I don't understand. Why isn't the AppleTV implementation of AirPlay and Homekit sufficient, rather than through a TV OS? Apple TV is far superior, and more secure. I suppose there may be a limited number of scenarios for specific Homekit control of the TV, but it seems minimal. "Smart" TVs are the dumbest piece of technology out there - there's little use case for consumers. The manufacturers just keep pumping them out to try and infiltrate consumer homes with their versions of spyware and malware through the TV.

When saw this it thought, fake news, I’ve had this for 8 months. All my devices are Apple and I have a Vizio M series and I stream to it from my iPhone and iPad all the time.

Oops it’s Chromecast. I didn’t know. Turns out that the M series has Chromecast built in. All my apps (on my iPad and iPhone) cast to the tv. I never really paid attention. I just assumed iPad, + casting must be airplay or whatever. Not to be cliche but it just works. I’m looking forward to this I guess but what should I expect over the Chromecast experience?

No thanks. I trust this company as much as I do Facebook after they were caught collecting data on everything their customers were watching (cable, DVDs, streaming, etc.) and selling it to 3rd parties without the consent of their customers.

Yeah..... sorry to spoil it for you, but all smart tv makers did this until they were caught. Some still do.
Heck even Apple is listening.

Apple TV doesn't support HomeKit integration, such as turning on and off the TV with scenes. Apple is behind, Google has been able to do this via Chromecast.

Besides, the Apple TV implementation is modern Apple quality... crap. Just tried it, and Siri spun for 15 seconds and says "I'm having trouble with the connection". Rebooted the Apple TV with no change.
I have not problem with my Apple TV at all could be your internet connection. Also Apple TV is the gateway\Bridge for Apple's Homekit. And you say behind I say more intrusive. Personally Sony updated my TV last night with and Android update and UI change and the thing is now laggy as heck.

True, but look at top end model prices today and top end model prices 5 and 10 years ago. They’re going down. I think TV manufacturers are trying to find the sweet spot for people to buy more often and still make increased profits.

Yeah, they still have insanity-price models for the “money is no object” people of the world but they’d be mad to reduce the prices on those as they’re easy money for zero effort.
I still think the tv industry is asking for much if they expect people to upgrade from 1080p to 4k to what next? The tech is just way different than what cell phones where and are now. Thats why phones are starting to coast on their technology level. Phones from 2016 and up haven't changed much over two years to feel a difference. Same thing with tv's. You could buy a 1080p tv in 2007 and keep it 10 years and its still awesome. Phones from 08 to now forget about it being usable.
Once technology progresses to the point that there isn't much change in them year after year people forget about upgrading because they don't need to anymore. I can see people keeping phones for 5-7 years now depending how long the battery lasts.
I bought a xbr4 52" in 2007 for 4000$ which was insane but it was a really good tv. Also bought a plasma in 2011 and have had 4k tv's that still cant compare to that picture. Just recently got another 4k tv to replace the xbr4 Sony. Tv's higher end models still cost 3-4000 for a 65". Still in line with what prices where 10 years ago but sizes are bigger now so you have that. You get more tv for the same price.
The only thing tv manufacturers can do to get people to upgrade every 2-3 years is offer something different and the way TV's have being going that's just not possible. The tech is already there and they will last people 10+ years still if they want them to.
Id upgrade only if I can get a micro led 75-85" for cheap. Might happen in the next 5 years.

I'm with you @MrGimper I bought a 2017 LG model in early 2018 when the price had nearly halved from its original selling point just 9 months earlier. But even at half the price, it was still the most expensive television I've ever bought. @x-evil-x is correct - my last TV was a Panasonic Plasma nearly 10 years ago. I wasn't planning to upgrade again any time soon.

If Vizio (who I've never even heard of) can update their budget TV's right back to 2016 and a premium brand like LG can't then I'm disgusted. Vizio's tech in their 2016 TV's can't possibly be any more capable than those released by brands like LG at that time let alone a year or 2 later.

I'm very grumpy about this. My LG is a fantastic set but I will be seriously thinking twice about buying from them again in the future.
I still love my Panny 50" gt30 from 2011. Ive had 4k tvs and still look at my plasma and just think its insane how amazing the picture is on it with just 1080p. Its just hard to beat. Ill upgrade this tv to an oled once it dies or hopefully have MicroLED by then.

Vizio's support of older TVs has earned my respect and business for the foreseeable future. The fact that they keep the 2016 P series in line with current models (even sent me a current remote free of charge) is unheard of when compared to other tech companies.

I hear a lot of people complaining about LG displays not getting this new tech, but I have been conditioned to just expect this sort of thing (HomeKit promises from so may companies broken).

One thing I'm surprised no one is talking about here is the timeline for this Vizio update rollout. My ecosystem is 100% apple where ever it can be. They make promises, and they deliver, and they do so in a very timely fashion. I have the latest M series Vizio and checking for updates showed nothing. How is the "next couple months" a reasonable timeline for getting this? I mean they have had a pretty prolonged beta (that I could not sign up for because it was closed by the time I bought my TV).

Same here. I recently picked up their PX65 in anticipation of using HomeKit via the beta and was surprised that they already closed it. Contacted Vizio support and they directed me to ask Apple. I emailed Apple beta support and no response. I'd think they'd release it for their newer sets first since those were built with Airplay 2/HomeKit support in mind. Hopefully the update appears sooner than later. Not a good first impression of Vizio products for me.

You're the one that is behind. Everything here is already possible, and more is possible with iOS 13/tvOS 13.

Literally none of these changes coming to the TV's themselves are useful or relevant to an Apple TV owner. None.

So my Vizio M series got this update last night. It’s amazing. It like having an Apple TV without the hardware.

Yeah exactly, Don't need the hardware anymore for podcasts, or home sharing, or if you like the screensavers, or putting Apps in folders, ETC, yeah just like the hardware

still (not so) patiently waiting for M507-G1. they haven't updated the models page in about 2 weeks. maybe today?

How do we know if we have the update? I just updated my brand new V-series TV, but I don't see it on my iPhone or Mac as an AirPlay device. Nothing in the TV's menus about it.

ok, weirdly, M507-G1 just got the firmware update and airplay/homekit work great.

... but it's not listed on the support article as having been updated? whatevs, i'll take it.

Where can you find the full list of models being updated?

Did it also get the Apple TV app?

Obviously not, yet. But, Apple did include Vizio in the support list when they announced Apple TV+ on May, I guess it will just take time.

You say "obviously not", but I think you're confused by what I'm asking about. I believe that Apple is rolling out an Apple TV app to a bunch of TVs and other set-top boxes (e.g., Amazon Fire TV), which is not only for watching Apple TV+ shows (and, as you alluded, that streaming service hasn't been launched yet), but *also* allows you to watch iTunes movies you own. I believe there was a recent news article on this website that mentioned that the Roku boxes recently got this.

What's confusing, is that I don't think they've made it clear if all 3rd party devices that are getting *one* of these features/apps, are necessarily getting *all* of these features/apps.

Adding to the confusion is the fact that the term "Apple TV" now describes a physical box that Apple sells, an app, and (with the "+" added) a streaming service.
