However, Siri has more baggage than an airport carousel.
Which is why it’s time to start over and has been for the last 5+ years. If you’ve been paying attention to the rumors you’d have heard how long it takes to update Siri to simply recognize new terms, etc.
You can only fix a structure with a bad foundation for so long before it all comes crashing down and you’ve got to bulldoze it, pour a new foundation and rebuild the freaking thing. I’d argue Apple has been there with Siri for a long time now and has been putting bandaids on bullet wounds.
Do you know how useful the HomePod or HomePod mini would be if it ran ChatGPT versus Siri? I’d go out tomorrow and refresh both OG HomePods I own, add 4 more to the mix (two for Apple TV I own) and replace all HomePod mini’s I own right on the spot, no questions asked as long as it could receive updates to use newer models as they become available. You could hide the small complexity there is from users by using the most recent widely accepted model by default but let advanced users set a specific model per device or even use a voice command to change it, etc.
Apple needs to build its own LLM from scratch or license something very good that’s working right out of the gate now. If I were Apple with all of those cash reserves I’d be in full on acquisition mode to buy an up and comer that had either already released something with potential that simply needs financing to bring to full fruition or a company close to releasing something right now. Barring that I’d be looking to partner with and license the best solution I could. They are already partnered with OpenAI so I’d be turning there first. Pull a Microsoft and make a huge investment in them with licensing terms that give Apple a crack at the latest and greatest they are able to produce with that influx of cash giving them immediate access to what’s already there right now.
