You know, you don't need the backlight to be on. If you've ever noticed, the iPhone's screen is somewhat reflective, so all you need is the LCD screen to be on and displaying the time, but not the backlight. This way it wouldn't drain as much battery, but constantly displaying the time probably won't let the processor go to sleep or something like that, so I suppose it'll be a small (but still noticeable) impact on your battery life.

yeah, sorry. let me be more specific.

I'm not talking about touching buttons to display the time. I want to know how you can get it to constantly display the time so you don't have to touch anything or even be physically near it to see what time it is. You know, the way other phones do.

thx

The iPhone is a phone. What you are looking for is a watch. They are sold many different places, you should invest in one. They are also much easier to see the time on, compared to always taking out your phone. If you would like to see how long the battery would last with this feature, set the phone to never lock and don't manually lock it at all. Your battery will be dead in about 10 hours with some use involved.

Why is everyone defending the iPhone like it can't do what Bambam is asking?
The iPhone does this quite well.
Jeez guys,
go to settings/auto-lock/never, and the screen will stay on with the clock for as long as you like.
I use this setting when my iPhone is docked at work with a slideshow from photos.

I've never though about this before... but now that it's come up... it would be nice if the screen stayed on while charging (or gave you the option at least)... That way, if you keep your iPhone by your bed (like I do) you always have the time right there..... If they did added that feature I could just get rid of my alarm clock all together hah.

A message indcation light would be even better. I do miss that from my blackberry. But these are all small issues. That will be added in the future.

This feature has existed since day 1.
See above. You can leave the screen on while charging and set it to anything you want, slideshow, homescreen, etc.

People always use the quote "my old phone did it". This is a different product. My old TV had knobs and buttons. My new TV has just a power button. Why couldn't they build my new TV with more buttons? Because, they just didn't...and it would look ugly.

The problem is, people get SO used to niche features on other phones, that they think that any phone without them is subpar. I mean, scheduled vibrate. Really? Flipping a small switch is THAT difficult? Great if they put it in...awesome. But to complain that the phone doesn't have this niche feature in its original concept is just dumb.

If you want a different product, get a different product. Stop bitching that you didn't do your research and expect this phone to do things it was not designed to do. This is not blind Apple-fanboyism...this is common sense. Apple designed a touchscreen phone. If you want a touchscreen phone, buy an iPhone. If you want buttons and small front screens that show time and scheduled vibrate, buy a phone that does that. It's really not that difficult.

Well, i was fortunate enough to get this phone as a present. I didn't buy it. Thus i didn't do any research. Now I'm asking if people know how to access features that I had on my old phone. You're right, I must be way out of line.

Btw - the scheduled vibrate is for ppl who forget to turn their phone back on after putting it on silent. I'm sure it's happened to you, and it's not that difficult to program it in.

So I tried turning onto never sleep/lock mode - but i noticed that when you put it on sleep after 1 min, the screen goes ~1/2 dim before going completely off. Is there a way to get the screen to go ~1/2 dim w/o ever going into full sleep mode with the screen off?

PS - on the modern day TV they moved the buttons to the remote. The iphone doesn't transfer buttons from one spot to another, it REMOVES features from older phones. Wow, some people are idiots. Apple isn't perfect.

In case you didn't see the part where I wrote "This isn't blind Apple fanboyism", reread...

Anyway. Notice that I never specifically said that what you wanted was stupid, or that you should instead have a watch so that you can be classy (I haven't owned a watch in probably 10 years either). What I was saying is that it gets irritating to listen to people complain about features that supposedly every other phone has, but don't take into account that not every other phone has only a large screen as the mode of input and output. My old phone was a flip-phone with a front screen and guess what? That screen went to sleep after about 10 seconds...it might have been an option to leave on, but I never looked.

Like others have said, if you really need your phone to display the time 24/7 without touching a button, then turn off the auto-lock. Please forgive me if I sound like I'm sleeping with Steve (that black turtleneck just really gets me all hot inside), but maybe they just never thought that everyone needed instant access to the time, without the enormous difficulty of pressing a small button (even though their hand is on the phone to pull it out of their pocket anyway). Maybe if enough people complain, they can make it display the time with the backlight off, as someone suggested. Same goes for scheduled vibrate. Great. Cool. Neat idea. But really, can you honestly complain that this was not included, simply because your old phone had it?

Your line about "removing features" from older phones...again, these are trivial features at best, and not something that is an abomination if not included. I know, I know...every feature ever to have existed on any phone needs to be on every future model of every phone because at least six people used it on that other phone.

I wouldn't have even cared to respond if your original post wasn't in big bold letters, like some kind of crime had been committed on humanity because they neglected to leave the time on the screen or give you scheduled vibrate. If you had said "Hey does anyone know if it's possible to have the phone display the time at all times?", I would have glanced right over the post. But "How can I get..." and "every other phone known to man has this" annoys me.

Call me an idiot all you want. See, here's the thing...I understand that it's STILL a revision 1 product. It's their first phone, their first attempt at a phone. Oh, God forbid they did not include every feature that everyone wanted right away. Just because I understand or accept the exclusion of a "feature" hardly defines me as an idiot or says that I support Apple in every decision. I agree that I would like to have seen a few more updates in the past few months with some more interesting features, but whatever..the SDK will bring plenty of them.

There have been a few decent suggestions on how to do what you want (as far as your screen-time debacle). I'm afraid the vibrate issue will have to wait for the SDK or a future Apple update.

Now, to go fawn over my Steve screensaver.

You're right, using bold to draw emphasis to a question is completely out of line. What was I thinking. And to ask the question in a way that shows my frustration... unbelievable! how could anyone possibly be that annoying?!

the reason why many of you are labeled as being enamored on Apple's jock is because of your defense of a product that lacks basic features. overlooked features. a proper response to the original question (since we're now playing that game) could be, "that feature doesn't exist," "that sucks," or "maybe they could fix that problem." Sure simplicity and elegance have their own values, but it's not mutually exclusive with the features i'm talking about. i know, i know. it's 1st generation.

It is a hardware limitation I believe...Has nothing to do with battery. The Samsung Galaxy also does not have a sleep clock.

Ive checked NOKIA N8 and it is a fairly new phone and it does have a big LCD screen and it DOES show the clock as usual

I wish iPhone had it too...

A call voice recorder and a answering machine are also on my wish list for iphone...
