My wife has an Android Atrix. We are a completely Apple household. Laptops, iPhones, iPads, G4s, MacPro, iMac, etc. But when she needed to get a smartphone, she just wanted to be able to get some email and check a website or google maps when she needed. So, the Atrix was on sale for $119 at Costco and THAT's the whole reason she got it over a iPhone 4. That's it. Oh, and she curses that phone every day. 80 bucks wasn't worth it.

Did you make sure to remind her that's a really really unsmart decision that she made? I assume not, but, just checking. :D

Oh, yes they did, they were quite openly adamant that the same sort of thing happened with handsets from other manufacturers.

Insisting that other manufacturers aswell as themselves (when they admitted it) can tend to have reception issues on their handsets due to an oversight is one thing but calling it an accusation and that they all have is another and it just didn't happen. What did happen was an accusation that as sj put it was "we were holding it wrong" ;-)

... Try using 1138x640 and it's ALMOST perfect. About a quarter pixel off.

1.77777777777778 x 640 = 1137.77777777778 (roughly 1138 and only a quarter pixel off perfect)

1.77777777777778 / 1136 = 639 which is an ENTIRE pixel off perfect. 1138 is a MUCH better choice.

...

Here's why 1136 is MUCH better than 1138 :

1138 / 8 = 142.25
1138 / 16 = 71.125

1136 / 8 = 142
1136 / 16 = 71

If you know anything about binary and how CPUs or GPUs basically work you'll see that 1136 is an obvious choice over 1138.

I challenge you to find a (digital) screen that has a pixel width or height that is not a multiple of 8 or 16.

Computers love multiples of 8, 16, 32 etc. because how well they fit in binary number operations. Using 1138 would make no sense in terms of computing design.

Laptops, Games Consoles, Televisions, etc all have a standard resolution of 16:9. Movies are usually a minimum of 16:9 if not cinema scope.

16:9 seems like the correct resolution. I agree that it looks quite tall because they've not managed to reduce the size of the top and bottom borders. Width wise, I'm glad - the SIII looks great, all huge, but it's not that comfortable for one handed use.

ALL of those are ONLY used in landscape orientation.

Irrelevant!

1366 x 768 Most Popular Screen Resolution, Overtakes 1024 x 768

I find it that most people who complain about this screen don't grasp the reasoning for it. They would literally have to change everything to make it bigger in both directions or 720p. New icon sizes. All new app size it's way too much work for minimal extra gain.

You have it backwards. In order for them to keep the same aspect ratio they would have to extend the width as well, which they are not doing. They are changing the aspect ratio, and only extending vertically, which means yes, everything will have to be adjusted.

Since forever? What was the first iPhone catching up on? What was the Retina display in the iPhone 4 catching up on?

Yes my dear, catch up. For example, stop thinking about this Retina display for a sec and think. Are we now just about to get some kind of 4g in the phone? Other phones been there and already use 4g LTE.

I really don't care much for a retina screen on a 4 inch anything. It would be much better if Apple intro a 17 inch retina macbook pro than their fail with the 15 in macbook pro.

But back to the iPhone. As my first example the iPhone took its time to release simple features that other phones had such as the ability to copy and paste that only came out in iOS 3.0 when other phones before 2009 was capable of doing this.

So yes, I think the iPhone is still playing catch up to the other phones out based on features.

really? Does this matter?

The 5 mbps on 3G is enough for mapping and video streaming.
The 9mbps my coworkers get on 4S's 4G is more than enough for anything on a mobile device today and for awhile. Hell, its more than 119 of 311 million americans (more than a third!) have hard wired to their homes!

"the report itself found that 19 million Americans lack access to any sort of fixed broadband service, and that a further 100 million haven't subscribed to a broadband service even in areas where it is available."

No they don't. They keep the same retina PPI gain an extra row of icons on the home screen. app adjustments will be minimal they can either be left letter boxed or a small adjustment to have it fill the screen. to change the entire resoluton of the screen they would have to redo everything.

Have you ever been to DC, NYC, or San Francisco? No way in hell a 4S will get 9mbps in any of those places. I was lucky if I got 90kbps. Most of the time the data just didn't work despite having 4-5 bars everywhere. I know I'm not the only one who has similar issues. At the same time, all of my friends on Verizon's 3G and LTE have no issues whatsoever.

We imagined, however, that existing apps would be "letterboxed", simply leaving empty black space at the top and bottom of the larger screen.

Letterboxing is the the black bars at the top and bottom of the image.
Pillarboxing is the black bars at the left and right of the image as shown in your video.

Letterbox is used to show extra wide images in a narrower screen.
Pillarbox is used to show a smaller image on a wider screen.

If it is a let down is it really revolutionary?

The problem for Apple is more people will go to Android if Apple doesn't do something huge.

It's ironic if you think android is the innovative player in this market; what exactly is android innovating on? bigger screen size? lol.

Personally, I think windows phone 8 is the more innovative and refreshing one here.

Since forever? What was the first iPhone catching up on? What was the Retina display in the iPhone 4 catching up on?

Didn't the first iPhone not have MMS or 3G?

And the Super AMOLED display on the galaxy S series have colors that destroy iPhone's range. Infinite blacks FTW!

Let's not forget about notifications, 4g, A VARIETY of screen choices...

Right, they should make it a triangular screen, then Apple would become truly innovative again!

Translation without the snark: just because something has been around for a few years doesn't make it "outdated" and in need of a change.

Re-enable snark: I want my new car to have five and half wheels--this four-wheel thing has been around for a century or more--it's so outdated! ;)

Nice reply. I can see it was completely lost on the commenter to which it was addressed though. I suggest he's either trolling, or just missing a logic processor or two. See, when these guys say Apple isn't innovating anymore, what it really comes down to in the end is that they want a bigger, wider screen. Wider screen = innovation? I know, it's completely laughable, but there you have it.

I think the idea (or conspiracy theory?) is that Apple knew about the issue and produced the bumpers in advance to thwart the issue. Perhaps they were thinking if they talked enough people into buying bumpers the antenna issue wouldn't rear it's ugly head?

Again, not saying I believe that, but I think this is the point that was being made. Apple always has a purpose/intention behind change and that there is some bigger purpose or intention behind the screen size increase.

I'd like to hope there's something cool planned for it, like widgets or live tiles, instead of just making it bigger to go 16:9 for video consumption. :-/ But I'm willing to bet that's how Apple will sell it.

Widgets, live tiles and a 4'' screen? Considering Samsung has already made phones with these the price will be.....

1 BILLION DOLLa!

Oh, I see. So when other tablets DON'T have Retina display or Siri, they are behind.

No, he has a point and there hasn't been much to come out of Apple in a while that 'changes everything'. Especially when fascinating things are popping out of Android and Microsoft-ville.

What's wrong with wanting change?

Honestly my next phone very well might be.
----------
So Apple will just keep it the same small size forever as to not hurt app developers? Where is the innovation in that.
Nice to know that 2012 is "forever." It's also quite curious that you feel that the screen size is the only innovation in the next iPhone.

Instead of hanging your Android hopes and at MacRumors, why not visit http://www.androidguys.com/tag/android-rumors/ where your comments will be welcomed.

Nice video. Very Apple-esque style.
I agree.

But it's giant sized!
Way too big for one's pocket...
Don't you remember? Steve told you that small pocket is for the iPod nano.

Perhaps you missed my point. People are overusing the word 'innovation'. The other commenter talked about lack of innovation, but when pressed, it seemed that his biggest complaint was the screen not being wider. There is nothing wrong with wanting a wider screen, but it's laughable when people use the word 'innovation' in the same breath. I wouldn't even call it an improvement—more of a personal preference.
