Thank you! I, too, was curious why no one was leaving me messages. This morning an unknown number called and seemingly didn't leave a message, until I reset network setting, and saw my missed call was infact the hospital with an update on my dad.

or you can use Google Voice with your existing number, just for voicemail (and transcriptions). i've been doing this for almost a year and haven't missed a single VM. and now that Google Voice is open to the public, there's really no reason not to.

Once your forward your voice mail to Google Voice, you will get an email notification. I use the app PUSHMAIL, along with GMail's filters, to get almost instant notifications on my iPhone.

Just a thought...if your AT&T VM isn't up to par.

I had the same problem for about 10-14 days in mid-August. I went to the AT&T store, and the rep there called AT&T tech support for me. At first, the answer was to 'reset network settings'. Then it was to reboot the phone (which was done multiple times). Finally, the answer was "it's a nationwide known issue".

I only realized the problem because I had my friend leave a voicemail, standing right next to me. I left him a voicemail too. His VVM showed up; mine didn't. I'm not sure big of a "nationwide known issue" it is if my friend standing 5 feet away from me gets his VVM notifications.

Anyway, a few days ago the problem resolved itself. I didn't do anything else after leaving the AT&T store, and I'm not sure if anyone on their end tweaked more settings.

I, too, am having problems accessing Visual Voicemail.
I just realized it hasn't been working since the end of July. So many missed messages. ‎(>_<;)

I tried all the fixes that have been suggested and none have worked for me. Now trying to muster the energy to talk to AT&T. Oy vey.

Fortunately mine comes up with a red bubble (without the number of messages) but then wants me to set up a pin number each time someone leaves me a message.

I have put vvm to one side and I'm just having to use the traditional method to retrieve messages until Apple bother their arse to fix things.

AT&T says it's a "known problem"

I spent 40 minutes with AT&T. They ran some tests and eventually told me that this is a "known problem" and they're working to fix it.

I am having this issue as well, but I also get No Service for the cell network. This occurred with iOS 4.02 and now 4.1. It started the day after I bought my iPhone 4. AT&T had me Reset "All Settings" and that seemed to work for a few days. But it starting doing it again. For the last 3 days in a row, my Voicemail has been having issues saying it was not available. Today I called AT&T again and they put me through their troubleshooting procedure. They finally thought it might be the sim card, something about it showing only half of it working on their end. So I had it replaced at my local AT&T office. One thing I didn't know was that all my contacts are stored on the iPhone and not the sim card.

Seems to be working for the moment, but if this doesn't fix the issue then my next step is to have the phone replaced at my local Apple store.

UPDATE: I spoke to soon, it just messed up again!

Had my iPhone 4 replaced at the Apple store today. I have a solid Edge and 3G network connection from in my house. My Voicemails are also working correctly. All is good again!

Oh, and this new replacement iPhone 4 had iOS 4.1 installed, so it must have come fresh from Apple.

I was having this problem today. The first CSR rep couldn't solve it so escalated to tech support. Tech Support said this problem is currently occuring because AT&T has changed over their "Deleted Items" server or something.

So the rep told me i'd lose my currently saved voicemails, they reset my voicemail password and told me to "Reset All Settings" on my iPhone.

I did this and voicemail came right back up and told me to re-create my voicemail box.

Shortly thereafter we realized my wife was having the same problem. Rather than call AT&T i just tried deleted all her voicemails and emptyied her deleted items folder. Then I held down "1" to call her voicemail. I went in to Administrative Options and turned her voicemail "on and off" and then reset her pin. I then did the "Reset All Settings" thing. And guess what? IT WORKED!

So try that.

Thanks for this. If anyone cares, the exact procedure I did was:

  • From the home screen go to "Phone > Visual Voicemail".
  • Remove all of your items from "Deleted Messages".
  • You should see a "Deleted Messages" folder. Go to it and choose "Clear All" and yes to confirm.

  • Call your phone's voice number, it will give you the voicemail prompt (if you have a password setup, it will ask for it now.)
  • Choose "Personal Options" (#4).
  • Choose "Administrative Options" (#2).
  • Choose passwords and enter a new password.
  • Return to the main menu and then end the call.

  • Back on your phone's home screen choose "General > Settings > Reset > Reset Network Settings". *FYI this will revert any saved Wi-Fi passwords and return Wi-Fi settings to their default state.
  • Congratulations - upon reboot you should begin receiving Visual Voicemails and any related badges on your Phone icon.
