I thought it was strange that I had been getting missed calls but nobody was leaving voicemails. About a week ago I got the "problem connecting to voice mail" error but things appeared to be working fine...

My wife mentioned that everyone at her office (all on iPhones of course) were not getting voice mails... sure enough, I dialed in manually (called my own number, pressed * enter passcode, #) and I had FOUR messages from the past few days!!!!

    This is so not cool.
There must be more people with this problem since it's happening to at least my wife and I and everyone at her work!

    Anyone?

    Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A306 Safari/6531.22.7)

I'd get that outside my coverage area yes ( Europe etc) but it's been working fine here. That IS a big deal. And yes it would piss me off. Sorry dude.

    Same thing here.

On one occasion I've received the Visual Voicemail a couple days after the v/m was received. I just checked manually and there were 2 others there that I was not notified of.

I would REALLY love to find a quick fix for this. Any ideas?

    Bump.

I've missed two more voicemails yesterday... this is serious. My wife is still missing voicemails and everyone at her office is missing voicemails. I haven't had an actual voicemail come through in like 2 weeks.

EVERYONE, CHECK YOUR VOICEMAILS MANUALLY AND RESPOND IF YOU'RE HAVING PROBLEMS TOO.

    This needs a fix asap.

    Visual Voicemail broken

Indeed, it is broken for me as well. I just put in a call to AT&T - their systems are down and they'll "get back to me"... I also noticed a couple of calls going to vmail but not showing up on visual voicemail. I performed a manual retrieve and found 9 voicemails - while none show up in visual voicemail.

I just called my voicemail box...11 unheard messages! I haven't gotten a voicemail since mid-July. What is going on, AT&T?

Hmm...just tested and it's not working for me either (AT&T). The missed call shows in the recents list, but VM doesn't show at all.

Spoke with AT&T customer care for a half-hour. I reset my network settings and they also reregistered the phone on their end, but I'm still not getting my voicemails in the visual box. At least they're still saving on the network. Fix this, AT&T!

Well I can't say I'm glad other people are having this problem... but it's nice to know I'm not crazy.

It's like you literally have to be 'looking' for a voicemail to notice it's gone since missed calls show up and the occasional voicemail comes through. This is seriously unacceptable! AT&T once agains finds a way to undermine the iPhone's core feature... the phone!

AT&T's answer to me was to just keep checking the voicemail after missed calls as it was likely a problem with the iPhone... they mentioned the upcoming iOS update but it's pretty clear to me that has nothing to do with it.

Like always, nothing will be done until an onslaught of people call to complain.

How do we get the word out for people to test theirs and raise hell?

Why Your Visual Voicemail is Not Working

I've had the same problem as others on this thread. Callers leave a voice message, but it does not show up in Visual Voicemail, nor do I get an alert that a message has been left.

It took only 45 minutes on the phone with Applecare and AT&T to find out the problem and solution.

One of the "enhancements" in IOS 4 is a limit on the number of voice messages that appear on the iPhone. The limit is around 15-20, but no one knows for sure. That's because this is an undocumented "feature" of the new IOS.

Once you reach your limit, no new messages appear, although they are still stored on AT&T's voicemail server.

You must routinely delete voice mails to avoid maxing out on the iPhone. And simply deleting is not enough. You must also "clear" your deleted messages. Finally, you have to clear deleted messages manually because they automatically delete only if older then 30 days.

No one at Apple appears to know about this limitation in IOS 4, and the first level techs at AT&T don't either.

To summarize, make sure you have no more than 15 visual voicemail messages on your iPhone, including those in the delete folder.

Hard to believe that Apple would build in a new limitation like this - a crucial one at that - and not document it with their own techs or AT&T.

Ok, can't wait to try it, but that sucks. I'd love the ability to archive some messages if I have to keep the inbox clear.

Lowrisk--that may help some people, but I have exactly ONE message in VV right now. Two altogether in voicemail (one currently not showing). I can't imagine I've hit on some little known limitation with just two messages total, yet I'm having the same problem. So that can't be the core issue for this.

Still, hopefully it helps some users!

Thanks for the tip, but I cleared mine below 15 (and cleared the deleted items) but it's still not working for me. Maybe I need to reset my network settings again after this?

    Weird.

I was having this problem before I jailbroke my iPhone 4, and I've had it since, so I know it's not JB specific. Tried everything in this thread, and in the similar thread in the Hacks section, with no change.

Just now, I added an app from Cydia and did a respring--the minute the lock screen came up, so did a VV test message I'd sent myself over six hours ago. I just called and left another one, and that one came right through.

No idea why that would make a difference, it's not my first respring of the day. But at least it's back, for however long it lasts....

    Visual Voicemail Broken

I spoke with AT&T and they had me do a reset all settings and that cleared it up. It does reset several items, such as bluetooth connections, ringtone, etc. but it did the trick for me.

    Reset Network Settings

Yes, I believe you have to reset network settings after you clear your deleted messages and get below 15 or so current voicemails.

Doesn't this reset the known WiFi networks?

Ugh. Of everything, that's the one that sucks to re-setup the most. I'm in and out of all kinds of offices and facilities all day and have collected an impressive list of known networks over time... These would really suck to lose. Is there any way to save them?

Had the same problem. Restored, reset, everything. AT&T must have reset my voicemail 2-3 times. Nothing solved it. After talking to tech support the 4th time, they finally figured it out. They had to remove the visual voicemail feature from my account and put it back on. I lost all my saved VVM's, but in the end, I was receiving them again.

As for the limit, I have about 32 in the deleted section, and I have 1 in the main section. I still receive VVM notifications.

I had this problem for 2 wks and assumed it would get fixed.

This is what I did and get it to work.

    I updated the software--no fix
    I reset network settings--no fix
I erased the only 2 messages (from a month ago) that were showing, and then cleared those--no fix
I reset network settings again, the phone sync'd and....."New Voicemail" on my screen and the list of all of my voicemails.

I did all these steps while my phone was connected to my mac.

    Hope it helps.

I've tried all of the above to no avail. Deleting a bunch of voicemails and hard-restarting seemed to fix it for my wife for a day or two, but she's back in the same boat now.

A number of people in my wife's office are also not getting voicemails so I'm convinced this is happening to a LOT more people and they just haven't noticed yet.

    Thanks for posting this.

Just got two iPhones- wife's one needed call to AT&T to initiate visual voicemail- eventually put through to tech specialist who says there is a 'known issue'- why they didn't do that as soon as we called... very frustrating.

Anyway, mine worked fine- or so I thought but just now tried to leave myself a message and after ringing out instead of voicemail I got 'number not in service'.

Wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't read this. Haven't given out my number much yet but will be calling AT&T to check what the deal is. Wish I could send them an e-mail and have them sort it out without the inevitable 45 minute call.
