Based on the above drawings, this would be a disaster.

The interface is now clunky, crowded and unintuitive.
Biggest problem- take a look-it will require two hands to operate, thereby negating what every one else has been trying to imitate-the ease of use of the iPod scroll wheel.

Oh please... 🙄 This is a stupid drawing, the iPod is not gonna look like this. The Apple engineers know what they are doing.

That's quite exciting. From the Appleinsider article i linked to a few posts back the ambient light sensor intrigued me. I'll have to wait until i see the actual thing of course because of the vague qualities of patent sketches, but the different screen functionality looks neat and the "now playing" screen's different changing factors at the bottom is a nifty concept. We'll see what happens...

We would have to compare the current ipod with it's patent sketches to know how different it can be

It seems more PDA-ish to me. I feel like this patent is just for the music interface to the PDA... I hope so because I need a PDA and iPod.

Come on Apple... Don't make me wait.

A case for that thing is going to be very hard to make with the sides being touch sensitive and all (at least a slim case) so I really hope apple gets their act together in the area of scratch-resistance. At any rate, looks like the perfect device- if it's comes with web functionally I'd be in love. This is going to send product zune back to the drawing board- and when Microsoft is at the drawing board, decades pass 😀

...What's the point of a hold button if it isn't physical anyway??
It could be a button such as the locking method on the 1gen shuffle...hold the play/pause button for 5 seconds or so...see the flashing led...locked. (I really don't like that lock method, but it is what it is).

edit=spelling

Am I the only person around here who doesn't see an issue with scratches on this (or for that matter the current iPods)?

I know the plastic scratches, but does that honestly affect your use or viewing at all? The few scratches that are on my 5.5G iPod (and before that, my nano) have absolutely no effect on my viewing of the display whatsoever? If the backlight is off, or you hold it at a weird angle maybe, but otherwise who cares? Why do phones and iPods and other handhelds always have to look shiny new?

I personally scuff up my sneakers and jeans as soon as I buy them. Same idea here... I kinda like when stuff is broken in. Feels better to me. If it affected viewing in some way I would understand, but it really doesn't?

I notice that the fingers in the diagram look small. A little research shows the average male index finger dip joint (last joint at the finger) is about 1cm long. Doing some quick calculations, assuming ANYTHING in the diagram is to scale, the device seems to be about 7" tall. The current Ipod is 4.1" tall. Also, the diagram shows the ability to add to playlist, which leads me to believe it is more than an ipod... perhaps I am completely wrong, of course

that reminds me.... does anyone remember when Jobs was previewing GarageBand PodCast maker? His Super Secret Apple Rumors?

“Hi, I’m Steve and welcome to my weekly podcast, Super-secret Apple Rumors. I have some pretty good sources inside Apple, and the next iPod is going to be HUGE, like 8 pounds … See you next week.”

Well... He's probably talking about something else.

Instead of 10,000 songs in your pocket it'll be 8 lbs in your pocket. Not too fun.

On first glance so much for one handed navigation. I hope there is more to it then this. 🙁

How about we reserve our comments on usability, interface and one-handed-ness until we see a demo... or a freaking production model for that matter.

sheesh. You all talk like you've used it.

Decoy

This has got to be a decoy patent. Because if it's not:

(1) How do you design a case to protect it while exposing the bezel 360 degrees around so you can touch it? No coverage in front? Actually, a case couldn't even have a lip to hold it on because your finger would have to get in there to press upon the bezel.

(2) How do you realistically even pick it up or move it if pushing the bezel on nearly any side activates these programmed dynamic buttons? You'd have to Lock it every time you want to touch the thing so you don't activate some function.

This would be a terrible form-does-not-follow-function idea.

Right. Someone finds a patent filing, which only has to describe the patent with sufficient detail to gain acceptance, and many folk are conjecturing the final product. For general discussion that is great, and a reason to interact on forums like this one. However, I cringe when I read people's visceral response to something that does not even exist yet.

I can scrape my PDA (Dell Axim) up and down my carpet with no visible scratching.

let me guess "just for ***** and giggles"! 🙂

i can honestly see this as apple covering all their bases with a patent for any 'good idea' that has been discovered. as we are well aware, apple rules the roost in the digital audio player market, and i can see this as a way to protect such a valuable asset to the company.

i expect it to have no physical buttons, and use some of the mentioned technology, but in an even more intuative way!

I disagree completely, scratches interfere with almost every aspect of the ipod's screen. They make the overall viewing very unpleasant, especially if left with no case for very long periods of time. Some ipods become almost illegible because of the high amount of scratches, as a result I think cases are totally necessary.

May I ask what you expect on an Apple-based rumor site such as MacRumors? Speculation is the foundation for any site based on rumors, so speculation on the part of its readers is frowned upon? I don't see the logic in that.

This is just another one of apples patent's that they own so if someone wants to use it, they have to pay 😉

Your comments don't take into account that Apple is also going to design in the ultimate intuitive interface. The device will KNOW what you mean for it to do when you touch it. It will intuit just like a thermos KNOWS whether to keep the hot things hot and the cold things cold and is ultimately simple.

;-)

Can't wait for this marvel

I really can't wait for this marvel.
It is quite nice the hear the coming features. However I find that it kinda kills a little bit the wow effect and the Apple culture when people always try to find out what the next apple's products look like.

Ok for those concerned about picking up such a device and pressing 18 buttons by accident DO NOT FEAR.

If you read closely in the appleinsider article it explains that the device can detect if it's being held or pressed as if it were being touched as a button by measuring the length of time of contact.

Could it be that Apple is going to release this new video iPod after Zune so it can steal MS's thunder?....

What do you guys think?

I've been thinking this all along. However, the rumors don't seem to support a near release. But except for the price change, the Sept. iPod releases were not very revolutionary. Release this and watch what happens at holiday time. 😀

true, That's what I am expecting to happen.
They lowered the iPod prices and that opened room for the hi-end Video ipod priced at $400 or $500.
So it might happen. The big question is if they are ready for this on the holiday season or later maybe at MWSF. We'll find out in 2 to 3 weeks if they do not announce it a week or so before Thanksgiving.

Speculation is fine. It's the people saying, "teh UI gonna sux. im not buy 1," and whatever else. I should've suggested not jumping to conclusions. Of course I have reservations about the possible product... but I'm not willing to just jump off the wagon and say, "I'm not buying one."

There was a post earlier that suggested it was just a marketing hold-up. This could very well be a production hang up. They don't want to announce it until they have 5 million of them stamped out and in containers in a warehouse in LA.

If they get them produced by some deadline(Late November most likely) then announce either just before black friday or then. Otherwise push back to Jan
