It’s just an engineering trade off, and you pick which is more important: camera position or pencil support. Me, I picked screen size and got a 12.9” pro. But seriously, if you get this dramatic over small potatoes like this, how do you scale up to things that are actually important? a lot of people have pointed out correctly how few people actually use a pencil even if they bought one. For the vast majority, this is a nonissue. If it’s a biggie for you, pick an iPad you like. You act as though there’s only one choice.
I think the issue for a lot of us is that it’s a design compromise. How irritating to put something out that runs a generation one device with such a solution for charging. Oh and then have a delay in selling the adapter.

If they released it at the same price as the 9th gen then NO one would complain as it is clearly in some ways better than the 9th gen but it is just not worth the extra cost and I bet a lot of students or schools will miss the earphone jack a lot.
Yes, they would. There is literally nothing Apple could do that someone wouldn’t complain about. :)

Well true, they did lose earphone jack so I am sure there would be complaints there and the Apple pencil but my point is these things would be a lot more forgivable at a lower price.

“and it isn't clear why Apple didn't just add ‌Apple Pencil‌ 2 compatibility.”

Come on, guys. macrumors said this when this iPad was first released. Why are you still saying it? It’s obvious why. furthermore, we’ve known for a long time, because it’s the answer to why Apple hasn’t move the camera on the pro iPads. there’s a lot inside the iPad other than just a couple of magnets, where the pencil 2 attaches. There’s the wireless charging. If Apple can’t make it all fit, they can’t make it all fit. Complain about that if you want, but stop saying “it’s not clear” as if there aren’t iPad teardowns available.
Finally someone mentioning this! Sure there's a marketing aspect to it too, but people forget that moving the camera to landscape probably left no space for the pencil 2's charging magnets and coils. The same reason the MacBook doesn't have face id; there is no space for the module.

So you are this bothered by something you have zero interest in?
I would consider getting a baseline iPad at a cost similar to the 9th gen. I am interested in a cheap, decent iPad. But with these options I feel I'd much rather get something used or refurbished if I ended up with one.

I still don't love iPads exactly, but they have their uses. I've just decided their uses fit better as a cheaper, side device rather than a main device. I've never bought a new iPad I didn't regret or return after realizing a macbook is just nicer generally. The main thing I would like to have an iPad for is to draw, and Apple even managed to ruin what should have been the updated drawing experience, by not only making you use the old Apple pencil, but now with a dongle if you want to charge directly from the iPad. Like ****... Apple, really? And also, why and how?

My biggest issue with the new iPad is that for the price, why didn’t they include an A15? Having such an old SoC is not going to age well.

You say it like you wouldn't be whinging your face off if it still used the original method of charging, sticking out of the bottom like a lollipop. Don't make me laugh. You're here to complain, not to weigh up the pros and cons of buying this or any other iPad.

Because, regardless of putting the price up, it's still the base iPad. It's also still an upgrade. Actually a big upgrade all round. When the 9th get stops being available, this will be the lowest priced version. They always put older but perfectly good tech in base iPads. Again, that the price has gone up and you or whomever doesn't like it, is irrelevant to this.

Buy a used iPad Air 4. If you're patient you can probably find one with a Pencil and maybe even a case; you'll get those accessories used for probably 50% of new price.

Easy peasy and no reason to be so bothered by the new iPad you have no interest in even if it used the Pencil2.

Great review. Honest opinion and hits all the points that need to be made.

It is unfortunate about the pricing. Since you can get an iPad Air base model for $519 right now on Amazon that is $69 difference. You get a lot for that difference. A laminated and anti-reflective screen, M1 and 8gb ram, Apple Pencil 2 support and to me that is way worth the difference in price.

I think for most people the iPad Air just makes more sense. It is not cheap but it is not crazy expensive like the iPad Pro. Apple should have given 128gb storage for the air but unless you are a heavy user then 64gb is fine. If you are a heavy user then you would probably just get the Pro anyway.

When it comes to just wanting a basic iPad I just don't see why the 10th gen exists at its price. I can get a 9th gen which I can use to charge my Apple Pencil 1 with the lightning port, it has an earphone jack, it is still fast and it costs around $279 at most retailers other than Apple. If I don't want to spend a lot of money and don't care about the nicer features then the 9th gen just makes a lot more sense. Around $300 with tax is a lot easier to swallow than around $500 with tax. $200 to get a slightly larger screen, slightly faster processor and cool colors and better design? Seems like a lot of money for that. Sure the FaceTime camera placement is better too.

However if I was going to spend around $500 for an iPad I would at least want the air. Then you consider you can still buy the 4th gen air and I have seen sales at Walmart for $349 for the base air 4th gen which is $100 cheaper than the regular 10th gen iPad??? Why would anyone want the 10th gen over the 4th gen air?? I would rather pay $399 or $349 for a 4th gen air any day than the regular iPad. Heck I don't see the big deal about the FaceTime camera to pay more for a worse device.

I really don't know what Apple was thinking with the 10th gen iPad. If they released it at the same price as the 9th gen then NO one would complain as it is clearly in some ways better than the 9th gen but it is just not worth the extra cost and I bet a lot of students or schools will miss the earphone jack a lot.
You are talking about bargain hunting and special deals though, not the retail price. I'm sure similar bargains would have appeared for the 10th gen had it not just been released two weeks ago.

Unfortunate timing on the release, or maybe very fortunate as the bargain basement Airs will be snapped up pretty fast leaving many folk with fewer choices.

Without a doubt:

The Air 4, IS a better deal, IF you can get one at that price while stocks last.
The Air 5 is a steal as well @ $519 - IF you can get one for that price and if budget permits.

I'd be surprised if the 10th gen goes down to $399 in a couple of months anyhow.

Forgivable by some, but one wouldn’t find any fewer number of posts here and elsewhere NOT forgiving it :) Apple’s just a verrrry effective target and there’s not an existing plausible feature set that would not yield complaints as folks obtain attention from them!

If it cost $350 I wouldn't have complained to nearly this extent, but good that you know me better than me.

So buy the iPad that costs that then - it still does exist.

This new one costs more, some stuff costs more than other stuff 🤷‍♂️ weird you don’t know that or suddenly think it would be different.
It's outdated. Maybe I will but I probably wont because I'd rather get a refurbished mini or none at all.

Weird you think it's normal to replace a 9th generation with a 10th generation that costs 36 percent MORE, and then continue selling the old one at the same price, while crippling it and cheapening it by penny pinching as many features out of it as they can.

I'm not stupid. There's a 99% chance I understand Apple better than you because they're my life passion. So actually I do understand pretty well. The fact is some people will defend Apple literally no matter what they do. I will not because sometimes they deserve to be called out, and hopefully they'll offer something less insulting.

There is also a 99% chance that I can build an igloo better than you. But who knows. All I know is that you just made an absurd statement but what can I do?

On topic though: Things cost money. Prices increase. If you see value buy it.
If you don’t, don’t buy it. Lots of tech around outside of apple. If you must have an iPad you can find one starting from about 350 new, up to several thousand. If that’s something that warrants a whinge, then great. You can happily extol the overused ‘apple defender’ label on me. I’m easy.

It's been almost two weeks since Apple introduced the revamped 10th-generation iPad, and MacRumors videographer Dan Barbera has been using it on a daily basis for the purpose of a more in-depth review for those considering it as an upgrade or a holiday gift for a family member.

The 10th-generation iPad is priced starting at $449, which makes it $120 more expensive than the 9th-generation iPad that Apple is still selling alongside it. At $449, it is $150 less than the iPad Air, a tablet that it shares many features with.

The iPad lineup is somewhat confusing now because the 10th-generation iPad and the iPad Air are so similar, but for most people, it is a good deal because it offers a solid set of features for an affordable price. Design wise, the new iPad has the same 10.9-inch display as the iPad Air, but it's not quite as advanced in terms of color and reflectivity.

Apple's newest iPad has the same general design as the iPad Air, featuring an edge-to-edge display with a Touch ID power button rather than Face ID integration. It also uses USB-C instead of Lightning, offering a more universal charging option, but it does not have Thunderbolt or the quicker transfer speeds you'll see on other iPad models.

There is an A14 chip inside the iPad, which is a good deal faster than the A13 chip in the prior-generation version. It is not as advanced as the M1 in the iPad Air, but it will last for years to come. There's a landscape FaceTime camera for the first time, which is a nice feature for those who prefer to use the iPad as a replacement for a Mac in a landscape orientation.

As a major downside, the iPad only works with the Apple Pencil 1, an unusual choice because it charges via Lightning and there is no Lightning port. You need a confusing set of adapters if you want to charge the Apple Pencil with your iPad, and it isn't clear why Apple didn't just add Apple Pencil 2 compatibility.

On the plus side, Apple designed a new Magic Keyboard Folio for the iPad, and it goes hand in hand with the landscape camera to turn the iPad into a Mac alternative. It is a two-piece accessory that works as both a cover and a keyboard, plus there is a built-in stand. Apple also added a function row, something not even available for the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro.

If you opt for the iPad Air instead of the iPad, you're paying $150 for an M1 chip, a jump in display quality, and support for Stage Manager multitasking, and if you opt for the cheaper 9th-generation iPad, you're losing quite a bit of screen real estate and opting for a much slower chip.

The 10th-generation iPad is a solid compromise between price and feature set, and it will appeal to many people who are seeking an updated tablet. What do you think of the iPad? Let us know in the comments below.

Simple. Compare, get confused, hesitate, and eventually buy later when you'll be sure.

The chances that I understand Apple better than you aren't a random or absurd statement.
I think you are either a child or a bot, as this and the other ‘I know apple better than you’ statements you are making are strange and/or childish assumptions to suggest.

This will have a hard job being the base iPad. The base iPad has been the mainstay in schools and they still use wired headphones. In the UK, at least, our underfunded system will create much resistance in replacing all headphones to comply with the new, and more expensive device. The cost may of course come down once the the present base iPad is discontinued, which would help.

The majority of $329 and $449 iPad owners likely purchased the device for media consumption. How many of those people spend $99 on a Pencil? Probably not a lot. And the Logitech Crayon is only $69.

The $449 iPad doesn't need a laminated display or Pencil 2 support. Yes, the price of iPad has increased. But at the same time, it no longer looks like a relic.

The pencil is used a lot in education so the base iPad is bought by schools and parents. Nearly every child in my daughters class have an iPad and the pencil. The price increase for the iPad 10 and probably the iPads that follow mean parents and schools will likely by buying older devices going forward. +£200 is a lot to absorb for that sector, especially now.

Absolutely! The loss of headphone jack on this level iPad is going to have a big impact. I suppose adapters will have to be purchased but what a pain in the backside that is! iPads are a fundamental part of the education system in the UK and likely across the world and the price hike is going to mean many schools aren’t going to be able to afford new models in the coming years. My daughter has just had a new iPad for her birthday and the £200 increase just couldn’t be justified. With Christmas around the corner I think Apple have missed a trick here and ultimately driven a huge sector of their customers to the iPad 9 which has some amazing deals at the moment. Retailers seem to be undercutting Apple’s own store by £70 and have packages that include the Pencil. The iPad 10 is a strange product in the range I must say.

It will be the base iPad. It’s the 10th gen iPad. It’s by default. It’s just they’re still selling the 9th gen, but that won’t be for ever. No hard job about it.

A lot of debating back-and-forth to criticize vs. justify the 10’s price increase.

I find the 40 percent price jump simply indefensible unless the 10 isn’t meant to be the entry level iPad anymore. But then why not call it something else to clarify its position in the lineup? It’s unnecessary confusion particularly by keeping the 9 available.

For mainstream consumers that 40 percent jump is a lot of money particularly in today’s economic uncertainty. Everyone naturally assumed the 10th gen would be the natural successor to the 9th and would be priced accordingly—either the same or with a modest price increase.

But there is nothing damned modest about a 40 percent increase.

A lot of debating back-and-forth to criticize vs. justify the 10’s price increase.
And, there’s not even anything to defend. The price, is the price. And, anyone that wants it will pay that price. (Or steal it?) Defending it, doesn’t change anything. Criticizing it doesn’t change anything. Sales? THAT has the POTENTIAL to change things, but mainly only if Apple’s internal goals aren’t met. My guess is that they’ve factored that into the price and, out of the billions that will never buy the iPad 10, the millions that do will be what they expected.
