The latest update to VLC ruined the app and sent it from 5 stars to none. Prior to this update it played all my mkv's and other video files just fine. Now it says AC3 audio not supported. What kind of idiots do they have coding these things?

It isn't supported due to a licensing requirement from Dolby. No need to get all mad at VLC. Next time, do a little research before calling VLC coders idiots.

They're still idiots for giving in to that crap. They should stand up and defy ridiculous licensing crap and laws.

What they did by giving in to some dumb licensing requirement was to greatly reduce the usefulness of my devices and there was no warning saying that the update would cause harm.

Could you not delete the new version from your iPhone/iPad then go back in Time Machine to get the previous version?

Well then it wouldn't be in the App Store, would it?

AVPlayerHD supports AC3, it costs £2.29. If you're not willing to pay such a small price then I guess AC3 support is not that important to you.

There is no time machine on iOS devices. On my Mac I don't use iTunes so there would be no backups there. I greatly dislike iTunes and don't use it on my Mac or windows machines. It made such a mess of my music that I gave up on it years ago.

It was in the App Store for years previously and was doing the audio just fine. But I already did just what you said and got avplayer since I had no other choice. Still very annoying. Really they could have gone on supporting audio and the world would not have come to an end. Like those damn companies aren't rich enough.

----------

Ah I see.

I just assumed you were using iTunes.

I use other apps for managing music and mainly Amazon cloud for keeping all my stuff available on my apple, windows and android devices.

Over the past year(?) or so every single video player got hit with this. They either got pulled from the store completely, AC3 support was stripped out or they started to charge because of the license cost to the developer.

Now you have bought AVPlayer (which is actually quite good) everything will return to normal for you.

I still call BS on that (not you, but the license crap that these companies impose). They make plenty and don't need to be milking the public and other companies for their ridiculous fees.

There doesn't appear to be plans to re-add it in an update. I emailed them and got this response....

We had to remove it due to a legal threat from Dolby Laboratories asking us $8,000,000 per year for it.

Best regards,

Feli

Dolby would send a letter to Apple and they would remove app from App Store. Fighting this in courts would take them years and they would most likely loose as Dolby (as far as only law is concerned) has right to charge money for use of their technology. So in the end, you still would have to pay for some app that has bought a license to use AC3.

That can't be right. I can hardly imagine that the people behind AVPlayerHD and Infuse would afford those licensing fees.

This is why in several(!) of my (mostly Sep 2012+, when all this codec removal started) articles here in the iPad Apps forum I've emphasized the importance of backing up multimedia players' IPA's. That would be the only way of restoring an old version.

Unfortunately, just looking for an old .ipa around the net won't cut it as it'll be signed for a different user.

Strange they demand THAT much money... I've been talking to a lot of multimedia devs when Dolby started this all, and they stated Dolby demanded far less money, around 10,000 USD + the royalties after each app (around $1).

Whether or not you think a company is "rich enough" is irrelevant. Companies have the right to make as much money as they want.

It's called the profit motive, and it's why we even have these devices that the VLC app runs on in the first place.

Download an earlier .ipa from VLC.

Problem solved.

Ipa is android. Not possible on iOS devices.

We could still have these apps and devices. It's just that the profit motive is the wrong way to go about it.

iOS apps are .ipa

There is no need to even mention getting nasty in an exchange. I wasn't planning on being ugly to you.

Again, do a little research before being so quick to reply and tell me I am wrong.

And you should do the same. You will henceforth be ignored.

We'll just have to agree to disagree. I don't personally believe that we wouldn't have a fraction of the things we have today if it weren't for the profit motive.

No point arguing this. The capitalism vs socialism argument has been going on for centuries and will not be resolved here. You believe what you want and I will do the same. And it was never the point of this thread, which, by the way, I started.
