouldn't provide a better viewing experience. The pixels in the display are already too small to resolve individually at a typical viewing distance.)

I personally think that my "It might get loud" 720p movie will look better on a 1280x720 306 ppi screen (current SG3) than on a 1136 x 640 330ppi screen (AFAIR specs of new iPhone).

Every pixel is defined and displayed as is - no resizing algorithm needed. So I personally think the afterward sentence "This will fit many widescreen movies more naturally." is quite a bogus statement.

Heck, a 320x180 screen also offers this aspect ratio but we won't need to argue that the picture will be crappy. Even though it is not letterboxed and therefore "looking more naturally".

Fact is that the iPhone screen has been dethroned - and therefore there is no need to hype that screen as something revolutionary new - which is what the article does in a way.

That's all I meant to say. But thanx for the nice discussion.

You won't be able to see the affects of downsampling on a 4" screen. It's a pointless argument.

I really hope this is disinfo with the iphone 4T (T = Tall).

But I think it is not. So I will hold on to the 4S for another year, and get the missus a S3 from the asian copyboys.

If this is the phone that will come out I am sure Tim Cook will burn in hell.

IN related news there's a new demo showing the difference between video playing through an ATV on a 42" screen and the same video playing on a 50" screen. Amazing stuff.

Bumpers weren't sold with the launch of the iphone4. they were only made available and then distributed AFTER apple was caught dead to rights with a serious design flaw that hit the media with people demanding a solution.

Apple first tried to hide claims that there was an antenna problem, And then tried to pass it off as "normal". Even so far as to accusing pretty much every other company of having antenna issues.

Only after people had enough did apple finally go "oh ok, oops, here's a free bumper to fix the problem"

Apple is one of the worst companies at admitting when they goof. The Apple mentality is that their own farts smell like roses.

and we all know, nobodies farts smell like roses.

I'm quite certain that the bumpers were sold with the intro of the iphone 4 and later made free when the antenna issues became widespread:

Today, as expected, Steve Jobs announced that Apple would offer free rubber "bumpers" to anyone who bought an iPhone 4 in order to fix the problem caused by the antenna's design flaw. However, Jobs did not promise a hardware fix which would alleviate the problem without marring the phone's aesthetic.

"We're not perfect," Jobs told reporters. "Phones aren't perfect either," adding, "but we want to make all of our users happy."

The free offer is available through Sept. 30, and a full refund will be issued to those who already bought the $29 case. The deal will appear on Apple's website "late next week," and if the supply of bumpers runs out, Apple will offer "a choice of cases," presumably all in the $29-or-less price range.

Going to have to verify this. But i'm pretty sure this feature still exists in ML. will check when i get home.

It's definitely not there, I've looked everywhere for the feature and it simply isn't present in the OS anymore.

Great video! All I care about is that the edges aren't 90 degree corners that cut into your hand; my 3G may be ancient and cracked but it still feels better in my hand than any iP4/4S because the rounded corners caress the palm of my hand.

Gosh. Now that is exciting. An extra 0.5". And larger app folder sizes. Double golly gosh. What a story.

For one your first statement about the bumpers not being sold at launch isn't true, I for one purchased one right then and there because a case wasn't available right then and there.

Second, they didn't go around accusing "pretty much every other company of having antenna issues" they took it as a graphic fail in the antenna strength indicator. Remember when those bars were a lot smaller?? And they rushed an update that made them look bigger? That was the first solution.

And third there wasn't an "oops here's a free bumper to fix the problem" they then started the "free case program" for anyone that had purchased and iPhone 4 and even made an app for you to choose your free case. Anyone remember how this went down?

Gosh, I hope this is wrong. Color me thoroughly unimpressed.

I've resisted a smartphone till now and am only waiting to see what the new iphone brings to the table before migrating. I hope the rumors are wrong and we don't just get a "4T" as someone else said. I want a "4XLT".

I am definitely going GSIII if this is the best they can bring.

Of course, I realize it's all speculation till 9/12 then we will know for sure. Come on Apple ... WOW me, please!

If only I could link back to my post August 3rd because I predicted this and while that's not worth anything it makes me happy :D

Oh, yes they did, they were quite openly adamant that the same sort of thing happened with handsets from other manufacturers.

The font will be tiny as hell because the screen hasn't changed.

If they must change screen size I'd rather they keep the font at the same size... the only advantage I see to a bigger screen is being able to fit more on it. If they just made the text bigger I'd far rather just have the smaller screen and have the phone be more portable.
