mine had that, but i was able to wipe it off.. no scratches or anything. I think its from the foam in the packaging cause everything else is covered in plastic except for the corners
For those that had this black stuff on it, did you order the 17".. ?

I got the 15", it also has tiny black foam particles all over..

If it's on the outside it can easily be on the inside through the cracks, ports, keyboard and vent. This has been reported enough times that it's not an isolated incident.

Yay China and their superior QC standards!

Hi

Right has anybody sat down to think about this? the unibody is made from? aluminium So what do you get when you CNC milling and polish aluminium Black dust!

Think of that nice silver jewelry yo may have give that a posh with some silver polish an it will turn your cloth black!

Thats what you get when you rub and build up friction on aluminum i expect!

Also maybe the macbook pros are aluminum oxide coated and this can resemble dust!

Mine had the same thing. Did you guys order BTO? I wonder if the guy who opened up our machines to put in the 7200rpm HDD had dirty hands or something. Beautiful box and packaging, but it definitely didn't feel right unboxing it like the last Macbook I got from an Apple Store... almost like someone had played with it before. Sounds weird but it's hard to explain.

My 13" came with some sticky goo on the bottom, and on the wrist pad. Also, it has a slight rough spot in one of the corners, from the machining.

The 'T' key is also slighty crooked.

I think Apple's quality testing has really gone down a notch on these new MBP's. I would return it, but I have to mail it back to The Netherlands, and I can't afford to be without a real computer for a week.

Also, I can feel slight vibrations from the fan all the time, I never had that on my old MBP.

Mine just arrived and it also has a little bit of dust on the front corners but it went off right away with 2-3 thumb wipes.

I've owed 4 macbook pro's in the course of 2 years, and 3 out of those had similar issue, they were dirty, and those 3 where customized (CTO).

Hey OP, that's not volcanic dust! That's water damage. Depending on the company, they wash out their trucks, once a week. They do this to keep the dirt/dust/road grime from transferring to the customer’s packages. Sometimes the contractors that wash the trucks leave the back of the truck's sliding door open to dry, before the morning shift starts loading their packages by destination. If it rains the night before, the trucks usually get the occasional puddle because of dents made by the daily abuse of heavy packages over the years. The shipping companies are notorious for this especially UPS and USPS. I used to work for USPS and it happened all the time. I bet you your package (Brown Shipping Box) has water damage only on one side………If so, water seeped in and the black stuff you see is the moisture from the black foam that holds your MBP down in its plastic bowl/case. I would return it, so Apple can get their money back from the shipping company and help from others getting the same customer service.

Doesn't look like water damage at all
