In this era of "green" why is a technology that is really inefficient being embraced? Are we really that lazy? I wonder how many of the people that are clamoring for ending the use of fossil fuels embrace wireless charging?

People will always go with what's easier or what they want unless something really interferes with that preferred selection. Talking energy or CO2...just look at all the massive SUV's being bought in the U.S. (all 3 of the U.S. auto mfrs stopped making smaller Corolla size vehicles a few years back because of this) even though this means the buyer's auto fuel bills will go up noticably compared to a car.

The SUV thing is a what the consumer wants choice whereas the wireless charger is a bit of both what they want and what's easier to use.

or, maybe the companies who advertise wireless charging should be pressured to find ways to make it more efficient?
The customer shouldn’t have to think twice about anything like that, it should be on the companies who actually produce these products.
MagSafe is a good step forward.
Yes and at least it's not as bad when you are connected to a near constant flow of power. Wireless charging cases are abysmal. You only get like a third of the advertised mAh. I think I got one of my Pro Maxes from 0-30% and the case was kaput

I think there is more loss to the earth via cable production.

While I love the insight/backstory of seeing things like this, isn't this basically showing off prototypes stolen from Apple? I can't imagine that Apple officially sold this or gave it away.

Apparently found it at a Chinese recycler….

MagSafe on the iPhone should be similar to the connector on a laptop. Hold wired contacts to the device with the help of a magnet instead of wasting energy using this inefficient technology.
Yep - Apple already had a good solution for charging with the original MagSafe and could have incorporated something similar on all their iPhones, iPads, etc.

If we want to truly be green, we need right-to-repair and ending planned obsolescence. The first R in the three Rs of recycling is reuse if I remember correctly.

Anyhow the big reason I use wireless charging is just lower the wear and tear on my lighting port. Unfortunately I don’t have AppleCare anymore on my phone.

Why didn’t they just have three charging coils for three products, each separated by a hinge like MagSafe Duo?

The over-engineering is quite astonishing to be honest, because the multiple coil design is only solving a minor inconvenience - that being a user can lay their products off centre from where they would expect the coils to be. But if the mat had physical markings to separate the charge areas, there would be no need to randomly lay them anywhere.

What’s more, what were the chances that you were going to charge all three at the same time on a regular basis?

Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised. I mean, they gave us a Pencil that charged from the bottom of an iPad and a mouse with a port on the bottom so…

I've got a cheap wireless charger from Ikea. Works great, keep it at my work desk, perfect for topping the batteries of my two phones up during the work day.

I can't fathom paying more than say, $30 for a charger. They were right to can this thing. MagSafe obviously won out anyway.

(As an aside, Luke Miani had a video on this same subject launch 25 minutes after this video. Crazy coincidence. Luke was able to get his prototype to charge AirPods, and even a phone, albeit for only a millisecond and only on one specific coil.).

It's not over-engineering if the stated goal is to set down your products in any orientation, turns out that's really hard to do and MagSafe gets mostly there far more easily. Compared to my wireless charger on my nightstand that requires some finicking to make sure it's actually charging, this would've been a welcome improvement.
