There is no right or wrong, I guess. I mean, they had to start somewhere!
I'm sure they'll get to the point where you won't even realize you're wearing AR glasses. It'll take a dozen years, maybe more, but they'll get there
I think that much of the discontent over the Vision Pro is fueled by the same complaints and concerns that generated the frustration and concern about the iPod when it was first released.
Apple's overall product development seems stagnant (perhaps with the exception of Apple Silicon itself). People see this new product line that they have difficulty envisioning in their own lives and they arrive at the conclusion that if only Apple hadn't wasted all that energy on this product they don't currently care about, then Apple would have been able to improve the products they do care about. Why else would a product generate such animosity? You have to feel harmed by its existence somehow.
It's not that people hate the AVP (or really the iPod at that time) but rather they are frustrated because they believe that the opportunity cost of that product is something they would have rather seen.
Maybe there's truth to that. Maybe if Apple hadn't been "wasting time" on the Vision Pro then we'd instead be enjoying better MacBook Pros right now. Or maybe those engineers could have figured out a path forward for the Mac Pro. In the iPod days I remember many people hoping for a mythical "xmac" mid-range desktop somewhere in between the Mac Pro and the iMac. The iPod was held up as a reason we never got that "xmac" product.
With the benefit of hindsight we see how wrong this perception was in regard to the iPod. Is it similarly misguided when looking at the Vision Pro? I suppose we'll know in 20 years.
I know I loved my iPods, I use my Vision Pro multiple times a week, and I am enthused about the future products we'll see which will be build using the skills and knowledge that Apple have developed in order to produce those products today.
I'm confident that components of the technology in the Vision Pro will be featured front and center in future Apple products, irrespective of the Vision headset product line's ultimate success or failure. If history is any guide, we'll be saying in the future "Apple never would have been able to make the {widget} if they hadn't built the Vision Pro.
I also believe that someday in the future AR glasses will be a mainstream product when the technology has improved. The Apple Vision Pro is a vital and un-skippable step in the process of bringing this tech to the market.
