I got the updated version and the issue with the fonts on the files names is fixed but it appears something happened to the aspect ratio of my MP4 video files. It seems to be stretching the video

Update

Although version 1.0.1 was released yesterday after 4 days of being reviewed by Apple, It was already old by the time it was released; I've been working hard with the help of many users these past three days, and I have already submitted a v1.1 that should fix and add the following:

- Improved forward / rewind: now it will be more natural, using swipe right /left to move 30s
- Improved compatibility with NAS SMB: I have rewritten the code for SMB servers, and thanks to the help of many users here, it works even with external HDD connected to Apple Capsules, etc.
- Compatibility with built-in subtitles and built-in audio channels.
- Some fixes and minor corrections.

Thanks for your patience, and thanks for those 4000+ downloads so far :)
Please feel free to send me your feedback by email dev@abril.me

I updated the app today and I'm sorry to say that it's getting pretty terrible.

It now fails to play most files thus rendering it almost useless

The rewind and fast forward are bad

It tries to remember playback position but because of that there is no way to start the show from the beginning. You have to rewind all the way back which is a painful experience.

Sorry to hear that. Are you using Plex or NAS/SMB Servers?

How do you update the app manually? Is there a reason that all of my files are having the audio down mixed to 2.0? It's happening on both DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1

NAS/SMB. I just tried using another NAS player in the store called NAStify and it played the files yours would not. I can send you one of the files for testing if you would like. The error I get is "unable to open file".

Yea I'm getting the same error too while using an apple Time capsule with SMB, let's hope version 1.1 solves this issue

I'll look into it

I'm sure the next update, 1.1, will allow you to play those file. It's already 'In review' by Apple, and also 'In review' for TestFlight. If you send me an email to the address listed under 'About' section of the App, I'll send you an invite as soon as I get it approved for beta testing.

Nice app, but please support PL store too.

Thanks!

I hate to be that person that repeats themselves in every thread (sorry).

It was mentioned that it will read from HDs 'connected' to Time Capsule, but will it read directly from the Time Capsule itself?

I sold my ATV2 and bought a Time Capsule with the hopes an app for the ATV4 would allow this.

Thx

Hi!

To be honest, I have no Time Capsule to make tests, so can't give you an answer; However, as long as the time capsule has the feature to share files and be discovered by other pcs/macs on LAN, and not only to make backups, it will be discoverable by Video Explorer. Let's see if somebody with a TimeCapsule can give you a better answer...And Sorry!!

Thanks for your reply.

Hopefully someone will test this.

Hi guys,

Update 1.1 has just been released:

-Improved NAS support
-FF/RW with a swipe gesture
-Built-in subs & audio

Latest version has appeared on my ATV - still not outputting surround sound for me, no matter what setting I choose in 'audio settings' - auto or Dolby Digital I am still only getting 2.0 from any file I playback. I've tried DTS and DD5.1 and they both are exactly the same.

It might be an idea to implement a 'jump to a time' settings, as it's very long-winded if you have to stop a film, to get back to the point you stopped at, as jumping 30 seconds a time, via fast forward takes a long, long time, unless I'm doing something wrong with the controller.

That aside, it works very well on my set-up so thank you.

Thanks! I'm also thinking of a similar feature to "jump to a time", it will be useful indeed!
As for the channels, may be related to the lack of license of DTS DD5.1? If I recall right, I had to add some restrictions to avoid certain audio codecs to be fully available, like AC3 for example, due tu license issues. I'll check it out though!

Hi
I have a time capsule and the previous versions of video explorer didn't work for me, but since I updated to version 1.1 it reads and plays video off my time capsule with SMB protocol. I can confirm it works perfectly

Is there a way to do bitstreaming for DTS and DD ?

Oh login + passwd is working for me now, so for SMB shares (QNAP). Still what annoys me is that the password entry is made impossible by an incorrect display of the keyboard and entry box. Only happens after you enter the login name. Back and try again solves it. Are you using a standard UI element. Already complained to Apple as well. I'm sure its not my TV.

Also if you play a movie and press back, you can see that you attempt to download the whole or part of the file. Could you cancel this sooner ?

Also noticed when you select a folder with many files, the folder is first parsed then opened. You might consider to start to pretent to open that folder first and show e.g. the first visible files and parse in the background. When someone starts scrolling down you just continue to show what has been found.

Could you also consider sort options ?

Another request use smaller font so more files are visible and add columns like date added, size

Image quality looks ok. Are you using built-in codecs ? Think its called VideoToolbox in iOS... Or stuff from VLC ?

Directory listing needs to be fixed to be natural listings.

ie... if it has a . or a + as the first character it should be on top of the list

It was like this in 1.0 but it has changed.

Found another bug. After the ATV has entered sleep mode and wakes up again, the app when started again does not find NAS drives. UPNP works. You have to kill the app and start again, then it's ok.

That's great news thanks!!!

Did you change any settings?

I'll be getting it as soon as I get home, can't wait!!!

Nah, didn't change settings, of course I had to enter login details to access the time capsule, but the app saves the login info so you don't have to re-enter it all the time.

I just browse through the folders and select the video I want and it plays

IT WORKS!!!!

For anyone interested in playing directly from a Time Capsule this works.

No tweaking or workaround necessary. No need to install a server on your computer and have it running.

I would gladly name my 1st born Sergio!!!

Muchas gracias (assuming you speak Spanish), I can now justify the ATV4 to my wife.

I bought but requested a refund...no 5.1 no go.

I have a file with both 2.0 and 5.1 (2.0 is primary) it will not play the 5.1 audio.

Fix that and I'll gladly buy again! As now I'd AirPlay no my iPhone with the buffalo nas app...

Thank you guys for all your feedback and messages!
I'm already working on improving the folder listing and bugs like not finding NAS after sleep.

As for 5.1, Sadly, it's not a bug but a restriction; If I'm not wrong, in order to use DTS/AC3/DD5.1 I have to apply and pay for a license to Dolby... I'm thinking of doing it, but it's not cheap! Sorry about that...

Don't hesitate to send me more petitions and feedback :)
