What a lot of us who are skeptical about the use of this device need to understand, its all optional. You don't need to use it in every context of computing. If you want to see each other, use your iPhone or iPad or go meet up in person. When I am on my computer watching a YouTube unboxing or movie, I don't say to myself, gee, I wish my roommate was laying beside me in my bed watching this movie.

But there will be moments you will want to sit with your family and friends and do watch a movie together. Heck, there are straight to web movies, yet I still go to the theatre to watch movies. I could have waited a few months to watch 'No time to die' and Avatar, but I still went to theater. We are making this seem like starting in 2024 theaters, TV's and iPads are gonna be wiped out by the Vision Pro. But I think a lot of the skepticism is connected to the pricing. I bet if Apple said it was US $999, a lot of these concerns would be less of discussion. Give it a few generations and your wish will be granted.

I don’t want to interact with peoples’ personas, I want to interact with them as they actually are. Especially people I’m close to, children and grandchildren come to mind. I want them to interact with me as well.
Then use Facetime and save yourself $3500.

This is an impressive forward-thinking technology but I'm not a fan of 3D Spatial Personas'. It just looks creepy. No matter who it's going to be. It will always remind me of Zuckerberg.

So what do you propose as a solution? How will you create a Facetime like experience with this device on your face? Perhaps some frontal extensions with cameras focused on your device covered face would be better. I'm always astounded at the outrage over certain features, but no utterance of a better solution. Perhaps people should try it before criticizing it.

I’ll just use the Memoji I made. Far less creepy. Not that I can afford to have this problem. Yet.

To me its the difference between mid 90s characters in video games and characters now.

The Zuck is stuck in the 90s.

this is why it's creepy Bob. He articulated it well
Instead of just criticizing Apple you could come up with a practical way of doing this. I'll bet you can't. People here are quick to criticize every little Apple thing but don't come up with better ways of doing it. It's a good compromise. I guess you could open a Facetime connection and hold your iPhone in front of your goggle covered face to send to someone for that personal touch you need.

I got to thinking about Ready Player One. Where the virtual world allows anyone to look like anything they want. The introduction of "the OASIS" is great. This is basically the vision of the "metaverse" but coming up with a virtual persona is part of that vision and could be yet another way people are able to express themselves as they see themselves. And that is important.

People come to the OASIS for all the things they can do, but they stay because of all the things they can be. Tall, beautiful, scary, a different sex, a different species, live-action, cartoon. It’s all your call.

So we’ll get “create a face that looks like you” to match the “create a voice that sounds like you”. And we can look young forever! :)
I wanna train it off my face 20 years and 50 pounds ago!

By all means let’s combine “Spartial Personas” with “Personal Voice” and then our AI-generated images and sounds can just talk to each other over FaceTime long after we’re dead.
I’m sure “create an AI that thinks like you” will come within a decade or two.

By the way, there’s a nice short story “Learning to be me” by Greg Egan. Here’s a copy.

Put this thing on so it can scan your face... scan your voice... scan your house... scan your family... track your eyes to see what's going on inside your brain... And this is only Gen 1. If you think things are scary and invasive now, just wait.

What's the point of Face-Time when it's not really you? If I get haircut, scratch on my face from my puppy, it won't show that. Just makes it less human.

I know it's a trade-off but not understanding the benefit. Especially when the new Face-Time effects in Sonoma seem useful for communicating (like having your monitor display behind you).
Thing is - this is just another option. It doesn't mean that you can't use Facetime on your iPhone or iPad. If you want the other party to see the real you, then do that!

Maybe some of the benefits are if you're having a bad hair day, or haven't put on your make up yet, or you just don't want the other party to see you as you are, then use the spatial persona.

I really don’t get it like based on that screenshot, what is the difference to having the notes on one screen and the teams chat on another screen besides now having it floating instead? At the end of the day it’s practically the same? In fact, seeing the real world behind it makes it even more distracting.
Guess I’ll have to see it in person to maybe get it

This is the issue I have with it (besides the price), I don't see the usefulness. Maybe though it has to be seen in person, you're right.

Everything you listed would be entirely voluntary though, not sure I'd label it invasive when you are choosing to do it.

Better still FaceTime for audio - better quality than mobile networks and frankly who wants or needs to see a face. I've found video calls get very awkward at both ends after more than 30 seconds. Apple (and everyone else with skin in the game) always show beautiful hyperactive people on chats - but lets get real - who is like that all of the time?
