Apple on Friday released the new iPhone 14 models, and MacRumors videographer Dan picked one up on launch day. He's been using the iPhone 14 Pro Max non-stop since it came out, and over on the MacRumors YouTube channel, has shared his initial thoughts on the day-to-day experience with the latest iPhone.

Dan's mini review highlights his issues with setting up the eSIM, the usefulness of the always-on display, the functionality of the Dynamic Island, how the new 48-megapixel camera fares, and more. Make sure to watch the video, and stay tuned to the MacRumors website and the MacRumors YouTube channel because we have more in-depth iPhone 14 video content coming, plus Apple Watch Ultra and AirPods 2 coverage.

That’s weird. My microphone dot is in the middle of the dynamic island and has been since Friday. 🤔

It moves based on what app you’re using - on a phone call the microphone will move to the right side.

How did you get that info? :)

I picked up my 14 PM from a local Apple store around 5:30 PM on Saturday(9/17). I then went ahead to migrate my Visible cell service from a 7 Plus to the 14. The actual process took about 5 minutes!

It took longer to download and install iOS 16.01, lol! Many people were doing it, I guess.

I read a lot of threads at Visible forum and here, so I knew what to expect. But it turned out to be a super smooth experience!

I like Visible because:

1. It is cheap. On the legacy Unlimited plan, I paid $25 a month with Party Pay for unlimited voice, text and hot spot. With the new Plus plan, I pay $45/mo for the same unlimited perks and more: 500 minutes every month to any of 120 countries and unlimited texts to 200 countries.

2. Good speed. With the legacy Unlimited plan, the speed on the phone and the tethered laptop was about 2 mbps. But for some odd reason, I was still able to watch a lot of YouTube videos at 480 P and even 720 P. With the $45/mo plan, the speed is faster. It ranges from 10 to 800 mbps, depending on location and time of the day.

So I’m a completely satisfied customer at Visible! :)

I’m in a suburb of Los Angeles.
Where did I get it? I lived it ...

My thought, exactly. I love the eSim. In some countries, I can just hop onto the wifi network on my airplane at 40,000 ft and activate the new sim even before I arrive.
I really don't understand the frustration...

And here are the list of carrier that support eSim in the US ... All of them can easily issue a new eSIM and activate the sim card easily... what's the problem guys?

  • Appalachian Wireless
  • AT&T
  • Boost Mobile
  • Carolina West Wireless
  • Cellcom
  • ...
I fully support it but let's not pretend there aren't going to be grown pains the first year or two.

The only people having problems, are the ones with cheap third party networks, also even if you have to put in a call (which I've had to do on occasions with a physical card) it's hardly an issue!
At the Apple Store I was at, literally every single person was at the table trying to talk to their carrier and talk to Tier 2 support and was having problems transferring their eSim over. Most were on Verizon, T-Mobile, I was trying to even help them, not cheap third party networks...

Again, I had ZERO issues and spent no time at all switching to an eSim from my old iPhone to the new iPhone. People are having problems, maybe you and I aren't, but people are (mostly the Carrier's fault.)

Don't like the color? Put a case on it!
DOn't like that it rocks when on a table? Put a case on it!
Why would you pay $1000+ for a phone and not put a case on it?
Fashion? Ok, its a free country :)

I just checked that, and all my apps that use microphone. It’s in the middle. I’d share a screenshot but the dot doesn’t show up.

Edit: My bad, I’m using 14 pro not 14 pro max. I missed that detail.

Dan, thank you for your iPhone 14 Pro Max Review. I agree the top end line of iPhone products have been consistently boring and underwhelming. I have an iPhone 8 Plus and see no need to buy the iPhone 14 Pro Max. I like the iPhone 14 Pro Max new features and battery life, but I find placing the microphone dot which is crucial to see for privacy is annoying. Further, why pay $1,600 for the iPhone 14 Pro Max when they do not even have a color I like. I will invest my $1,600 elsewhere and wait until the Spring 2023 to see if Apple can meet my expectations. Thank you.
To each their own. Bought my wife the pro max purple and will be getting myself a purple pro max. I don't disagree phones are boring but the pro max does what it does very well - and to me that's worth upgrading.

Dan, thank you for your iPhone 14 Pro Max Review. I have an iPhone 8 Plus and see no need to buy the iPhone 14 Pro Max. I like the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s new features and battery life, but placing the microphone dot in a virtually invisible space on the front screen is annoying when viewing the dot is crucial for privacy. Further, I agree the top of the line iPhone products colors have been consistently boring and underwhelming. Why pay $1,600 for the iPhone 14 Pro Max with maximum storage when they do not even have a color I like. Would it reduce Apple’s profits margins to have color choices of bright red and bright yellow? When I am paying for an iPhone equivalent to a partial house payment, a partial tax payment or a partial car payment, why would I purchase an iPhone not meeting my minimal expectations. I will invest my $1,600 elsewhere and wait until the Spring/Summer 2023 to see if Apple can meet my reasonable expectations. Thank you.
