Why do we even need that?
What's all this multitasking craze?
If there's one thing that iPad does well is to let you focus and enjoy what you're doing, without any clutter around and behind it.
That's the beauty of it.
Why on earth would you want to create a stressful experience on a device meant to be enjoyed?
It's really sad.

I kinda agree.

"If I don't want it, nobody should have it!!!"

If you don't like it or don't see the need for it, THEN DON'T USE THE FEATURE! All of you anti-widget people should employ the same strategy.

Still don't know what I might use that for. Anyone got examples/workflows that demonstrates this side-by-side usefulness?

Just from my personal experience...

Recently, I had to take notes in the train from a product specifications, to summarize it a bit before showing it to a client. All I had was an iPad mini.
Only way to do it was opening the file, reading it, switching apps, typing notes, switching apps, continue reading, etc...

When I'm updating a customer app to a new version (possibly new design as well), I'd like to be able to show both apps side by side to point out the differences and what's new, instead of having to switch all the time.

When I'm taking notes about a new project, it could be handy to be able to type and review the different files the client gave me.

In a more "consumer" point of view, watching a video or reading something while chatting with friends without having to switch every time I have a notification, showing an ecommerce website along with a list of things to buy, ...

I'll give you a couple right off the top of my head.

1). I only store my credit card info with Apple and Amazon. Otherwise when I buy online I have to open my ewallet to get the card info to enter on a web page. Multi-window access sure lessens all that swiping. And if you have several apps 'multi-tasking' then it can be a lot of swipes.

2). At times I'm researching something and would like to have two pages open and viewable side-by-side for comparison. Again, it's a real pain to swipe back and forth, or even change tabs when in a browser. Two browser sessions running would solve the issue. And when typing docs and using a website for reference. Sheesh, I could go on and on...

3). Even just creating a new account somewhere it would be useful to have the ewallet open so I can enter the account info. I have run into a couple of sites where I'm trying to login and when I close the app to go look up my account info the app returns to the beginning. And no, I don't remember all the different user IDs and passwords. They are all different and complex. (TimeWarner is really bad about this but some websites are too).

Surely anyone who ever spent any time in front of a computer realizes that more than one window is useful. My two examples are not even work related. I'm retired now but when I was working I really can't remember ever working with just one window at a time.

If the iPad is to ever be taken seriously in most business environments it has to support multiple windows.

right. If you want multitasking just buy another iPad whats wrong with people ;):D

If you want 3 windows open buy another, 4 another, if you truly need lots of windows you get 10 iPads. Simple , job sorted :D

I am prepared to get slammed for this, as i don't have a screenshot or anything, BUT

on my iPad mini the other day, i was in the queue checkin in at Narita Airport, when i got an email from American Airlines.
Opened the email, then clicked on the AA link. Mini was in landscape mode.
I then got called forward and pressed the power button to lock it.
Checked in, went to lounge, showered etc, then opened up the iPad again to download the paper.
When i opened up, on the left hand side, i had the AA website, that i could scroll up and down on, over the Mail app, which i could still see the later side (right hand side) of my mails. Went to grab the phone and take a picture, but by the time i was there the mini had crashed.

As i say, prepared to get slammed but it sounds like thats what its likely to be...

Dave

You went to grab the phone to take a picture? You don't think a screenshot would've been a bit higher quality and quicker? Albeit not as good of evidence. If you were in an elevator that would be the kicker.

I for one, would love to sit in an airport bored out of my skull and watch my Tivo from home while at the same time sending an email or surfing a web site.

Uhh... they had the whole "multiple apps" on one screen before Apple, so I don't understand what you're getting at.

I think Microsoft ran an ad a while back touting Apple for not having multitasking on the iPad. I'm guessing that's what OP was referring to.

Clearly, MS and Google caught wind that Apple was working on this and rushed to get their multi-tasking features out the door first. :p

Just for you and the 6 up votes you got information. Android split screen multitasking at present has nothing to do with Google at all, its all made and developed by Samsung or maybe some app developer and was introduced some time ago, its most likely Applied have copied Samsung in this instance considering how under developed this code is. And as for Microsoft they too introduced split screen multitasking on the first gen Surface RT and PRO back in 2012, so again Apple are copying them.

About time Apple did copy these two too as it makes good use of a tablets screen. Looking forward to the feature if they don't keep it for the new iPads only. I would imagine Apple's implementation would be a lot smoother and nicer than Samsung or Microsofts.

Thanks for the examples. I guess some people could use it. Me on the other hand; I use my iPad mostly for browsing reddit, facebook, twitter, looking something up on imbd and casual gaming. None of those activities require me to switch apps that often. When I do switch it is because I'm done/bored with the current activity and want to do something else.

It does need to be a bit blurry otherwise it wouldn't be authentic which is hard to achieve with a screenshot.

This is apples code, so it's how it works right now (internally at least)

arn

Then tell me where I can activate the mouse position indicator in iOS and how to connect a mouse. That is a fake video, even if there is code inside iOS 8 the video doesn't use it.
