Why didn’t they just have three charging coils for three products, each separated by a hinge like MagSafe Duo?

The over-engineering is quite astonishing to be honest, because the multiple coil design is only solving a minor inconvenience - that being a user can lay their products off centre from where they would expect the coils to be. But if the mat had physical markings to separate the charge areas, there would be no need to randomly lay them anywhere.

What’s more, what were the chances that you were going to charge all three at the same time on a regular basis?

Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised. I mean, they gave us a Pencil that charged from the bottom of an iPad and a mouse with a port on the bottom so…
I had just assumed that when this device was announced it was intelligent enough (via feedback) to determine where the phone was placed so it would only energize the coils in the array directly aligned with the coil in the phone and keep all the others off.
