What's all this whining about someone "advertising" an alternative to VLC? I don't care if I have to use VLC some some other app, I just want to play divx/xvid avi movies on an iPad or iPhone. It's one of the main things holding me back from getting an iPhone.

Exactly. I'm not saying that "thatotherplayerthatIcan'tmentionwithoutgettingflamed" is the best thing ever made. I'm saying, in the files I tested, my xvids played smoother with less pixelizing than VLC. I wanted VLC to be better. So, yes I mentioned it because I am using it and it plays smoother. I didn't delete VLC because I want to see what updates will do... Another 6-8 months and the iPad will be exactly what I want it to be...

What.......ever.

Don't worry about some others on this forum. I found your comments to be both relevant and useful. The apps you suggested are more mature and do offer performance advantages over the current iteration of VLC.
While I see a bright future for VLC on iOS. The current version just doesn't cut it for me.

All the secrets... revealed!

That's pretty cool setup, but I would like to see it work on a plane or even a Hotel's wifi network. Usually when I'm home I like to watch stuff on my TV. I have Boxee for that.

On a plane? Yes, it will work with no connectivity... if you use magic!

From a hotel wifi, or Starbucks or Panera or campus wireless is doable:

Use port forwarding to punch a hole in your router (enter the internal IP of your router in a browser to access the settings... make sure if it doesn't already have a password, that you give it one), and use a service like dyndns so you don't have to remember your IP. I'd also recommend using ssl (a self-signed security certificate is fine) on the server, utilizing encryption just in case you get sniffed (helps avoid getting accused of "making available," illegal file sharing). Also, just don't share your media (online to others), and use a robots.txt in your apache root folder to prevent Google from crawling it and results showing up on Google searches.

Google anything here you don't already know. Good luck, happy nonsyncing!
