Definitely an acquired taste for me. I started with Zubrowka that I bought in Poland at a time when the US thought that the Polish buffalo grass herb in the bottle was a hallucinogenic. In Poland it was considered an aphrodesiac. I found it just made me sleepy. Then I hit on gin martinis, preferably Bombay Saphire or, in winter, Tanquery Ten. I've recently discovered Hendrick's gin. Yum.

<random thread> And no I've never drank rubbing alcohol, but it has the same smell and the link between smell and taste are pretty similar.

Confirm/Deny?

My least favorite spirit but I still drink it. </random thread>

How about the fact that both Vodka and rubbing alcohol both contain large amounts of ethanol?

Sorry to actually answer the original question posted in the thread, but I'm not a drinker anyway. :D

My view: vodka tastes awful, but less awful than anything else. And it's an easier flavour to mask, which is why I prefer it (in addition to it providing a 'cleaner' and less sedating inebriation than other forms of alcohol, for me).

In my experience, I have to say that rubbing alcohol tastes better  But anyways... who drinks alcohol for the taste of it? ;)
With red wine definitely. Nothing beats a decent Merlot.

Although Baileys, Amaretto, and even a Mojito all give it a run for its money :)

How did I miss this thread?!?!?

Vodka Shots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How I love thee! (Straight or vodka based)

Do not insult my pride and joy... Grey Goose. Mmmmm loves me some Grey Goose. Loves my vodka.

Don't settle for the cheap crap, like the stuff they serve at bars.

mmm...Grey Goose is just about the only vodka i can stand at this point in my life. for me, it's not so much the taste difference between GG and the cheaper vodkas; it's the smoothness of the GG that makes it a winner.

i had a terrible run in with a bottle of Skyy vodka my first year of college. all i remember is drinking an entire bottle (straight from the bottle, just my roomie and i) then being dragged to the boys' bathroom and placed in front of a toilet for half an hour. i woke up in my bed the next morning with no pants, my hair pulled back in a ponytail, and a terrible hangover.

needless to say, i swore off vodka for a few years. ;)

Don't you like the taste of a cold beer after a hard day of work?

Well that I do :) But lately I've been thinking that the taste of my beer is directly proportional to the hardness of my work day... Na I'm just kidding, I do like the taste of some drinks (specially beer), but most of the stuff you get at clubs and such are more focused on the effect of the drink rather than the taste of it.

I was not that impressed with Zubrowka. I mostly drink Chopin or Tanqueray Sterling (vodka not gin). Belvedere and Hanger One are also good.

I will give a HUGE thumbs up for the Hendrick's gin. I drink it on the rocks with a lemon twist. Nice...

I used to love vodka, but I can't drink it anymore. Once at a friends place, I drank a gallon of cheap 110 proof vodka and got alcohol poisoning. That was definitely not a fun experience. For two days there were evil faeries inside my bedroom walls scratching and whispering the most awful things at me. Now I get dry heaves at the smell of vodka. I now mainly stick to Irish beers and whiskeys, with the occasional swig of homemade moonshine when I visit my dad. I learned that moderation is the key.

also those yards of protruding nose must be fairly hard to navigate around with in crowded places...

Rubbing alcohol is isopropanol

Not to argue, but:

wikipedia said:
Rubbing alcohol, U.S.P. / B.P. is a liquid prepared for topical application prepared from specially denatured alcohol and containing 68.5-71.5% vol./vol. of absolute (ie. 100%) alcohol. However, individual manufacturers can use their own "formulation standards" in which the ethanol content usually ranges from 70-95% v/v.
The British Pharmacopoeia and United States Pharmacopoeia define the term alcohol as a mixture of ethanol (Ethyl Alcohol, C2H5OH=46.07) and water of fixed proportions. Alcohol, B.P. is 96% ethanol v/v, and Alcohol, U.S.P. is 95% ethanol v/v. Therefore, the term rubbing alcohol generally refers to a mixture using ethanol (ethyl alcohol).

Isopropyl rubbing alcohol would contain isopropanol, but not all rubbing alcohol's do contain it.

you don't want to drink it.

I'd agree with you there :D , although this was interesting

Rubbing alcohol is sometimes consumed by those who cannot afford or cannot legally buy beverage alcohol (ethanol). The minimum age of 21 to purchase alcohol in the United States does not apply to rubbing alcohol. Rubbing alcohol products that contain methyl alcohol (methanol) can cause blindness or death when consumed.
Rubbing alcohol burns with a bright blue flame, which is almost invisible in the light, but visible in the dark. The higher the alcohol percentage, the richer the color, typically.

answer~plain skyy vodka tastes like rubbing alcohol but with mio or water enhancer it's good but don't drink too much because it's hella sweet

Goose should not taste like Rubbing Alcohol; if it does, then you really need to be side eyeing your buddy for drinking your stash and replacing it with a cleaning agent

If you find regular vodka to be too harsh tasting, give some of the flavored ones a shot.
Now, the quality of the vodka will be lesser than your plain top shelf stuff, but Pinnacle actually produces some darn good flavors.

I will say, no matter how much your repressed inner toddler comes out, avoid 3 Olives' "Loopy" vodka.
It's supposed to taste like Fruit Loops cereal, but I assure (and warn) you... it tastes like licking those wet naps they give you after you have wings or crab legs, lol

Easing into Vodka with flavors, I'll recommend a few of my fave flavor combos
Pinnacle Whipped mixed with Sunkist Orange Soda
Whipped and Cream Soda *or* with Rootbeer

At least it's an appropriate thread to wake from a decade-long blackout.
Nicely timed, too (Annual Hangover Day).

After a spinning room and a two day hangover drinking Harvey Wallbangers, I swore off Vodka. That was when I was 19. I learned an easy lesson about vodka and over indulging in alcohol.
