Vista: Didn't think MS would take it that far.

the frosted glass looks nice. and I wouldn't mind if apple would include a few free basic games as well (especially minesweeper)

I understand it's a microsoft product and will thus be wrought with issues, but I think that at least to some extent this is progress over XP. Definately not enough, especially considering how long it has been in development, but something.

You know, I ALMOST like the transparency -- especially how it blurs everything behind it.

I don't like the blurring at all. One of the major reasons why I like transparent windows is so I can see, or read, what's behind. This just screws it up.

Still kinda ugly. But, better then what they have now...

(Although I like the silver theme of XP best - assuming I had to pick one)

WTF

Didn't you know? Everything in Vista is transparent so that you can barely see how bad the operating system is.
Yup, not sure if this is posted anywhere else in the post, but its called Aeroglass, requires a high end video card. And because of it, it's going to reduce OpenGL Performace by 50%

Apparently Microsoft will include a Chess game in Vista. Is this a move to add a little class to their product or is it to further confuse users? Now Windows users are going to be very disoriented without Solitaire. Surely they could have made an updated 3D version.

[Note from moderator: This was the start of another thread, now merged into this one.]

I didn't realize that Windows users knew how to play chess.
Checkers, maybe but not Chess. :D :D :D

He's talking about the huge gap between the minimise/maximise/close and the actual window content.

Then why are the arrows pointing out heights? (You can see the apparent one-pixel-off thing in the original image in the thread's first page.)

Yeah, as Nermal pointed out, I was talking about the huge gap... I don't get why its like that. Its a waste of space... Not to mention, fugly...

Oh! That's competition for the unbalanced space to the left of the search bar in iTunes 5.

Hate to sound a doom-sayer btw, but I was just thinking (dont take any of this the wrong way - its just random thoughts outloud :p) Apple switch to Intel > Offering systems using CPU's that are available, and have equivelents on standard PC's. They are cheaper (im assuming Apple's pricing will remain 'premium') which makes Build-Quality and Mac-OSX the 'difference'.

Now vista is using features simular to OSX. To the average users (even if MS's versions are poorly implimented) thats removing another reason why they might consider a Mac. Vista has 'uber security' too they are told (come on you know MS are going to boast that constantley no matter what), it has all the bells and whistles and fancy features. Suddenly OSX does not look so special - that leaves 'Build Quality'. But which is going to win over joe public? Build-Quality for a premium price, or the fact that he can run all those latest games on his new shiny PC as well as all that software?

Does he get what everone else is getting or go for a different platform?

I still wanted to know actually, how does the PPC > X86 affect apples main users? the professional/creative i mean? They are going to need to upgrade software to get the best performance, and i thought PPC was also more suited to the kind of work that the creative/professional users did... thats why i thought Apple used it.

in my opinion, i think widows vista is JUST a COSMETIC upgrade.

what are the REAL benifits of upgrading to VISTA (Other than YOU HAVE TO) ?

Personally, i cant see any (many have been removed e.g monad)

I think microsoft should go the "BSD" route, scrap thier OS, use BSD as a stepping stone and go from thier, THAT would be a REAL upgrade (Actually worth looking forward to)

Until then, ill stick to SUSE for my work (until i can afford a mac), and leave windows for one and only one thing......Counter-Strike:SOurce

has anyoen seen what the supposed system recs for this bloat ware are?? I found this link: http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2005/09/07/vista_hardware_reqs/
It seems that vista will force everyone to upgrade for big $$$$, maybe they felt since they could steal interface ideas why not make it so that pcs running windows vista were expensive as well (why not steal pricing initiative from apple, they steal everything else), then that'll show apple

Man this is so stupid! I hate it so much. Yet I love it so much how much Vista's going to SUCK!

When I read it off of somewhere it said those reqs. plus the CPU had to be dual-core or dual cpu 8 GHz. That was optimum - recommended.

Be careful guys. While I dont think Vista is that great, to the unwashed masses it will look like a significant upgrade and they'll probably lap it up. I think the transparency is actually OK but Im wondering how much Id be pissed off with it if I was using productivity apps for a long time ie Photoshop etc.

Cant believe they are trying to gain cred with putting chess on the system. Cheesy. It does look good though.

Think about it this way people, They are only just catching up with OS X Tiger. Let them come out with more stuff like this so the Apple developers can have a good look at it and wipe the floor with em when Leopard comes out. :)

I like Vista over XP. Can't say that either can hold a candle to Tiger, but the green and blue look never really grew on me.

It's good that MS is copying what apple does in OS X. Forces apple to give us more stuff to stay ahead of the game.

If Windows Vista ever got as user-friendly, good-looking, and as secure as OS X... then that's a good thing. We'd be getting what Apple is currently offering, and we'd be getting it at a cheaper price. I don't buy Apple because it's "Apple" - I buy it because it's better. If that changes, then there's no reason to stick to apple.

You realized you just used logic, right? That's going to offend a lot of people.
