. So what happened? Windows 95 happened, that's what. AND IT WAS A DISASTER FOR APPLE - IT KILLED APPLE!

Please, stop the drama. Apple had a lot more going wrong for it than Windows 95.

(Would that be Apple death kneel #993 that you just spewed?) Looks like Apple isn't dead.

Then Jobs came around, and got Apple moving again.

The part that got me about the Gates keynote was his idea of the house of the future. I hate touch-screens, so I hope he's wrong. Anyway he showed the TV with a glorified RSS reader on it. Then he showed how you could view the video on your cellphone while you drove to work (brilliant! Drive while WATCHING your cellphone), and then you could view the video once you got to work. All this technology WILL be possible, he said, by the end of the "digital decade." WOW!

So... did the digital decade start in 1995? Because if I'm not mistaken, I can view videos on my computer, we have touch screens, and you can view video on a cell phone. Maybe he meant by 2010 more than like 10 people will own a tablet PC and people will be able to somehow drive and watch a cell phone at the same time...

Oh and that "joke" about mother nature being runner up for Time person of the year? Can we say uncomfortable silence?

Has anyone noticed that they very first thing ever announced about Vista is its visuals? Not security which is the #1 issue with WinXP and every other OS MS has delivered?

This visual alt tab thing ISNT productive, nor is it elegant its just a reason, along with bigger title bars and menus of EACH application window, for me to spend more money on a larger display! Hey I like 30" plus LCD's just like anyone else but the size of it isnt worth it, so its just not worth playing.

If this is a look of things to come with what MS is offering business' my god ever business user is going to have the intelligence of Windows-based AOL users.

Watching the keynote, I was fascinated by Microsoft's dilemma. On one hand, gaming is becoming one of the major reasons not to switch to an alternative OS (like OSX) yet marketing the gaming aspect too hard may be at the detriment of their new XBox. :D

My brother just got back from CES. He loved the Treo 700, but found Vista to be the biggest disappointment of show. Couldn't believe how little they seemed to accomplish in so long. I asked him if it at least looked nice. He said there was just too much going on. From the brief glimpses I've had, I don't so much care for the looks of it either.

Wow....

I don't know what was worse. Gates' horrible "joke" about the hurricane, or that tool he had demo-ing Vista. Maybe I missed something, but these are the four things I got out of his presentation:

  • Old Windows was "cluttered" Something that Vista is getting rid of
  • All of the "new" features except one are pretty much taken from OSX...Gadgets? C'mon. I kinda like the sidebar idea, but I'd hate to have anything smaller than a 20" monitor. And the "sideshow" was pathetic. So you get this tiny little window on the outside of your laptop? I guess that means I have to buy a brand new laptop then....oh wait, I already own a PDA.
  • Windows Vista is going to put consumers back in control of their PCs
  • Windows Vista is going to deliver what consumers expect from the next generation of Windows PCs

I have yet to see a single thing in Vista that impresses me. Nothing.

As for market share, I personally don't think we'll see much in the way of market share shifts. Windows won't necessarily shed the stigma regarding security. And it's typically the more saavy users--the ones who don't get sucked up into hype--who seem to be most receptive to switching to the Mac.

Has anyone been watching the Bill Gates keynote speech at CES.

Particularly the bit about Vista.

Redmond does NOT innovate. For spending 10 times what Apple spends on R+D you'd think they'd come up with some cool stuff more often. Watch THIS:

As I have said MANY times, they are an abomination. Does Vista REALLY have ANYTHING that's not 2002? Really? Do they?
No.

You know... talking about a system that's already out and running in it's almost 4th incarnation and one that has it's first beta phase is kinda pointless. Let's start comparing Vista with Leopard when we know the details. Then we'll know how it might pan out. For sure we'll know in 2007 when both are released.
I agree, one thing that's supposedly in the works for Leopard 10.5 is a resolution-independent GUI. Currently if you compare OS X running on an iBook at 1024x768 and OS X running on a 30" Cinema Display at 2560x1080 (or whatever it is), you get quite a different experience. Everything will appear teeny tiny on the larger display, some text may be very hard to read, buttons are too small to click easily, scroll bars hard to drag, etc. But with resolution-independence you can adjust all those elements to any screen size and still have them look good (as screens increase in resolution over time this technique becomes more and more effective). I think MS was also working on this for Vista (Avalon I think?), but I'm not sure if that's something that made the cut or not. Anyway yeah, we know a few things:

1. Many of the "innovative" features will be shamelessly ripped off from Apple. That's just the way it is, always has been, always will be.

2. It's still Windoze and it's still an MS product. Until they give me a reason to not assume those things are bad signs, that's still two black marks for me.

3. It's not fair to compare it to Tiger. Let's wait until a year from now when we can compare it to Leopard (or at least dev/beta versions of each). I assume Apple will have a few tricks up its sleeves for its new version.

Yes, Vista looks like OSX.
Ergo, Apple better start spending it advertising dollar and get the word out or 1995 will repeat itself.

Remember, Apple is in the unenviable position of competing against MS in OS, and at the same time needing MS to survive via Office. Apple can't rock MS's boat toooo much.

I think you make a very good point here. If Apple really wanted to, they could go all out and slam MS for ripping off OSX, but in doing so, they could piss them off to the point where they stop developing Office for Mac. MS's attitude towards WMP for Mac (hardly supported) or IE (not supported at all) shows they're not shy about ignoring the Mac community if they so desire.

heh. whatever, i could seriously care less about the new OS MS has to bring. I'm just counting down to MWSF and get some intel news and maybe some inteli machines and possibly some info about Leopard. Who knows what Apple has up there sleeves.

I almost broke my powerbook earlier.

I was watching the GatesNote and all-but leapt out of my seat (where my powerbook was perched on my lap) screaming a whole manner of profanities. Every time they introduced a new "feature" of Vista, I noted it had been ripped off from Apple.

My main problem with this is my friend Steve (not Jobs). Every time we chat about computers we always end up on this whole windows vs. mac thing - I try not to anymore because it's getting tedious. He always sits there telling me how much better Microsoft is, whilst his computer sits behind him slowly dieing from the latest virus he has managed to get it infected with... (literally, we were having a conversation once and the whole thing crashed out)

But I can just see it now. Once he gets his hands on Vista he'll be all like "see what Vista can do?" and i'm going to have to mention that we've been doing it here on Mac OS X for between 1 and 5 years. (Spotlight right through to thumbnails for minimised windows...)

This sucks. Because the tiny part of me that's still a windows user does like the eye-candy. It doesn't look terrible... but the more dominant Mac user part of my personality knows that it's a complete rip-off. It makes me angry
