This product is Apple's halo product and is already 2 silicon generations behind current. LOL
lol. Not that it even matters. Their asses don’t have software to take advantage of it especially the iPad Pro. The damn M1 is still too powerful for 99% of iPad applications. Let’s not even talk about the M4 now we’re likely at 99.9%.

I'm not spending 3.5-5K € because it makes someone feel things.

And if you have to have get me to sit through a 20m+ video and experience someone's emotions to sell me on a product then whatever value it holds has to be highly emotional, irrational, and probably abstract.

Also, Jon Prosser is about as much of an Apple enthusiast as anyone can be and makes a living off the positive and negative hype surrounding everything Apple.

I do like his videos. But I'm not taking advice on AVP for something who has dedicated their life to Apple products, or really anyone in the tech and Apple influencer bubble.

Prosser eats and sleeps Apple. I'm never going to relate.

Instead of this "you don't own it so you'll never get it" talk, I want you to write a single paragraph or a list of bullet points why anyone would want or needs to own an AVP if they already own an iPhone and a Mac, or an iPhone and an iPad. Be specific.

Yes, I get that the visual and spatial experience might be uniquely convincing and immersive. I'm not immune to AR/VR.

But for which work related task would any professional opt for an AVP over what they can already do better, cheaper, faster or more conveniently on an iPhone or a Mac, or a combo of the two?
1) Changes the way you interact with your tech. I am no longer looking down and the world disappears (unless I choose to go into an environment). I feel MUCH more connected to the world with this product.
2) visionOS IS the future NOW. The way your virtual windows float midair and you can interact with a keyboard just by poking the letters midair-I can't express just how delightful this is.
3) If you combine what this does-arguably BETTER than most of Apple's other portable devices-it's a no-brainer. The screen is MUCH bigger than a MacBook. It's an OLED 4k display-a MacBook is way behind in display tech (minus the refresh rate). Only a video editor who needs the power of a M3 Max chip wouldn't like the performance of the AVP due to the M2 which is NO slouch on the AVP.
4) When you consider what AVP does and does so well it actually pretty reasonable. If my job would allow me to use the AVP while working I would. Sadly I cannot so I have an M4 iPad Pro 13". If I didn't have to have the iPad I wouldn't. The AVP would replace it entirely.

Exactly. The AVP doesn't need M4...the M2 is still an incredibly capable chip that even the AVP isn't fully exploiting. If I was Apple I'd be more concerned with padOS and how it's failing.

Thanks for sharing that. He does get a bit yappy, but that video does a great job of showing the experience of living with the AVP. And you're right, there's nuance and thought (from personal experience!) that he can include, that goes way beyond the reflexive "it's like sticking an iPad to your face plus it weighs literally 5 tons, no I haven't tried it and never will but I haaaate it anyway" type comments here.

Long video, worth the time though. I haven't even been to a store for a demo, and this gives me insight I didn't have.
Agree...but I found myself nodding along during the video when he started getting into the part that trying to tear apart the headset for its limitations forgets about the EXPERIENCE of using it which is simply amazing. I do not regret the purchase and I cannot wait to see what WWDC holds for it.

This guy’s entire climactic point is that people not doing an experience can simulate that experience. I’d rather be the person doing the real thing and not sitting alone in my house pretending to.

Your point being? That if you can't be that one doing the real thing, than the experience is invalid? Wonder why so many people read books, watch tv, listen to recorded music? I am sure they would prefer to be there too. But somehow experiencing even second hand is better than not experiencing at all for a lot of things. That was his point. This brings you that much closer to the 'real thing.'

Yup. And who knows? Maybe experiencing it on AVP makes you want to go out and do it MORE because the experience, while virtual, is VISCERAL. I did the Animal encounter on AVP and found myself getting emotional around the rhinos. I now want to go to a rhino sanctuary and experience it for real.

In EU will cost at least 5k for sure. They can keep it.

To all those saying this is "too expensive", you are rtight if you view this as an entertainment device. Few people can afford a $3,500 toy.

But what if you were a pathologist? I wonder if Vision Pro would be usfull for viewt CAT scan data? Our current technology reduces the 3D scan dat to a 2D representation so it can be displayed on a monitor. But you'd not have to do that for Vision Pro

I'd very much like to use Vision Pro for 3D CAD design work. But it will be years before the CAD developers figure out a good user interface for 3D design. 3D viewing of the designed part is done now but I want to do the development in 3D.

Professionals are used to spending 4-digit prices for their tools to $3,500 is "affordable". I while back I was on a job and a plubing crew was also working , they broke a PEX tool, so one of them went out to buy a replacement for $2,500. He will get the old one repaired later. I bet they have $70K worth of tools and parts in the truck. And this a normal plumber. Back to the pathologist, What do you think the 2D flat monitor they use costs? About the same as Vision Pro.

Just because it is "expensive" to you, it is not for others. Many people can spend $3,500 with no need to think about budget. There exists a huge class-devide. Here in So. California many people are stuck in $20/hour minimum wage jobs but there are tens of thousands of people around here (Manhatten Beach, CA) who can afford their $20k/month mortgage. A house near me just sold for $8M. Taxes will be $160,000 per year. There are people who can afford $3,500 toys or just write them off as a business expense.

My are is robotics and I'm thinking of so many use cases for Vision Pro. One is inspection. A sewage plant broke down near me a few years ago and it sat for some time before they would even get in to take a look. It seems a the basement room with all the high voltage switching gear was flooded with raw sewage. No one wanted to go in and look. Now I'm thinking about a robot with a 3D camera. Then you have some managers and engineers in a conference room with 3D AR googles and all of them see the flooed room. they all can look in different directions and and see different parts of the room. The repair and rebuild so is can't happen again cost about $600M. The cost of robots and VR google is pocket change when you are talking about industrial accedents.

Then there are the developers building the VR apps. How much does buying a few pair of Vision Pro add to the cost of the project? Again pocket change. Ten developers with overhead and benefits will burn $2,000 per hour and labor and overhead. So give them a few pair of the goggles and hopefully something comes out of it. The added cost is not much.

Apple has thrown incredible hardware at iPad for years now, and sales are still flat...when will they figure out that people do not want a hobbled training wheels OS on a "Pro" machine...

(and I would say the same goes for Vision Pro as well...)

I guess we are all going to pretend that replacing real experiences with simulations is somehow a good thing when doing this exact same thing already minus a headset has created so many physical and psychological problems for people. How do you experience something that may cost you thousands of $ to get to? Also you are forgetting the billions of people who don’t have the means. Surely XR is a great way to provide accessibility to those that don’t have unlimited funds and time to experience the whole world irl.

When one takes an annual view over the global market place, computer sales are flat, car sales are flat, cell phone sales are flat... the reality is only so many people need so many devices. maybe the market is flat because it has already saturated?

If that is true then iPad saturated the market in about 4 years because sales were gangbusters until then and sort of started tapering off. It's pretty much unheard of for a new product to saturate a market in 4 years.

Shrugs, you say it is unheard of, but is it really unheard of for tech products? iPods sales stabilized in 6 years, where is it now? We can agree the facts support that iPad sales have stabilized for the last few years, you want to blame the OS, but maybe the market is just so large for a tablet form factor. I am sure if they did, say, port over Mac OSX to the iPad it would sell another 6 units to the folks here clamoring for it, but would it make that much of a difference over all? I suppose it could canabalize the Mac sales, but the number of iPads sales already dwarfs the number of Mac sales.

In the meantime apple sells somewhere around 50 million iPads a year. Not the worst problem to have.

There are some people who are simply unable to do the real thing. This is how a lot of content was for me growing up, I didn't have the ability to play any games I was interested in so I would watch some playthroughs. South Park made fun of streaming and commenting, why would you watch someone play when you own the game. I think consuming reaction content is pretending to have your own opinion, instead of watching it and forming opinions yourself. I hear ya on the problems though, there are some interesting studies about VR and cognition.

Do all of you who are dissing AVP actually have one and used it? Here is the PERFECT video to describe what an owner like me feels:

Yeah I tried it, couldn’t get the eye recognition to work because I have strabismus. Had to use hand gestures and/or head gestures to get around because the eye tracking was turned off. Made it extremely difficult to use.

If I have to manipulate things with my fingers, why do I have to use an indirect input with this thing on my head… when I can directly manipulate things with my fingers on an iPhone or iPad?

I am sorry to hear it didn't work for you. I hope they can work to improve the technology so everyone can enjoy the full AVP experience.

I wouldn't be surprised if a "Apple Ring" or some such thing comes out as an accessory to help with that.
