Such a shame...
It would have been a killer device, at the price of the 9th gen, or maybe just a little more (25$?) to justify the refresh in design.
As ab artist I follow said...
"Until series 9 I suggested the base iPad as your first tool for digital art if you were a beginner...now not so much".
At least if only the screen was laminated...

Fascinating comments and reactions here from some. It's so important to evaluate a product on its own merits rather than allowing your opinion to be influenced by the perceived direction of the company making it and their business decisions. I have no interest in how or why Apple arrived at releasing the 10th Gen iPad but I do know I won't be buying it or recommending friends and family to buy it.

I have one or two customers who went for the 10, regardless of cost, over the 9 primarily because of the form factor. They much preferred the squared edges of the new design over the familiar rounded edges of the 9 simply because they found it easier to grip and hold onto. They were also not bothered by the loss of the home button because they already were familiar with a more recent iPhone.

Thanks for the clear explanation of the differences. If I were in the market for an iPad, oddly enough this would likely be the one for me. But I have a really old one that still works fine for my purposes.
One nice thing with this one is that it's been tested by Notebookcheck and verified to have no PWM or temporal dithering. That is an attractive part of this one for me- I really want the Air 5th gen, it is proven to have no PWM but there is no word on whether it has temporal dithering or not.

I ordered an Air 5 this weekend for $499, and can get a 10th gen ipad for $399 today on sale. Not quite sure what to do- the Air is superior in every way, but if it possibly is easier on the eyes, then it would still be a good device as it has pretty decent specs, and at least is about $100 cheaper than the air, at least by today's sale prices.

You are talking about bargain hunting and special deals though, not the retail price. I'm sure similar bargains would have appeared for the 10th gen had it not just been released two weeks ago.

Unfortunate timing on the release, or maybe very fortunate as the bargain basement Airs will be snapped up pretty fast leaving many folk with fewer choices.

Without a doubt:

The Air 4, IS a better deal, IF you can get one at that price while stocks last.
The Air 5 is a steal as well @ $519 - IF you can get one for that price and if budget permits.

I'd be surprised if the 10th gen goes down to $399 in a couple of months anyhow.

Great predictions you made! :) The Air 5th gen came down to $499 on Black Friday, and today the 10th Gen iPad is $399 on a couple of sites.
