Just wish they would have a Silver + Black bezels option.
They’ll save the black bezels for a future iMac Pro. I don’t mind the white bezels. I’d like an option for white bezels on a silver pro model.

Those pro prices will be crazy, though, because a 32 GB RAM, 2 TB, 24” model costs nearly €3,400 here. That’s $3,500

I recently got an i9 iMac octo with 128 GB RAM, 4 TB, 27” machine for €2,000. Used machine in perfect condition from a reputable reseller. Much better choice for me. And the USB-A work perfect with my existing huge external content drives.

Good video. iMac is a very good computer. Love my M1 iMac. Happy to see that beautiful colours are still available even though the colours are slightly muted compared to M1/M3 models.

As the owner of an M1 Pro MBP, this pleases me.
As the former owner of an M1 mini, now an M4 mini, the difference is very obvious. However, it is more difficult to be sure which factors are most significant. My M1 MBP seems to lie in-between.

I suspect quite a bit is down to the M1 mini having had just 8GB.

On the M4 mini, things like exporting significant Pages documents to PDF are almost indistinguishable from a Save as both are so fast.

No intention whatsoever of updating my M1 MBP.

I wouldn’t say the M4 is a huge upgrade from the M1, since it’s the same design and the M1 is still a very good chip.

I could definitely see it for the Intel iMacs, at least the smaller ones.

If I had an M1 iMac, I’d wait for the rumored 90Hz M5 iMac. First display upgrade for this new generation.
definitely - for casual users (and that is the 24 iMac demographic) it is all the same

I can tell a difference between my M1 mini and my M1 Pro. But neither are struggling in any way.

Apple made the M series too good.

I’m very reluctant to buy an iMac until they can be configured as standalone monitors. There are so many used iMacs out there with terrific screens but outdated CPU’s.
Apple talks “green policies” but this literally proves they dont give a damn!

The older iMacs did let you use them as secondary monitors, but they ditched that feature. I still have an old one I use as my second screen.
Wait a minute, it seems I missed some episodes here. I have a 2019 iMac with 27" 5K display. You mean that I cannot use it as monitor attached to a M4 Mac mini for example?

Wake me up when:

120mhz
AV1 hardware encode
(and maybe a larger screen)

Pastel shades can take a hike, as well.

Right. The technology that enabled that was called Target Display Mode, and went out many years ago with the advent of the 5K iMacs, IIRC. https://support.apple.com/en-us/105126

You can find threads discussing do-it-yourself 'operations' on 5K iMacs to turn them into functional displays, which look rather involved and well beyond anything I'd attempt.

"It can be used for simple tasks like web browsing and watching videos."

OMG no way, I'm getting two immediately. I can't believe they have figured that out at apple.

This nonsensical baseline standard of what you can do with the computer needs to be updated desperately. And it's just that stupid as apples still used metric of can play a video for 15 hours or so.

If you can do the same damn thing with your phone, then why does a dedicated piece of hardware that sits on a desk need to be measured by the same stick?

Other than that it's just pure laziness when assessing a computer even when you're being lazy.

What a crock

"The products suck. There's no sex in them anymore!" - Steve Jobs when he returned to Apple.

This iMac design reminds me of this quote every time I see one. They couldn't look more generic unless viewed from behind. How many people have an office setup that allows for this?

I was at a Tesla showroom (I would never buy one) and saw that all their iMacs are the previous silver and black design. Gorgeous. I don't think this is because Telsa can't afford to upgrade.
I disagree. I think they’re probably the most interesting computer out there for a professional setting like reception.

For your Tesla example the red would look incredible in their stark showrooms.

Of course, this doesn’t mean they shouldn’t also offer silver and black models, they absolutely should.

Not to beat a dead hours, but shame that will all the variations they couldn't offer at least one option (Silver) with black bezels/keyboard/mouse etc.

Also important to emphasize that the $1499 versions not only gives you the extra ports, but I think to some even more importantly gives you a TouchID keyboard.

Making these available in Silver, Space Gray and Space Black with black bezels would improve the looks of these significantly. It's crazy that Apple hasn't thought of this. This design with the pastel colors just doesn't do it for a lot of people. Also I hope at some point they include ProMotion in the displays as people looking for a premium desktop are getting bored of 60Hz.

Where is the largest iMac? I’m waiting for it.
I would only be interested, if they make it usable as a Monitor (over Thunderbolt5 with full resolution + frequency) -
the experience with my 2014 5K iMac is still painful

Yes, I think it’s very wasteful. What’s more, I don’t think it’s best for their business, because they’re passing up an opportunity to sell iMac owners a new Mac Mini 3-4 years after purchase.

I have no idea how many buyers are like me, who could be persuaded to buy an iMac if it could be used as a standalone display, but I can’t be the only person who passes on a $2,500 iMac because the whole thing becomes junk once the CPU is too slow.

Ouch. I guess I will keep this machine for as long as Apple provides security updates. It is still so powerful for everything I do and compatible with older software. Now it runs macOS Sequoia but it seems this will be the last major macOS update for this iMac. :(

I'll be doing this as a "for fun project" whenever I have the time - could take some years though

you can't (at least not with 5K)

I'm on a 2017 27" 5K iMac right now, with an M4Pro Mac Mini on order and a 27" 4K Dell monitor on my desk waiting for it. Yes, I'd like to've used the iMac's display!

While I think the bottom line for most people switching to a different Mac basically gets down to 'toss the iMac' (or sell it), if you really want to dig into it, there are options.

There's at least one hardware kit and there are instructions on how to buy the kit, open the iMac up and do things comprehensible to more technically inclined people than I to make it work. An involved task. Here's someone's explanation of doing it:

https://ohmypizza.com/2023/04/converting-a-5k-imac-into-an-external-5k-display

There's a product called Luna Display, and it comes in various forms. One has a direct Thunderbolt connection. Bottom line, I wasn't won over from reading about it. Pay attention to refresh rate when you look at some of these options. Here's a page with somebody talking about using Luna Display.

It makes for interesting reading, but I think the conclusion you'll eventually reach is that you'll plan to get a new monitor with your next system.

Very interesting, thank you. I would not follow the first approach due to the complexity of the task (it needs tools and material that I have to buy, and of course time) and the risk of breaking the display.

The Luna Display seems a much safer option. They ship internationally but even with customs and taxes, it is going to be much cheaper than a new quality display. Plus, you keep the iMac to use it from time to time as in the past, if/when needed. My only worry would be a possible lag. Also, the new Mac which will use the iMac as monitor needs a display to install the software. It is obviously straightforward for Macbooks but I am thinking about Mac mini here as primary Mac.

The fly in the ointment is that you can buy a second hand iMac Pro for £900 now.
The M chips really pushed down the price of Intels, but a £5000 powerhouse machine down to nine hundred is nuts.
