I can't seem to find a video playing app with one basic feature: to play videos from a network share?!

Is there a special reason for this or I'm not seeing something obvious?

It's one of the basic "use cases" I had when buying iPad, and now I can't get it to work!? So, the movies are on a network drive, and I just want to browse them from iPad, and click Play. Like I do from a Mac.

Tried with the VLC app, and AVPlayerHD, and I don't see this feature in any of those, although it's the first task I'd expect to be able to accomplish in these apps. :(

Great paid versions are Infuse (9.99 dollar), nPlayer (8.99 dollar). I have used nPlayer in the past but my favorite now for NAS video accessing is Infuse because of the automatic metadata downloads and great Chromecast support.
nPlayer has also support for audio files though which Infuse lacks.

Two great free options (with a limited set of options and support) are nPlayer free and VidOn.

The free version of Infuse also plays videos on network shares. I use it a lot for exactly that.

According to iTunes, included in the paid version is:

    - Play even more video formats
    - Enjoy Dolby® Digital Plus (AC3/E-AC3), DTS® and DTS-HD® mobile surround sound
    - Stream a wide variety of video types over AirPlay and Google Cast
    - 2-way trakt sync of watched history and playback progress
    - Play videos in background, or while device is locked

I play movies over wifi from a RavPower Filehub sdcard reader. They have their own app, basic but it works:
